  1. Nor Oakhurst Grove. I will bide my time.
  2. Carling Cup 1st round draw is already out. Leeds have been drawn away against the mighty titans of Chester. That'll be us out then :(
  3. Great article, thanks Piers.
  4. Oh, it's one of the most ineffective means to combate terrorism ever devised. And at a spiralling cost of some ?18billion (that's billion!!) it's a collosal waste of money. I mean let's pretend the govts right, and let's pretend the card is 100 percent successful. So now there's no terrorists using fake IDs. Does it reduce the threat of an attack? No. They will just find another way. Any anti-terrorist measure that forces a terrorist to change his tactics in a meaningless way is a waste of money.
  5. The problem with the principle of an ID card being more effective against identity fraud is that is that it actually increases the risk by containing all the valuable information in one place - in effect becoming a one-stop-shop for any criminals. Rather than trying to fraudulently acquire passport, driving license, NI number etc etc they would now need only one. My fear is that once you have a credential that everybody trusts, faking it becomes so much more valuable. There will be a false sense of security and you can abuse that
  6. The British government....
  7. Does it? What 3rd world countries have biometric ID cards?
  8. Still the same I'm afraid. I only go now if I've been unable to get down Lordship Lane on a Saturday. There is a meat stall - excellent quality, perhaps slightly more expensive than William Rose but not much, but only a very limited selection. A bread and cake stall - great choice and quality, the best stall there. Two veg stalls - quality varies but decent value and great seasonal selections One cheese stall - never tried it but looks ok Such a shame as it's a great spot outside the library but obviously there just isn't the market (no pun intended) for it.
  9. See, I was just forward thinking in my name choice!
  10. London: Some grotty club night called Loony Tunes (or maybe Toony Lunes) in Tufnell Park After School Club on the Strand Leeds: HiFi Mint Club Brudenell Social
  11. I'm thinking more Boden catalogue model. I bloody love the Boden catalogue for its hilarious Q&A sessions it has with the models on each page. Jeremy models stripy rugby shirt (?60) and beige chinos (?55) - deck shoes model's own Favourite tv show: Starsky & Hutch When I grow up I want to be.... a painter I'm doing this because: Calvin Klein said I was too old Sorry, back on topic: Yeah, litter, boo, hiss! Nero, be nice. James, calm down. End. Of.
  12. On a slight aside (only slightly as I too love the bread, cakes etc from Blackbird) can I also praise the almond croissants from the Peckham Farmers Market stall on a Sunday. Superb.
  13. Isn't it supposed to be the start of the month? The 18th seems aaaaaages away. I am however free for all dates so will not complain any further.
  14. fish Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > David Davis is to be applauded. Care to elaborate? I'm not looking for a fight, just wondered why you thought that? As much as I agree with all the things he is saying I wonder how much of this is political ego. Not to mention the possible damage it could do to his own party. People tend not to like being made to vote unnecessarily - not to mention that public opinion polls agree show the majority of people agree with the Govt on this issue. He could be on the end of a bloody nose.
  15. Woah! Political geeks alert! Shadow Home Secretary David Davis MP is resigning and standing down as an MP, triggering a by-election in his seat. Rumours suggest he may fight it himself in a bizarre attempt to challenge the Govt on 42 days detention. LibDem leader Nick Clegg offering not to put up a candidate. Highly strange. In fact, monumentally strange.
  16. Or makes the situation for fraud worse by having all details in one place rather than spread out. Someone gets my bank details - an arse but I still have other banks, my passport, NI number, NHS number etc all still safe. Someone gets my ID card data - they get everything. I'm screwed, am I not? Show me a data system that cannot be hacked/manipulated and I might reconsider.
  17. If you mean why does A look like A does then it's a gradual evolution of a picture - much like nearly all forms of writing today. "A" was originally a ox's head in Egyptian hieroglyphics which through the Phoenicians, Greeks and Etruscan's became the Roman A that we know and love today. I have no idea where its dipthong pronunciation comes from though. Wikipedia offers this which sounds quite romantic: Plutarch in Moralia, presents a discussion on why the letter alpha stands first in the alphabet. Ammonius asks Plutarch what he, being a Boeotian, thinks of Cadmus, the Phoenician who reputedly settled in Thebes and introduced the alphabet to Greece, placing alpha first because it is the Phoenician name for ox -- which, unlike Hesiod[2], the Phoenicians considered not the second or third, but the first of all necessities. "Nothing at all" Plutarch replied. He then added that he would rather be assisted by Lamprias, his own grandfather, than by Dionysus' grandfather, i.e. Cadmus. For Lamprias had said that the first articulate sound made is "alpha", because it is very plain and simple ? the air coming off the mouth does not require any motion of the tongue ? and therefore this is the first sound that children make. *Yawns* It just is, ok! Edit - beaten to it. That darned Piers and his knowledge!
  18. A worker? Woman's never done a day's work in her life.
  19. No worries Jaws...happy to oblige It's slightly more complicated than I made out with stuff like voltages, amps and resistance all needing to be taken into account but the basic idea is sound.
  20. For the same reason you wouldn't either - nor would you if you had both feet on the electric third rail - there has to be a path to earth. Electricity can jump small distances however so the 3rd rail trick is not to be advised. Should you find yourself light enough to be able to do so please feel free to dangle from the electric cables between pylons. Just don't touch anything else at the same time! The reason not to fly a kite near a power line is because this gives the electricity a route to earth - through you! Zzap!
  21. Thanks TT - a new word. And whilst googling Mondegreen (just to check you're not winding me up) I came across this and have to profess my own ignorance of the correct version. Just don't point and laugh next time you see me... http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/have_another_think_coming
  22. I rent all mine through Amazon (now LoveFilm). It works pretty well for ?8 a month.
  23. In the wake of an un-named forumite receiving some Wire-themed headwear in the pub last night, does anyone own or know where to get any Wire merchandise? I've found one t-shirt I quite like but wondered if there is anything better? Edit: ebay apparently
  24. As a young boy (and I mean young) I thought the hymn "Lord of the Dance" had the chorus "I am the Lord of the dancing tea". Despite the name of the hymn giving it away, I had envisaged dancing teapots and cups a la Beauty and the Beast. Bizarre.
  25. That'll be three.
