BBC: important institution or passed sell by date
david_carnell replied to mamafeelgood's topic in The Lounge
No mama you are not the only one who belives that. I continue to believe that the BBC provides a service far in excess of the cost of its license fee. You only have to watch SkyOne for a day to see that its competitors who rely on advertising funding have a poor output by comparison. BBC4 is, at last, a channel that does not pander to the lowest common denominator and the range of digital radio stations the BBC provides is outstanding. I, for one, hope it continues to be revered as an august institution and treated with respect by both government and the commercial media. The fact that it is unique in being able to ignore commercial pressures enable it to provide content second to none. -
Got to disagree, sorry. I quite like their stuff. It's not high fashion, nor does it proclaim to be. It does go for the preppy-surfer-shabby-chic thing which, I grant you is not everyones cuppa, but I'm pretty pleased with my one purchase. It is a little over-priced but not compared to its direct competitors such as Jack Wills. The staff were helpful and the shop front is quite attractive. I might go back for the odd thing now and again but I wouldn't advise anyone to have a whole wardrobe from one place including White Stuff. Edit: I agree about Banana Republic though...great place (and hats).

There must be a draught of 20-something bowls players ready to take the scene by storm. Where do I sign? -
Clearly Gordon Brown is a reader of the EDF as this morning this appeared on the Downing Street webpage. So, like most of us thought, bollocks from the start.

East Dulwich Constitutional Club

Michael Palaeologus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Its not the Tories that would be a Conservative > Club. The clue being in the name. > I'm afraid not. Despite not being called "The Conservative Club" the Constitution Club is very much aligned to the Conservative Party (as evidenced by many other who have been there). Whether you think that's a good thing I suppose is up to you. Pictures of the Queen AND Maggie Thatcher might put me off my beer though. -
We all know the fragrant and ever-so-lovely East Dulwich Mum has her own blog, and it appears from another thread that Keef has started one too. Do any other EDF people have one they are willing to share? I'll own up to this. I wirte it jointly with a guy at work so if you find any of it offensive he wrote those bits and I did the funny stuff (hopefully). The musings of Mme Mao Can you recommend any that you regularly read yourself?

I tried cashback at Somerfield and the limit is ?30. That's not exactly going to go far for a weekly food shop around LL is it?! Bloody disgrace this weekend with cashpoints. Barclays should be ashamed of their service.

Famous People in Sainsburys

I did see Jeremy Bowen in there the other week. He looked rather dishevelled. Probably just back from Basra or something. Skiver! -
Ahh, if only we were in Leeds. I went to university in that fine city where chips accompany everything (including Chinese food, curries and anything else one can think of that would normally be accompanied by a different carbohydrate or vegetable). They have them down to a fine art with Bretts in Headingley still frying everything in beef dripping. Not for the diet conscious, health conscious or vegetarians, but my god, they were good chips. I've not found anywhere nearly as good since so I'm listening keenly to the outcome of this thread.

Since mid-July, so only 2 months!! Am I the most recent addition of all the EDF members? Before that I had lived in Cheam and then Epsom in Surrey. This is a bit of an improvement from deepest, darkest Surrey I can tell you.

And me and the missus from about 3:30-4:15. Could have been EDF drinks if we'd known who each other were!

Went last week for an anniversary. Excellent seafood platter to start but mains were a little over-cooked (surely a rarity in a French restaurant - normally a good vet can still save some of their dishes!). The bread rolls are, indeed, still anaemic. Wine list is excellent with good half-bottles available. Service was very good. Bill was hefty but not outrageous. Atmosphere and decor are fabulous. I'd go back but maybe for lunch rather than a la carte in the evening.

I'll see your Billy Ocean with the cream of eighties super-stardom: Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer which suddenly made me think of: MC Hammer - Can't touch this and through train of thought to: DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Boom Boom Shake the Room I'm done now, sorry.

I'm up for it.... Clare, fancy representing the mighty, mighty Whites of Elland Rd at a table footy comp in SE London?!! And they say its only Man Utd supporters who don't live in the city of the team they support. Pah!

Although I measure heat in farenheit (i.e. 100 equals hot) I measure cold in centigrade (i.e. 0 equals freezing). Weird non? Height - ft and inches Weight - kilos except at the butchers/greengrocers when I revert to lbs (and I'm under 30!) Distance - metres then miles (?!) Fluids (no laughing at the back) - pints then litres for higher figures Area - acres (I was once told it is roughly one football pitch and is therefore easy to visualise) God, no wonder the English are seen as eccentric.

Ah ha! The Old Crown

I think there is precendent for locals owning their own pub but can't remember where I read about it. I'll have a butcher's and see if I can find out. That would be awesome. We all put in money and receive a small share of the profits with a say in how the place is run - which beers, wines, snacks etc or whether to invest in a new pair of curtains! I'm in. Does ?5 get me a share?

No I have not been to the Rough Trade East as it is known but having just looked at it on their website plan to go in my time off from work next week.
-
I'm just about to start series 2 so please no spoliers! You are right about most people not lasting past episode two (my missus) but it is worth it. As for favourite characters it has to be Lester Freamon. Quiet nd unassuming and yet the mastermind of the police unit.

I think the music shops you refer to Gerrard are ones that sell sheet music and instruments. Very nice but what I had in mind was vintage vinyl and CDs. Something like Rough Trade, Jumbo Records or Beanos! Maybe with some books thrown in for the intelligensia.
-
Oh yes...I remember talking to you about this before MW74 and we agreed, if only for Mr MW74's sake, then a music shop would be a must. Perhaps the owners of Rough Trade should be emailed forthwith. On an aside I seem to remember you saying Mr MW74 is a big fan of Springsteen. The London Paper reports he's playing the 02 Dome around Xmas time. I'm waiting for official confirmation.
