  1. John was a local legend and was rightly the cover 'star' of the first issue of the "Dulwich Diverter" newspaper two and a half years ago. At the paper's launch party (I write the crossword for it), he and I had a big chat, mainly about late 60s West Coast music as he was wearing a Moby Grape t-shirt in the photo on the front of the paper. Lovely man and he'll be much missed.
  2. Good news ? and confirmed on Twitter by Penge's Southey Brewing, who also run the Brighton Beer Dispensary: https://southeybrewing.co.uk/
  3. If Forest Hill's OK, what about SE15? I'll give another shout for Ganapati, please :)
  4. ... take them down to a 'home' game at Tooting. It's good fun :-)
  5. Almost certainly not this season. Even if Meadow were to cave in suddenly and let the club play there on acceptable terms, the pitch is in a right state and would take months to get up to standard. Think next season at the earliest ? which is a shame, but the club will survive and it will return.
  6. It's the wood above Sainsburys car park and next to the adventure playground. There's a small path that leads from it through to Green Dale fields.
  7. There are lots of bats along the railway line between East Dulwich and North Dulwich. They prefer 'tree highways' rather than open spaces to feed along. We did a bat walk in Green Dale fields and Dog Kennel Hill Wood a couple of years ago and the detector picked up common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and noctule bats.
  8. ... especially for a transaction of more than ?100, as was the OP's. Makes you wonder how tight their margins are if they ask for a surcharge on that amount.
  9. "Police have confirmed a double stabbing and another male suffering from a head injury, after an incident in Nunhead this afternoon, Sunday August 12. Police were called at 4:30pm to reports of an altercation in Belfort Road, Nunhead, close to the junction with St Mary?s Road. Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended." https://www.southwarknews.co.uk/news/double-stabbing-and-man-with-head-injuries-after-incident-in-nunhead-this-afternoon/
  10. You can do it in moderation, but it's frowned upon, especially as we're currently 'guests' of Tooting & Mitcham and they rely on bar takings to help with the upkeep.
  11. Indeed. "They got things done" are the four most important words there. If they can't do that, I don't care about their political affiliation.
  12. The Ofo bike chained up on our road for weeks has now been reported to the council as having been dumped.

Most countries know that some form of protectionism is crucial for economic development, despite what neo-liberal economics says. Fair trade does not necessarily equal free trade. The British Empire only sang the praises of free trade once it began to dominate markets, in part thanks to protectionist measures at home. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2008/sep/09/eu.globaleconomy
  14. Hmmm, the heatwave makes it sound more like cracking in the subsoil and below due to the moisture content decreasing ? which is the cause of most London subsidence. And birch roots are very shallow. Further investigation need, I think.
  15. There's one of those bikes chained up outside our house. The Ofo bike people say they're not supposed to be left chained up and they'll come and retrieve it. It's been there for about five weeks, so I've given them one last warning to pick it up or I'll report them to the council for dumping it.

The concourse M&S at London Bridge had no chillers working this morning. Lots of disgruntled-looking hungry commuters...
  17. The landowner pays. These flytippers know that if they don't dump on public land, they don't really have to worry about the law.
  18. The only councillors who've ever responded to me in 24 years are James Barber (when he wasn't a councillor in my ward) and two Tory councillors in Village Ward (the late Toby Eckersley and Michael Mitchell), all three of whom were extremely good at sorting out the issues involved. As someone who's not either a LibDem or a Tory, I find that depressing and an indictment of local government, particularly in Labour-dominated London.
  19. More cautiously good news ? Meadow Residential have written off the club's 'debts' to them, though these figures were alway rather nebulous and requests for a proper breakdown were ignored. The good thing is, though, that without that potential liability, the club will be far more attractive to new investors. Details here too about Meadow's ridiculous revised scheme which will go nowhere: https://www.londonnewsonline.co.uk/landlords-write-off-dulwich-hamlets-debt/
  20. Here are a couple of recent photos of the ground. Complete neglect.
  21. Not any time soon, alas. But the (temporary) stay at Tooting & Mitcham's ground appears to be working OK, so the club should be able to sit it out, especially with the proposed new injection of cash. The good thing is that the developers can't do anything with the ground at the moment. It seems that any talks they've had with the council have broken down, so it's probably time to put some pressure on the Minister for Sport to appoint a mediator, as she promised in the Commons earlier this year. If that fails, the council will start the process for Compulsory Purchase. This could take a few years.
