former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
sunbob replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree about looking like its trying to catch people out. I've been caught myself, got a fine for driving through the wrong bit going the other way a few years back. We were convinced the signage wasn't clear but didn't get round to complaining about it at the time. -

"fazer" There is also an "order" sign ie blue circular sign saying no pedestrians or cyclists to the entrance of rye lane. ....? A blue circular sign is a positive order. Ie you must be a pedestrian or cyclist (and nothing else) to enter. -
How do you get a contrary toddler to brush his teeth?
sunbob replied to KikiMac's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just remembered another tip. Reminders/association about treats to eat. Eg when the treat is offered 'remember you can only have yummy cake/ice cream/etc like this because you/if you brush your teeth' then at toothbrush time 'remember you can only have/there will not be any treats if you do/dont'. Carry it through consistently, maybe the message will get through. It could be general or you could link it with something specific. It can be nice and positive too, eg when they let you brush a teensy bit for a change 'i am so glad you brushed your teeth, now we will be able have your fav pud after lunch tomorrow'. Probably a long term strategy, but if you are absolutely consistent and link to every nice treat they have it might help. -
I found the pdf with specific list of what you can't take in: http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CFcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.london2012.com%2Fmm%2FDocument%2FDocuments%2FGeneral%2F01%2F25%2F44%2F06%2FProhibitedandrestricteditemslists_Neutral.pdf&ei=IWMVUMnBO8mt0QX84ID4DA&usg=AFQjCNHJiCPZwWvqNanC4c6hSpAR5cBWXw

How do you get a contrary toddler to brush his teeth?
sunbob replied to KikiMac's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We found 2 tips helpful. Firstly, when you are brushing for them approach from behind (maybe them sitting on your lap) rather than poking toothbrush into mouth from the front. Secondly, we said 'can you give daddy/mummy a toothbrush lesson? Help me hold the toothbrush'. That appealed to our daughter for a good while. She felt she was in charge, whilst we were actually guiding the brush throughout. -
A friend and I who have been before were wondering the same. We both have under 1s plus a 3.5 yr old. I think for me it would depend what mood toddler is in on the day. If she seems ready to play, read, help babies etc then it may work, if she then reverted to her more usual boisterous self we would go to the g green playground opposite instead (weather permitting).

Popular group activities for 3-4 year olds?
sunbob replied to notesink's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I have a 3.5 yr old just about to break up for the hols plus an 8 month old. There seem to be quite a few playgroups going through the summer, see the summer let's go guide here http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/200246/activities_and_things_to_do We could just choose one/two of them and all go and meet there :) -
Does anyone know of any little classes for 3-4 year olds? We haven't got a place at a school nursery, where I know they would be making a start on this kind of thing. thanks.

As a pedestrian, I always used to find the junction there safer before the introduction of the traffic lights. It seemed that because it was a narrow crossroads with zebra crossings, a high percentage of vehicles approached it with caution, slowing down just in case. Since the traffic lights were installed lots (maybe most) vehicles zoom through on green or even speed up to catch the green. Just remembered, the lights were actually meant to be temporary whilst the water ring mains works were being carried out. I wonder if they will ever be removed. I do hope so, as the queues South up Peckham Rye only started when they were installed.

Can anyone tell my anything about Rye Oak Primary school?
sunbob replied to Fidgetsmum's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I don't have any direct experience of the school, but have always got a great feeling from Rye Oak. A couple of years ago we came across them having their sports day on the common. They were doing some really interesting sounding stuff (i remember an 'Anagram Race') and there was a nice friendly feeling. We then walked down to the school and found the feeling of the entrance foyer and staff around friendly and welcoming. We were particularly interested because there seemed to be some diversity of staff, both ethnic group and gender. Since then I've used the children's centre quite regularly and we all (mummy, dd 3.5, ds 8 months) really like the feel, staff and facilities. Everything looks really smart too and nice looking playground. A recent group we've been going to finishes around school ending time and the bustle of children, parents and staff at that time seems very happy and industrious. -
It was built a few years ago (4/5?), on the plot of what was a small cottage. (amazing what they've squeezed in, the flats have a lounge/kitchen in one so are pretty dinky, other than the penthouse at the top). Don't know who designed it, just a run of the mill developer I think.

I had both babies with the Oakwood Midwives, another local community team, but each letter from Kings about scans said the same thing as yours so I think its just something they say. would def ring anyway and check though just to make sure. Good luck.

which cereals do you give and at what age?
sunbob replied to hellosailor's topic in The Family Room Discussion
With our daughter we stuck to mini shredded wheat till well over a year old then moved to weetabix which we haven with son now we are not quite so strict and are already mixing in weetabix at 7 months. By the way on bran. I don't know about bran flakes but All Bran (the little sticks) are absolutely packed with sugar. I once used some in a cake recipe and checked the packet. -
East Dulwich Bumps and Babies group
sunbob replied to Librarygirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hello, what age group is this for please? -
I had this for a year or so, pre kids whilst on pill, aged about 32/33. It turned out to be a pollip, a bit of the inside of the cervix sticking out kind of thing as I understand it. I went for an internal scan and the pillip seemed to just be found by chance in the way in/out. They just pulled it off there and then. Strange feeling made me feel a bit shocked and faint, but ok really. The bleeding then gradually subsided over a few months.

Is this what we call a good NANNY ???
sunbob replied to On lookout's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Sometimes 3 year olds need a bit of encouragement to leave the playground/go to the next activity/do as they are told. They may use 'wanting a cuddle/needing a lift up etc' to delay/try to be in charge etc. A non-smiling woman pushing baby out of playground hoping mischievious toddler will follow (after half an hour trying to persuade her its home time) sounds like me on many a day. In fact, thinking about it, I'm sure a professional would have better tactics for dealing with this and get far less stressed/miserable about it! -

Hello. I am hoping to find some fun activities to keep my 3.5 yr old occupied in the holidays (when her pre school and usual playgroups/classes won't be running). Does anyone know of any playschemes, Summer schools (eg languages, sports other) please.
