  1. They're pussycats really, Foxy :)
  2. Stag beetles spotted earlier today on Green Dale fields, so they're out and about for the breeding season. They look fierce but are harmless. They're also pretty crap at flying and walking, so if you see one stranded on a pavement or the road, please pick it up and pop it somewhere safe. They're quite comon round here but nationally they're rare. The larvae feed on dead wood (usually below ground), so if you can leave a small woodpile in the corner of the garden to rot down, the stags will be most grateful :)
  3. Good news. According to Southwark News, Rye Lane will reopen by June 8th. The works have finished months ahead of schedule. "Rye Lane should be open to traffic by Saturday, June 8, after gas engineering work was completed months ahead of schedule. Gas company SGN said the mains work that led the Peckham road?s closure since the beginning of January had been completed and its team were now reinstating the road. Pipes in better condition than expected and new techniques all helped speed up the replacement work originally planned until January 2020. Currently Rye Lane is closed to cars, buses and cyclists between Hanover Park and Sternhall Lane with a diversion via Hanover Park and Consort Road, and temporary traffic lights in place near Copeland Road. SGN general manager, Drew Reynolds, said: ?We?re pleased to announce that we?ve completed the final engineering work ahead of schedule and we?ll be able to safely reopen Rye Lane to motorists and public transport after a period of reinstatement. ?We?d like to thank residents, traders, shoppers and road users for their continued patience and understanding while we?ve carried out this essential work to ensure the Peckham community can enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for many years to come."" https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/rye-lane-due-to-reopen-to-traffic-on-june-8/?fbclid=IwAR0sbjYuxiobIh6kdS4mEX0OMc-Bg1pa0HnDTeCXXVBEyjmVr87bT7lenk8 Let's hope TfL get the message and reinstate the buses currently on diversion.
  4. Changing at Elephant is probably the quickest option. 176, 40 or 12 to Elephant, then 35 or 133 to London Bridge and the City.
  5. se22cat Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Disgusting how many UKIP voters there were, I > expect better of ED. Er, these were the results for all of Southwark not just ED. And UKIP got 1.4% of the vote, which was not quite double the votes for the Animal Welfare Party. So pretty crap really.
  6. Robert Carder (formerly John Bennett) is a good shoe shop on Lordship Lane. Not sure two shoe shops would thrive.

  8. ... and our London region elected three Lib Dems, two Labour, two Brexit and one Green.
  9. Widescale studies suggest that more tree cover means less urban crime: https://www.citylab.com/equity/2012/05/can-trees-actually-deter-crime/2107/

  12. Mentioned a while ago about the little owls in Peckham Rye Park, but I just heard one calling in a tree at the top end of St Francis Park next to DHFC.
  13. That's possibly one of the little owls that live at the top end of Peckham Rye Park. You can sometimes hear their strange 'woop, woop' call at dusk at this time of year.
  14. Nice! I think I heard one at about 6.00 this evening ? Barry Rd near Peckham Rye, so it sounds like they're back. If only for two months or so. It's funny that we think of them as 'our' birds that spend the winter in Africa, when in reality it makes more sense to see them as African birds that just breed here.
  15. Probably the chillier and wetter weather has kept them further south for now. The weekend's looking warmer, so that's a good time, as they need lots of flying insects once they finish their journey to build themselves up for the breeding season.
  16. Keep an eye and an ear out for the return of the swifts ? now's usually about the time. Here's what I've recorded as the first day they've been seen or heard in ED in previous years: 2011 ? May 9 2012 ? May 1 2013 ? May 17 2014 ? May 8 2015 ? May 9 2016 ? May 4 2017 - May 6 2018 ? May 7
  17. TfL has completed its consultation and there was overwhelming support for their proposals. Just had this reply: --- Dear Sir or Madam Between 13 September and 25 October 2018, we consulted on proposals to introduce formal pedestrian signalised crossing arrangements at the junction of Dulwich Common and Lordship Lane. We have now published our Consultation Report, which summarises how we sought comments and feedback on our proposals. We have also published our responses to the most common issues raised during the consultation. In total, we received 274 responses to the consultation of which: ? 91 per cent supported or strongly supported the overall proposal to make changes to the pedestrian crossings and cycling facilities; and ? 3 per cent opposed or strongly opposed our proposal We tentatively anticipate commencing the project early in 2020. We are currently revisiting the design of the scheme to investigate the possibility of introducing a crossing at the southern arm of the junction. We will inform local residents and stakeholders of any design changes before any construction takes place. You can find our consultation report and responses to issues raised here: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/a205-dulwich-common-lordship-lane/. Yours faithfully Paula Perry Local Communities & Partnerships Transport for London---
  18. Possibly the bizarrest thread for many months... "sinister!" /forum/read.php?5,2025549,page=1
  19. Went on a dawn chorus walk around Green Dale fields yesterday morning and heard and/or saw 27 different bird species: robin, blackbird, wren, dunnock, house sparrow, chiffchaff, blackcap, goldfinch, greenfinch, bullfinch, blue tit, great tit, long-tailed tit, song thrush, magpie, carrion crow, jackdaw, black-headed gull, lesser black-backed gull, herring gull, cormorant, mallard, ring-necked parakeet, greater spotted woodpecker, starling, woodpigeon and goldcrest. Worth getting up before 4am :)
  20. Without wishing to be libellous.... yes. Although to be fair they'll bring a big away contingent.
  21. Thanks to Truro losing last night, Dulwich Hamlet can't be relegated, which is terrific news after a challenging season. Easter Monday afternoon's game against Woking is the last home game of the season and now won't be the nailbiter that was feared. The ground will, though, be segregated and it's ALL TICKET, so don't turn up expecting to be able to pay on the door. Tickets are ONLY available from the club bar, which is open every evening from 6pm. https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/news/woking-game-arrangements-all-ticket-monday-22nd-ap-2416306.html
  22. Crunch game this afternoon against moneybags high-fliers Billericay Town. Hamlet could really do with a win to ease the relegation worries, so come along and give them a cheer. Kick-off 3pm at Champion Hill, but get there early if you don't have a ticket as the queues at the cash turnstiles can be long close to kick-off.
  23. I had a letter through the door a couple of days ago saying that Thames Water are doing a full survey of the sewerage system on Barry Road between the junction with Upland Road and Peckham Rye. I suspect it's that. Either that or it's the world's most complex game of hopscotch...
