Bugger off! Bloody scum fans....they get everywhere! Fair result tbh. We were dire thru-out. Roll on 2008/9.

The Judiciary? Surely the enforcement of contracts and the law would have to remain in the hands of the state? State spending is not neccessarily as inefficient as you describe. The state is able to negotiate cost due to the relative size of the purchase. To overly simplify this, and to go back to your car metaphor, you buy one car with your money and pay ?x but the state is purchasing 10000 cars and receives substantial cost savings due to bulk purchasing. Economies of scale.

The trouble is that one man's angry knob is another man's bloke on a good night out havin' a laff. I agree with you entirely though CitizenED.

A combination of the booze thread and the music thread have reminded me of this: Caffreys (ft. a sample of Jump Around by House of Pain) You'll have to scroll down to find it. I'm not Irish, nor have ever been to the Emerald Isle but I bloody love a pint of Caffreys, that track and this advert.

The Japanese thing was a bit of light hearted banter but the fact remains that the Japanese government (not renowned for their dim-wittedness) seem to think it entirely acceptable to drink nearly twice what the UK govt does. Now both cannot be right but both certainly can be wrong.

Many Euro countries only give daily limits so you'd have to "do the math" (Or I'll do it for you) UK - 168g/week Austria: 24g/day = 168g/week Czech Republic 24g/day = 168g/week Italy: 40g/day = 280g/week Netherlands: 29.7g/day = 207.9g/week Portugal 37g/day = 259g/week Spain: 30g/day = 210g/week Sweden: 20g/day = 140g/week Switzerland: 24g/day = 168g/week What's Portugal like this time of year/life?

I've got to say I'm with Jah on this one. This 21 units a week malarky is nonsense. They invented the figure. As in "we've got no fookin clue but this seems about right". If you look worldwide no one can even decide what a "unit" is: UK - unit = 8g alcohol Iceland - 9.5g Netherlands - 9.9g Canada - 13.6g Hungary - 17g Japan - 19.75g!!!! And that's Japan people...not a nation renowned for dropping dead in their 50s. Yes, yes, they eat fish 10 x a week but you ever see a Japanese businessman on the lash and you'll see what drunk is. Second, the "recommmended daily/weekly amount" figure is also hotly disputed: USA - 196g/week (male) UK - 168g/week New Zealand - 210g/week Australia - 280g/week Japan - 276.5g/week Now why should I be concerned about units and allowances again? Man needs three things to live a happy life. Bread, bacon and beer. I'm buggered if I'm giving up any of those.

Yeah, nothing like three middle-class white boys from East Dulwich laying down those hip-hop toons!

Will Oldham always does good stuff. Not very er, summer-y though is it. Given our weather that may not matter. More dark winter's eve sort of music.
-
You going down for a touted ticket Sean? Naughty, naughty. Or lucky, lucky. Maybe this could be "Hip-hop Friday" in the music room? Any objections?

I just found out Public Enemy are playing a special gig in Brixton tonight where they're playing It Take's a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back in its entirety. Amazing album. Changed hip-hop forever. Anyone going? In the meantime: Public Enemy - Don't Believe the Hype

