Why does it affect the whole weak[sic]? One day off, carry on as usual the next day. It's no different to an inset day. And a week's schooling over a five year period seems pretty inconsequential to me. Fuss over nothing. There are far more important issues to do with schools and education in this borough than worrying about this...

Wow. I thought that was a fire alarm going off in my building earlier. Instead it was just the killjoy klaxon I could hear.

To be fair, EP, you'd be wearing a jumper in Yemen and complaining it was a touch nippy.

There would be other sources of heat to bring the room(s) up to a higher temp though. Solar - sun shining in through windows (granted a rarity where you are) Radiation - from human bodies and lighting Electric - tvs, computers, fridge, oven etc etc In an airtight house I'd imagine they'd all add another 4 degrees which would keep you at a balmy 20 degrees? Not to mention the odd time you light the wood burner.

Could you summarise the proposals as you see them? The swimming pool and leisure centre are retained and improved. The athletics stadium is removed. A new primary school is built and possibly new college buildings for Capel Manor. Seperate to this are the proposals from the ZhangRong group for a new "Crystal Palace" to be built. How much use does the track get - obviously any meets are now at the Olympic Stadium so those are gone but do local groups use it much? Kids? Does the leisure centre and pool desperately need improvement? Could the money be found elsewhere?

Spot on Mick. The space is terrible. A few dividing walls erected to creat actual rooms would help no end. It would create a warmer space - literally as well - and mean that on weekdays when it's quiet rooms could be closed off to make the place feel busy and create atmosphere. Then, come Fri/Sat night and Sun lunch when all the diners are out you open all the rooms for dining too. One of my real bug-bears is the modern persistence on pubs being open plan, warehouse style establishments with the atmosphere and micro climate of an aircraft hanger.

I'd re-book somewhere else regardless. It's going down the swanny.

Tiny Little Things That Cause You Irrational Rage
david_carnell replied to PinkyB's topic in The Lounge
It's because the bus never stops in the same place twice. So you just find an empty spot under the shelter and wait for the bus. When it arrives, if you're lucky, it stops near you and you get on quickly. Other times it pulls up short or goes long and you get subsumed by the crowd. Win some, lose some. -
The Missing with local sleb James Nesbit. I was sceptical but actually it's very well done and the final scene of episode one sent proper chills down my spine. Episode 2 tonight.

Bin-gate ahoy. I'm with the tea maker on this one. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1418583 -
It's not just housing. Other cost of living measures hit hard too. Transport Utilities Childcare Only food is relatively cheap.

question re: holiday entitlement at work
david_carnell replied to bonacara's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes, it should be pro-rata based on hours. So a FTE on 38 hours a week gets, say, 30 days per year annual leave or 228 hours. If you work 24 hours a week you'd get 228/38 x 24 = 144 hours. -
Early waker "Lark", activities needed
david_carnell replied to yeknomyeknom's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Exactly. We used blinds in the summer and had dropped them. Once the clocks went back he was waking before 6 again. Once the blinds went up he's now ok till 7. We've tried pushing our luck at weekends by changing the setting to 8 but there are clearly limits to how long he'll obey a stupid clock for! -
I'm utterly depressed. Your argument now is that they shouldn't have a pay rise becasue there are more deserving cases?! Well I'm sure when your boss gives you a bonus or a pay rise you'll be donating it to someone more worthy. Race to the bottom, everytime. Otta's carers analogy, though it has my sympathy, is a straw man. Yes carers should be paid more. Yes councils should be more efficient. Services being outsourced are not always cost effective in the long term. But try advocating for nationalisation of services or returning services to the public sector on here and see the short shrift you're given. These people have done exactly the right thing. Unionised, negotiated, reluctantly taken industrial action, stood firm and won their battle. The answer is for others to do the same. Not whinge that somehow paying one worker the LLW means another is missing out.

None of those posts use the phrase but all attempt to justify reasons, many spurious, about why they shouldn't pay this salary or why the salary is a bad idea. I think you can use the term immoral for an employer that sets its wages at a level below which it is sensibly deemed "liveable" on. Perhaps they could say they pay a London Surviving Wage?

What's Happening on Crawthew Grove Project?
david_carnell replied to i*Rate's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
SJ - I'd suggest that it was inappropriate of the owner to think such a project was suitable in that location. If no one actually bothers to complain, formally or otherwise, then people get away with behaviour and actions that are far beyond impolite but downright anti-social. If your neighbour built an underground pool, and you had this inconvenience, would you be annoyed at him or the council? I'd suggest the blame is equal at least. -
Will you be stocking many interesting stouts/porters? At this time of year as the nights draw in a hoppy IPA doesn't really work for me. I want something dark and malty. The Titanic Brewery's stout is a thing of joy.

Scott is going to be popular with his new neighbours.... -
You think the document is a fake? That they aren't preparing to make redundancies?

I got France v Romania at the Stadio Olympico which I reckon should be a cracker of a game. Sadly didn't get any England games and the Scotland matches were all too far north.
