I see the parliamentary campainging has kicked off already: EDM 1328 EDM 1330 Seems you have a friend in Greg Mulholland. If I'd known this is what you were planning I could have pointed you in the right direction. Hope the agency you got is a good'un. It'll be a tough game.
  2. :) Perhaps I should have clarified my initial, rather exciteable, promise. I'll eat my hat if any major party leader comes out as a devout atheist. Back to JesusCappucino's original question though: There is no place for religion in our government. Agreed? I don't think I do, no. I support people's right to practise religion freely and if they are elected by democratic mandate to govern then I would consider them hypocrites if they didn't allow their religion to influence some of their policy decisions. Whether I'd support them is, of course, another matter entirely.
  3. Hmmm...whilst that trilby is looking mighty tasty his "devout-ness" doesn't really spread very far does it: Still, best of the also-rans I suppose.
  4. As an aside it was Alistair Campbell who is attributable for the (in)famous "we don't do God" remark. It was used to defer from answering questions on religion and Blair. It wasn't exactly a secret though was it. I mean, wow, political leader has religious views - what next, revelations that some cabinet members once took drugs? I'm no fan of Blair but I'll eat my hat when a party leader comes out as a devout atheist.
  5. If we're talking Sin City I personally preferred the girl who appears in Gilmore Girls (don't ask). Oh, someone already mentioned her. Alexis Bledel. In the words of Al Pacino "hoo-ah!" http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f206/Ferhatt/alexis_bledel_5.jpg Talking of Al Pacino and "hoo-ah" the girl he dances with in Scent of a Woman!....a quick google reveals she is Gabrielle Anwar. *sigh* http://www.nndb.com/people/904/000098610/gabrielle-anwar-1-sized.jpg I think I'm in love.
  6. What's with all this olive oil nonsense for cooking steaks? Cook it in its own greatness - lard! Mmmm.
  7. In the days of square tv's this measurement was a bit of a problem when you got to really big sizes. With widescreen the difference in width to diagonal is less pronounced so you don't lose too much from the figure quoted. If your asking because you are thinking about buying try the following calculation for deciding how big you need (sometimes there is such a thing as too big): Antenna Multiply the number of feet between you and the screen by 4 inches. DVD/Satellite Multiply the number of feet between you and the screen by 6 inches. HDTV Multiply the number of feet between you and the screen by 7 inches. No idea why it's still in inches.
  8. Holy mother of crap! That is the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. I don't even know if I like it....but my god! Part of me thinks it's the greatest thing ever designed and part of me thinks it would be a living nightmare. Cool idea though. Bagsy the penthouse!
  9. Ok, I'm not over 30 but Wilma?!? It's all about Betty! Just not the Rosie O'Donnell monstrosity from the films. M'lud may I present evidence batch A: http://www.themathlab.com/images/cartoons/bettyrubblelarge.gifhttp://www.weirdspace.dk/HannaBarbera/Graphics/Wilma%20Flintstone.jpg Wilma appears to be modelling the Princess Anne haircut - not a good look girls. Oh and one for the missus (heh)
  10. Not yet....but it will be by then. June as well so I guess sweat is to be expected.
  11. I'm getting tickets to see these guys at the Garage in June: p.s. Never been to the Garage before, anyone know what it's like as a venue?
  12. Actually I didn't notice a thing which is odd considering I work right by you and you felt it underground. Perhaps I am less observant than some.
  13. Salute a Typhoon? That hunk of over-priced, under-performing Euro-junk? Not me. Let me know when the RAF finally buys a plane worth having and I might begin to feel proud. Respect to the uniform - shame the backroom boys can't buy anything worthy of the RAF badge.
  14. Is impersonating good po-lice not a crime?
  15. BTW, the practise of removing street furniture and/or traffic signs is known as Shared Space. It has been trialled to a degree in the UK as you can see from this article. I used to work in a transport planning office (although it specialised in cyclists) so can appreciate the conflicting needs of different users when designing a junction. In this case the signage and road markings appear fairly adequate. There would have been post-implementation research done into its effectiveness and I'm guessing its well respected in the main. Loving the forum's own re-designs though!! :))
  16. Maybe a set of retractable bollards would be the answer.
  17. Is East Dulwich the cleverest forum around? Do those young whipper-snappers in Forest Hill, Sydenham or even (gasp) West Dulwich have the brain cells to challenge us. I've noticed that the SE23.com forum have pub quizzes against a team from Sydenham. Does anyone here write on either of those? Keef (as our resident Sydenham-ite)? Do you think we could join? Would you want to test yourself against these titans of south-east London? If there is some interest either now or at the drinks on Friday (hopefully I'll be popping my cherry and attending) then I'll contact the people on those forums and see whether or not they'd be interested in letting us join their fun. I'm guessing this would involve away matches in Forest Hill/Sydenham pubs and then a return leg here. Not sure which pub would be best. All things to be considered. First things first....hands up if you're interested.
  18. I'm just off ED Rd on Oakhurst Grove. I think some forumites live in the big block of flats on the corner there. IS it called Altima Court?
  19. By the sounds of that blog they were only given access after threatening legal action. Turn-over is very different to profit Keef. Granted, some costs will be lower with the restauraqnt closed but the biggest bills (rent, rates etc) will remain constant.
  20. I think they were closed for a good few weeks. Enough to have cost them ?150k. The G&B blog doesn't offer much illumination but by the sounds of things they came close to going to the wall. Could be hyperbole though.
  21. G&B have apparently launched a legal action against Celestial for ?150,000 for loss of business. The work took three days once access to the drains had been granted. Rumours suggest that Celestial is already heavily in debt due to loans/mortgages to renovate/let the flats above. This action could enforce their closure if they were to lose. I'm not sure what I think.
  22. If science humour or coolness is what you enjoy these are quite good: 1) Warning labels 2) 10 ways to destroy the earth (please do not try at home) 3) Depending on your browser settings, a life-size blue whale 4) In a similar vane - the crazy world of scale
  23. LizzygotDizzy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Does anyone know where the phrase "many happy > returns of the day" originates from? *adopts nasal voice and dons specs* Via a quick google: Since the 18th century this has been used as a salutation to offer the hope that a happy day being marked would recur many more times. It is now primarily used on birthdays; prior to the mid 19th century it was used more generally, at any celebratory or festive event. The first record of it in print is in a letter written by Lady Newdigate in 1789 (published in Newdigate-Newdegate Cheverels in 1898): "Many happy returns of ye day to us my Dr Love."
  24. Nah, for the real "friday feeling" you have to have: The Pointer Sisters - I'm so excited
  25. They'll be open till 2amon Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights though. Post piss-up curries here we come.
