Mentioned a while ago about the little owls in Peckham Rye Park, but I just heard one calling in a tree at the top end of St Francis Park next to DHFC.
-
That's possibly one of the little owls that live at the top end of Peckham Rye Park. You can sometimes hear their strange 'woop, woop' call at dusk at this time of year.
-
Nice! I think I heard one at about 6.00 this evening ? Barry Rd near Peckham Rye, so it sounds like they're back. If only for two months or so. It's funny that we think of them as 'our' birds that spend the winter in Africa, when in reality it makes more sense to see them as African birds that just breed here.
-
Probably the chillier and wetter weather has kept them further south for now. The weekend's looking warmer, so that's a good time, as they need lots of flying insects once they finish their journey to build themselves up for the breeding season.

Keep an eye and an ear out for the return of the swifts ? now's usually about the time. Here's what I've recorded as the first day they've been seen or heard in ED in previous years: 2011 ? May 9 2012 ? May 1 2013 ? May 17 2014 ? May 8 2015 ? May 9 2016 ? May 4 2017 - May 6 2018 ? May 7

TfL has completed its consultation and there was overwhelming support for their proposals. Just had this reply: --- Dear Sir or Madam Between 13 September and 25 October 2018, we consulted on proposals to introduce formal pedestrian signalised crossing arrangements at the junction of Dulwich Common and Lordship Lane. We have now published our Consultation Report, which summarises how we sought comments and feedback on our proposals. We have also published our responses to the most common issues raised during the consultation. In total, we received 274 responses to the consultation of which: ? 91 per cent supported or strongly supported the overall proposal to make changes to the pedestrian crossings and cycling facilities; and ? 3 per cent opposed or strongly opposed our proposal We tentatively anticipate commencing the project early in 2020. We are currently revisiting the design of the scheme to investigate the possibility of introducing a crossing at the southern arm of the junction. We will inform local residents and stakeholders of any design changes before any construction takes place. You can find our consultation report and responses to issues raised here: https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/a205-dulwich-common-lordship-lane/. Yours faithfully Paula Perry Local Communities & Partnerships Transport for London---

Heads up - Interesting threads in the main section
BrandNewGuy replied to Keef's topic in The Lounge
Possibly the bizarrest thread for many months... "sinister!" /forum/read.php?5,2025549,page=1 -
Went on a dawn chorus walk around Green Dale fields yesterday morning and heard and/or saw 27 different bird species: robin, blackbird, wren, dunnock, house sparrow, chiffchaff, blackcap, goldfinch, greenfinch, bullfinch, blue tit, great tit, long-tailed tit, song thrush, magpie, carrion crow, jackdaw, black-headed gull, lesser black-backed gull, herring gull, cormorant, mallard, ring-necked parakeet, greater spotted woodpecker, starling, woodpigeon and goldcrest. Worth getting up before 4am :)

Without wishing to be libellous.... yes. Although to be fair they'll bring a big away contingent.

Thanks to Truro losing last night, Dulwich Hamlet can't be relegated, which is terrific news after a challenging season. Easter Monday afternoon's game against Woking is the last home game of the season and now won't be the nailbiter that was feared. The ground will, though, be segregated and it's ALL TICKET, so don't turn up expecting to be able to pay on the door. Tickets are ONLY available from the club bar, which is open every evening from 6pm. https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/news/woking-game-arrangements-all-ticket-monday-22nd-ap-2416306.html

Crunch game this afternoon against moneybags high-fliers Billericay Town. Hamlet could really do with a win to ease the relegation worries, so come along and give them a cheer. Kick-off 3pm at Champion Hill, but get there early if you don't have a ticket as the queues at the cash turnstiles can be long close to kick-off.

Barry Road paint markings everywhere
BrandNewGuy replied to dougiefreeman's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I had a letter through the door a couple of days ago saying that Thames Water are doing a full survey of the sewerage system on Barry Road between the junction with Upland Road and Peckham Rye. I suspect it's that. Either that or it's the world's most complex game of hopscotch... -
Yes, it started charging a few weeks ago. Here's a recent piece about the pressure on 'free' ATMs to start charging: https://www.lovemoney.com/news/82045/charge-fee-save-cash-machines-atm-cash-point

We won't know until the planning applications are made (one for the current ground's footprint and one for Green Dale). It seems that that will happen later than the developers hoped, as I believe several issues were raised at the first pre-application meeting between Southwark Council, the developers and DHFC which might take some time to address.

Curry Club - Thursday 7 March 2019 - venue TBC
BrandNewGuy replied to Michael Palaeologus's topic in The Lounge
Unfortunately I'm now busy on Thursday. -
There are quite a few mistle thrushes in the area ? particularly Peckham Rye, Alleyns' and JAGS' playing fields, and Green Dale. And lots of song thrushes everywhere ? they seem to have risen in numbers around here at the expense of blackbirds.

I'm a 'probable' -
Um, hardly. According to the directors, they might now end the season level financially rather than making a substantial deficit, as they had feared. Only the increased attendances have turned that around. But the club is a long way away from being wealthy.
-
Yes, there's a cock pheasant who's taken up residence in Dog Kennel Hill Wood behind Sainsburys.
-
On matchdays there's the 'mega-container' shop just inside the turntiles which sells shirts, scarves etc. Or you can order online: https://www.dhfcshop.co.uk/

A reminder that there's a public meeting at Dulwich Hamlet's bar this evening to discuss all matters to do with the future of the club including, but not restricted to, the proposals for redeveloping the ground: "The directors of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club will be holding a public meeting at the club house bar at Champion Hill Stadium at 7.30pm on Monday January 28, 2019. The purpose of the meeting is to update fans and the local community on the status and future of the football club after the events of the past year and invite questions from attendees. The club will be happy to answer questions on any subject including the financial position of the club, the status and impact of the new leases for the stadium and surrounding areas and our position on the proposed new application the development of Champion Hill by Meadow Partners."
