  1. Who said this about whom? ?If he had died in the fifties, he would have been regarded as a god. If he had died in the sixties the world would have viewed him as a very great man indeed. Alas, he died in the seventies, what can one say?? I honestly don't know but would like to if someone more knowledgable can help me out.
  2. As for the vast majority of the time, and on most lines, tube trains travel underground in complete darkness, what is the point in them having windows? The announcer tells you which station you are at so you don't need them for that either.
  3. Moos Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I do like the way they differentiate between > 'Christian Science practitioner' and 'minister of > a recognised religion'. Hehe...it's not a bloody science either let alone a religion.
  4. "President/Secretary of a recognised organisation" Recognised by whom? Does the forum have a President? Mr Administrator....could you sign my photo please. To get back on-thread, this idea of an East Dulwich lexicon is quite a good one but I'm having a mind blank and can't contribute anything. :-S

  6. The Bill? Normally films around Croydon and Merton but that's not far from here.
  7. Praise indeed. If that's the hang-out of choice for Spanish ex-pats the tapas must be half-decent.

But let him have his fun Atila...not everyone can support Woolwich FC Arsenal you know. ;-)
  9. Jah Lush Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > And Leeds might get their 15 points back which > would give them automatic promotion. Aye, bang on Jah. And I would rather appreciate if al the media could stop referring to Swansea as champions and remove the "C" from next to their names. They are nothing of the sort. If we get all 15 points back on Weds we will 1 point behind them with a game to go. Sounds pretty up in the air to me. Oh and please let the Wendies get relegated as well, please!
  10. Yes, yes, well done all of you. Now, move along. Nothing to see here. 'Op it the lot ya! Ruddy layabouts.
  11. 5. Me - although my birthday party is the day before so I may not be in a fit state to play. Perhaps I should be listed as 12 instead.
  12. The short answer about handball is because of the Germans. They love it. They hosted the 1936 Olympics where it made its debut and then again at Munich in 1972 where it was introudced for the second time. After that it kinda stuck around - the continental Europeans seem to like it and since the Olympic Association is a continental European entity it's not too difficult to see how it happened. Oh and how about "ahoy-hoy"?
  13. I'm feeling poetic. Mr Bragg (Billy not Melvyn) provides the answer: There is power in a factory, power in the land Power in the hands of a worker But it all amounts to nothing if together we don't stand There is power in a Union Now the lessons of the past were all learned with workers' blood The mistakes of the bosses we must pay for From the cities and the farmlands to trenches full of mud War has always been the bosses' way, sir The Union forever defending our rights Down with the blackleg, all workers unite With our brothers and out sisters from many far off lands There is power in a Union Now I long for the morning that they realise Brutality and unjust laws can not defeat us But who'll defend the workers who cannot organise When the bosses send their lackies out to cheat us? Money speaks for money, the Devil for his own Who comes to speak for the skin and the bone What a comfort to the widow, a light to the child There is power in a Union The Union forever defending our rights Down with the blackleg, all workers unite With our brothers and out sisters from many far off lands There is power in a Union.

My girlfriend managed a pub that was visited by Bailiffs after a banking error missed one payment of rent. Let's hope this is equally a storm in a teacup. Would be a great shame if it went for good.
  15. I'm going to be leaving for home shortly and won't be able to continue this for much longer (and quite frankly I don't want to) but I'll make one last hash of a retort and then bugger off. James - no one discriminates against the middle classes. We poke fun at them/ourselves on this forum but none of them really and truely gets discriminated against in the way you appear to imagine. If you have actual examples, then of course I'll stand corrected. In the meantime I have corrected my view on your opinions. It's not analogous to compare your prejudice to racism but it does show a insensitivity to society's differences and a somewhat snobbish approach to living in a very diverse area. I don't expect you to "hug-a-hoodie" but the way you use chav with such distain I've found offensive (along with others) - hence my continued tit-for-tat response to your posts. DPF - I apologise. I didn't realise what you quite meant and may have been to quick to judge. A victim of my own accusations, if you like. I still think we (society, this forum, whatever) need to be careful though when making crass judgements based on the clothes people wear/pets they own/cars they drive. Perhaps it is a sign of misplaced anxiety rather than prejudice, but the fact remains. And I do think that leads to discrimination in both overt ways and more subtle ways that affect the fabric of our community. Not something to just "deal with" or get over. I realise some of this sounds like wishy-washy liberal clap-trap but it's nothing if not heartfelt. In general - it seems we're all agreed that dog licenses are a good idea and something I'd certainly support. Do you have to do something to earnt hem though or merely have it taken away if your dog attacks someone in order to stop you getting another? Also, I think banning breeds is a dangerous precedent and not something to be advised.
  16. Dulwich_ Park_ Fairy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Why do you keep bringing race into it? Fine. Should I pick on another discriminated-against section of society instead? Women perhaps? The disabled? Do you see what I'm trying to do/say? Why is it ok for people to actively and openly express their distaste for one group/class/etc of society without fear of retribution and yet if you made the same sorts of comments about any other group (like those above) you'd be lynched on here. I have as much of a problem with owners of dangerous dogs as the next person, have every sympathy with those who have been unfortunate enough to been attacked or know someone that has but I'm not going to let that sympathy turn into a laissez-faire attitude towards discrimination and nasty vitriol.

Goodness if only those young black men would stop wearing such baggy "pants" and baseball caps pulled down over their eyes they wouldn't look so shifty and get pulled over by the police. And those nasty Muslim men would kindly shave off their beards and abandon their religious garb for something from the Boden catalogue everything would be just super.
  19. Snorky, Bob, Mellors - best laugh I've had all day.
  20. I didn't call you racist - I merely pointed out that to discriminate on grounds of appearance is somewhat of an equivalent. Without sounding incredibly twattish, I guess the tracksuit other accoutrements that you define as "chavvy" are a lifestyle choice. Whether you think it's stylish or makes you look like an oik is entirely irrelevent. It has nothing to do with you how anyone else looks. You find young, tracksuited men threatening? Perhaps your own prejudices are colouring your argument - have you ever engaged them in conversation, bothered to say hello or know any personally? Am I stereotyping you? I doubt it James, I don't know you - do you read the Daily Mail? It's an easy trap to fall into isn't it - making broad sweeping statements about groups of people you know nothing about. Chav is only a negative word because people like you deem to make it so.

  22. What do I want? Cheese on toast for lunch! When do I want it? Now! Work to rule Bob, work to rule.
  23. Bob, for someone who freely admits to wandering around in his dressing gown and slippers late into the afternoon criticising teacher perks may be a tad hypocritical. Would any of us notice if the Musicians Union called for a downing of tools? ;-)
  24. It's a song by James Blunt so I wouldn't try and attach any meaning to it. It probably just rhymed. And talking of toast and shit songs a quick shout out for Des Ree with: "I don't want to see a ghost/It's the sight that I fear most/I'd rather have a piece of toast/Watch the evening news". Lovely.
  25. Make sure you check Gumtree for flats. Got mine from there and you can often get a bargain from a private landlord rather than going through an agent. Just make sure you get all the correct paperwork - don't want the same thing happening again do you?! I doubt there is much crack knocking around East Dulwich though. On fairly massive tangent my home-town (a leafy Surrey suburb) was featured in Tuesday's G2 section of the Guardian as the location of a Chinese brothel in a cul-de-sac. Goes to show the seedy underbelly exists all over and not merely inner London. Best of British Strawbs.
