We then anglacised to Bombay. Still, it was like that from the 16th century so why bother changing it now? Should I still be living in celtic Plowonidonjon rather than latin London? Just seems a bit silly to go around changing all the names back to pre-colonial versions.

I'm always fascintated by the whole city name/pronounciation thing. There's always this reeking pretentiousness to it. People proving how much more travelled they are "you know it's actually pronounced like this" sort of thing. Not you, Nero. Your thing was interesting. But why is a hard "J" and not a soft "zh"? Says who? The Chinese? I expect they really pronounce it Pei-ching. Ho-hum. Since when is it Mumbai? It's bloody Bombay. And Peiking! Utter tosh. Empire. Those were the days. *sighs* ;-)

EDF Drinks - Friday 9th May at The Magdala - Tonight

The new Page2 (I think it is The Village) is fairly cavernous so could easily hold a large gathering. Worth bearing in mind. Still, I'm in for the Magda in a month. -
She might not understand the definition of "ironic" but this is a great cover:

Aristocratization - coming soon to East Dulwich. And you thought gentrification was bad!

It wasn't even close. Paddick and Livingstone wiped the floor with Boris. God help us if that clown becomes Mayor.

Couple of bottles of Chateau Margaux. Good investment. -
Great tune Sean. If I saw that film once when I was a student I saw it....(you get the idea). Great stoner film and the rest of the soundtrack is quite cool as well: Gypsy Kings - Hotel California What I actually wanted to put on was this though (because I saw the Wonder Years for the first time in ages yesterday): Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends

Skoda, owned by Germans. You can't go wrong. The Octavia is a bloody good car and a few quid cheaper than the identical Passat. And better looking.

German German German BMW (3 Series Touring), Audi (A6 Avante) or Mercedes (C Series Wagon). Never French. My parents Renault spends more time at the garage than on the road.

The Daily Mash (a favourite of certain forum members) is based closely on the great American news satire site, The Onion. As previewed in Saturday's Guardian they have begun doing video news broadcasts so straight you wonder if they really are spoofs. Link Some are pant-wettingly funny. Personal favourites so far include: China Celebrates Its Status As World?s Number One Air Polluter 9/11 Conspiracy Theories 'Ridiculous,' Al Qaeda Says Apparently some of the real networks are even trying to recruit the anchors due to their professionalism.

mockney piers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > An olympic boycott by Britain may send out a > strong political message, but it'll make > absolutely no difference to our final medal tally > ;-) Bloody cheek. 2004 Olympics GB - Gold 9 Silver 9 Bronze 12 Esp - Gold 3 Silver 11 Bronze 5 Ever the bridesmaid, eh Piers?! Spain seem to do rather well at the rather disperate likes of canoeing, cycling and gymnastics. On a more serious note, I find myself agreeing with Snorky (oh god) that if you really cared about what was going on in Tibet the first place to look would be to turn your keyboard over and check where it's made. Our insatiable appetite for cheap consumer products is the pertinent issue in boycotting China not ruining athletes careers. PR disasters are all very well but by the time the games come around I have a feeling it'll all seem like the distant past.

I don't live in a "desirable area". Are you still interested in me? Please? My one bedroom ex-local authority sh*t hole is vermin infesteed, the lifts smell of piss and my neighbours are crack dealers but with a lick of magnolia and the smell of fresh coffee I'm sure with your help I could pimp myself on the property ladder in no time. Is this the one with the blond women with big tits? Get back to me.

Anyone got any suggestions of what I can do for dinner with yesterday's roast belly-pork leftovers?

The guy has four kids. I think he's been living as Catholic for some time now!

Does threats of boycotting or actually doing so have any real effect? The tit-for-tat boycotts by the USSR and the USA did nothing to hasten Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan or improve diplomatic relations in the 1980s. The only people who suffer are athletes who have trained all their lives to compete at the pinnacle of their sport and are then denied the chance due to petty bureaucrats. The Olympics will still go ahead whether we are there or not. Sport is political (re: Jesse Owens; Tommy Smith; and Blood in the Water) but penalising ostensibly apolitical athletes does nothing to free Tibet. Dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward. Real action would be applying pressure to British business interests in China.

Next EDF Drinks - this Friday 4th April - CPT
david_carnell replied to georgia's topic in The Lounge
I'm up for another one. The 16th is my birthday so that's either a very good or very bad reason for me to go out drinking with you lot....I'm not sure! Not fussed for venue. Real ale in the Mag is a bit dodgy so I'd go for the EDT if those are the two choices. Have we done the Gowlett? They'll reserve us an area, the beer is great and it's my local. ;-) -

Lovely to finally put some faces to names. Great to meet so many of you with shout-outs to Sean, MP, CitizenEd, AnnaJ, Mark (who I owe a drink next time), Moos (ditto), BellendenBelle, Kel and Bignumber5. Apologies to anyone I missed. Guiness fog is to blame. Had a great time. Castle was much nicer than I thought and it was the busiest I've ever seen the CPT. A great night. Thank you. -

Anyone going? Any tips? ???? & Spadetownboy I seem to remember you doing quite well in the Gold Cup races. I've got a fiver on Mon Mome to win so far but might be tempted on another flutter if someone can convince me.

I like the fact MP and I have even managed to break the forum layout with this little outburst! heh.

Weirdly I was talking to mrs_david_carnell the other night about how I'm a big fan of under-used grammatical notations such the semi-colon but also the dash. Not the hyphen; the dash. God I need a life.

Would you say the same if they were buddhists or is it just certain religions that leave you with a bad taste in your mouth? I would hope they could be objective most of the time. I doubt whether religion has much to say on most issues of government but I'd rather some politicians had a moral code I disagree with than none at all. Not to say atheists aren't moral, you understand. If there are issues that their faith affects I would hope they have enough conviction to follow it, thats all.
