Grove tavern to reopen. Fact or fiction.

luxury flats in rye lane, no more bussey - sign the petition!

And with hilariously crass comments like this one (admittedly it's on that forum of reason, Twitter), no wonder many people feel that the bIow-ins show no respect or perspective about a place that's been there for generations before them and will be there long after they've blown out to somewhere else. FWIW I'm more sympathetic to artists' studios than 'luxury' flats, but with friends like these... -
And "Time Out" has bugger all advertising these days, so it's in their interests to let the readers tell them the trends that the magazine will now slavishly follow. And I learned today that the magazine's press day is Thursday. That's five days before it hits the streets, which is crap. An the online version is completely non-navigable. A pale shadow of its former self.

The Peckham Coal Line urban park

The map and diagrams on page 1 of this thread should help you. -
Another recommendation for David O'Donnell of Norwood Roofing, who fixed our valley gutter, re-rendered the gutter wall and repointed the nearby ridge tiles. Friendly and efficient work done at a good price.

Cuts - Do the government really understand the consequences?
BrandNewGuy replied to Otta's topic in The Lounge
A lot of sense (and a bit of nonsense) from Ken. My dream solution: a halfpenny on basic rate tax, a penny on higher rate (both to fund NHS and social care spending) and re-rate property to reflect genuine house/land prices. Many foreign residents cannot believe how low property tax is in this country. Given that's where large amounts of wealth are tied up, taxing it more would be both just and progressive. -
The garden job looked like (?) Little Bornes. Great job hosing down the muck at DHFC :-)

Just to confirm that Mrs BNG and I will be there. -

Stupidity is everywhere. Well, it used to be a cast-iron rule that serving soldiers do not take overtly political stances or publicly attempt to affect policy, Here's one aimed at Cameron: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34759339 Treason may be harsh, but it's a very serious constitutional matter that serving men and women do not use their position to publicly engage in politics.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Calm down. I raised the issue because in the past the leaves were clearly regularly during the autumn. I merely wanted to know if that was still the case. So take your snarkiness elsewhere please. -
Peckham Peculiar reported: "Pop Community Ltd will be turning the space into a ?mixture of artists? studios and workshops, and co-work spaces, along with meeting space?, which will ?support a thriving community of artists, small creative businesses and local entrepreneurs?. In addition to delivering over 50 affordable studio and workshop spaces along with pop-up retail and multi-use event spaces, the Pop Community team said it will deliver a number of benefits to the community. Over 600 new jobs to be created on site; and all tenants will be independent businesses, drawn primarily from the local area, and will be required to invest at least one hour per week into community give back programmes. New multi-use event spaces which will be available for use free-of-charge to local community groups for at least 25 per cent of the time; and 10 per cent of all scheme profits will be invested into a community fund to support local projects." Sounds reasonable to me ? as long as they're kept to their promises.

A reminder that Southwark Council has a consultation over ward boundary changes which closes on Nov 16th: "We are asking local people and organisations for their help to draw up new council ward boundaries across the London Borough of Southwark. The Commission has also announced that it is minded to recommend that the council should have 63 councillors in the future: the same as the current arrangements. We are now drawing up a new pattern of wards to accommodate 63 councillors. We need your help to tell where the new boundaries should be drawn. Below, you can see the current ward boundaries for Southwark. Every ward in Southwark is currently represented by three councillors. There is no requirement for the borough to have a uniform pattern of three-member wards. The Commission is therefore interested in proposals for wards that could be represented by one, two or three councillors. You can submit comments to us or upload a document by clicking on the 'Have your say' link at the top of the page. You can also draw your own boundaries and annotate the map by clicking on the same button. There is plenty of information to help you make a submission in the 'Useful links' section at the bottom right of the page. This consultation closes on 16 November 2015." https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk//node/5979 Given the growth of population in the north of the borough and the subsequent perceived injustice of relative ward sizes in terms of population, I fear our influence in the south will become even less than it is now. On their 50th birthday, perhaps the time is right for breaking up the boroughs :-)

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If local councils could be properly, independently and publicly audited in a way that residents could understand (and not with just a few simplistic pie charts), then perhaps we could see whether or not a lot of 'back office' is being ring-fenced at the expense of highly visible frontline services or not. As it stands, it seems to me that these sorts of crucial decisions happen behind closed doors, giving rise to understandable suspicions. -

BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think James mentioned last year that the council weren't going to pay for the temporary extra staff for 'leaf fall' season. I would just like a clear statement from the council stating that they won't be sweeping our pavements of leaves or snow, then we can get on and do it ourselves. Putting my grumpy council tax-payer's hat on, I don't want to do it if I've already paid them to do it... -

BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, does Southwark have a clear policy with regard to sweeping autumn leaves from pavements? Main roads only? With today's rain, there are stretches of Melbourne Grove and Glengarry Road where the pavement is flooded because the leaves have blocked drains and are all over the pavements too - making it slippery as well. I know there was a 'policy' with regard to snow the other year that side road pavements weren't going to be cleared, but we didn't know it until the snow and ice was already getting compacted. It would be nice to know, because then we could take matters into our own hands. -

So points 1-4 > of the OP apply I'm sure it's deliberate policy to run these down as Southwark Labour's policy is that any council tenancy which falls vacant and the property is deemed to be worth more than ?300K is to be sold rather than being offered to another tenant. This presumably covers every council 'street property' in ED these days, which is scandalous. Short-termism of the worst sort and it will lead remorselessly to ghettoisation. Our road (usual ED Victorian terrace) has a fair number of council houses on it, which makes for a good mix of residents. In future, this will just be for those who can afford ?1m + houses, while council/social housing is confined to estates.

You should maybe give the train a go again.Since the timetable was adjusted in early summer, it's been very good (fingers crossed). Delays are few and cancellations almost non-existent. -
I think historically a dog was regarded as a working animal and therefore had a value as 'property', whereas a cat (even a mouser) was just a pet or could be had for nothing.

That hasn't stopped tens of billions of dollars being spent on fusion in that time. And we're no nearer commercially realisable fusion power than we were 30 years ago. > Men and ladies in lab coats are still trusted and > admired. Well, unless you're a climate scientist, work for Monsanto, 'big pharma' etc etc. > Without men and ladies in lab coats you would not > be looking at your screen now. Or indeed Chinese miners toiling to get the coal to power the factories to make the screen. Science (actually, in these instances, technology) is lovely 'n' all, but it shouldn't be our religion.

Nah, it was a technotopian dream. Nuclear is safer than most anti-nuclear greens imagine, but nowhere in the world does it happen without substantial public subsidies. It will never be 'too cheap to meter', as was also promised in the days when men in white coats were trusted and admired.

Are the details of the application online?

I doubt it. For planning purposes, undeveloped land might be Open Space (which includes allotments as 'Agriculture'), Open Water Space, Park, Borough Open Land or Metropolitan Open Land, but as far as I know, only allotments are designated as Agriculture.