In honoour of Alan Dale. Franklins Meal 1) Breakfast. No doubt half the population of East Dulwich reads the Guardian and on the back of a fantastic review in a recent breakfast supplement Franklins, for a while at least, has become the fry-up destination of choice for the local chatterati. Not wishing to be left behind in this onslaught of gastronomic oneupmanship I duely pootled along the lane, consort in tow, and settled on a terrace bathed in sunlight only partly obscured by the dust cloud from the local roadworks. Previous patrons had left their payment on the table and there it remained for some time under our ever increasing fustration at being ignored. Even after it was removed our order was still not taken until buggins here, reaching the limit of patience, went inside and explained we would like someone to attend to us. Order placed; food arrived. Two of the full English breakfasts already legendary by reputation. A solitary sausage was slightly palid but tasty. Well seasoned and of good texture. One rasher of bacon seemed somwhat measley but it was not of sufficient excellence for me to care too highly. Black pudding was beyond reproach and would proudly grace any plate. Cherry tomatoes were succulent and mushrooms had a well rounded earthiness one looks for in funghi. Coffee was strong and hot, freshly squeezed orange juice was a final flourish. A good meal then spoiled only by somewhat lacsidasical staffing attitudes and the endless superlatives that had placed in on a pedastal no breakfast could hope to reach. Meal 2) Dinner. Huzzah. My birthday. Mom and Pop come up to the smoke to spoil me and off to Franklins we go encouraged by the good food from a previous visit and hopeful of better service on a Friday night than a Saturday morning. A quick pre-dinner drink is encouraging with a poor selection of real ales made up for with a single beer of high quality. And so the meal. And what a meal. Each dish sung with delight. Starters of black pudding (even better than last time should such a thing be possible), prawns and Welsh Rarebit all excelled and received plaudits. Mains of calves liver and also a chicken leg were well flavoured and hearty of portion. Special mention must be given to my partner's steak, however. A rump of short-horn it was one of the finest pieces of meat I have tasted in memory. Perfectly cooked and devoured with gusto. A truely standout plate of food. No desserts but good coffee. A half bottle of Sancerre zinged on the palate and a smooth Syrah accompanied the beef very nicely. The only tiny niggle was the ever present fridge cold butter that is impossible to spread without turning your slice of soft brown bread into crumbs. Not the cheapest of meals but nor should it have been for this level of quality. Service was dilligent and professional and the interior is cosy. One tip - try not to be seated at the back by the kitchen door. It is off-putting if not annoying. So....bravo to Franklins, yes? Not quite. Despite two good meals the ropey service of the first came back with a vengeance when a close friend reported back to me on her own visit. Staff were rude to the point of obnoxiousness and even went as far as questioning menu choices. Not to be repeated under any circumstance I would hope. The food is close to being without fault. The service however is erratic and is in need of consistency. Be warned, it can spoil an otherwise great venue.

Black Cherry - What's happened to it?
david_carnell replied to demery's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Very well. Tudor Court rules it is then. Hmm, well perhaps if you set up a thread to be played in the lounge and watch closely it should become sufficiently clear for you to join in. Obviously becoming a decent player will take many years, and my own level of grand-master a lifetime of devotion. -
Are you allowed to drive on Rye Lane at all?
david_carnell replied to trentk69's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not wishing to rub salt into the wound by any means but: Isn't Elm Grove one-way? If you had turned right into it from Holly Grove and then turned right onto Rye Lane you would have been going the wrong way down a one-way street for an, admittedly short, distance. Is that correct or am I talking nonsense? -

Which game do you need the rules for: Trumpington's Variations', or 'Tudor Court Rules'? -
Or a ecstasy pill. Much happier.

That's "Doctor" Gillian McKeith to you, James! Marmora Man Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Instead of the Potato Board as a whipping boy - > where do you stand on the Government Hospitality > Advisory Committee on the Purchase of Wine? (Apart > perhaps from wanting to join the tasting panel?) Not that I'm ignoring the rest of your more interesting points (I'll come back to those later) but this is more fun. Taken from the HoC Hansard in December: Francis Maude: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what the operating costs were of the Government Hospitality Advisory Committee for the Purchase of Wine in 2006-07; and how many full-time equivalent staff support the committee. Meg Munn: The operating costs of the Government Hospitality Advisory Committee for the Purchase of Wine amounted to approximately ?8,024 for financial year 2006-07. One Foreign and Commonwealth Office official, the Head of Government Hospitality, is Secretary to the Committee, spending approximately 10 to 15 per cent. of their time on support for the Committee and managing the Government cellar. Now, Governments hold receptions - wine is drunk. Would you prefer all heads of state to have tap water? And it costs ?8k a year. Next!
