  1. I've no idea Jeremy. The BECTU website doesn't say. Perhaps other branches aren't heavily unionised or pay is decided locally rather than centrally through a sort of franchise model? But I agree a Picturehouse-wide ballot would have been more useful.
  2. Ah, a link to a Daily Mail article as proof of a dubious scientific hypothesis whilst also promoting your business that offers said service to people who may be vulnerable and desperate. Good stuff. Keep it coming.
  3. Ritzy workers are striking from 6am till 12am to receive the London Living Wage. Supporters are being asked not to cross the picket line. More info: http://www.brixtonblog.com/ritzy-pay-row-union-members-to-strike-on-friday-april-11/21514
  4. There's one in Peckham on Lyndhurst Grove by the Academy. Not sure it would survive the school kids though...
  5. Try Fire Island for laid back charm...

    Rye Lane

I'm actually quite happy with the shops themselves although I guess the lure of nail bars and afro hairdressers isn't designed for me. But I'm allowed an opinion that the street is cluttered, dirty and can be less than fun to shop on. That's hardly controversial. Why do you think it's acceptable to be left in that state?

    Rye Lane

There is a happy middle ground. KK is right when he says that these shops serve the community and there is no need to be scared of them or seek to force them to leave. However, Lou's gripes about cleanliness of some premises and of the street in general could certainly do with improving to make the place more friendly to shop. It is a narrow lane. Shops spilling out onto the pavement with their wares makes navigating it even harder. A return to proper frontages or clear demarcations would surely be sensible. I don't think anyone can enjoy hair balls and chicken bones on the street. That isn't a plea to close those shops, but to the shops, their customers (!) and the council to try and ensure that litter is dealt with quickly.
  8. Wow. That is fast. Almost makes me feel some sympathy for Piers Morgan in facing Brett Lee. Almost.
  9. I couldn't get out the e3nd of Maxted the other night after being trapped behind an overseas coach! The thing got stuck turning onto Nutbrook let alone onto Adys. I think it comes from the Peckham Lodge and is trying to get out onto the South Circular or similar and the satnav takes it thru narrow residential streets. Utter madness. It blocked traffic in three directions. Good jnob it was late at night and not rush hour tbh. Others have seen HGVs come up and down. It's crazy but not sure how you could stop it. What would be the alternative route for them? Along to Camberwell and down Dog Kennel Hill I guess....

    Rye Lane

Well clearly quite a few "of the same thing" since they are thriving. It gives customers choice and keeps prices competetive. It serves a demographic majority. I know that's not you, Lou, but is does serve lots of others. However, I do agree it is a neglected and sometimes unpleasant shopping environment. There is more needed from both shop keepers and the council to make the area more attractive. Vibrant and diverse does not need to mean dirty and polluted.
  11. A, I believe, unique feature of the Blythe is that to get to the back room you have to, and are permitted, to walk through the bar. Neat-o.
  12. What do you use to swaddle? We used something called a woombie which was escape proof. It also makes your child look like a giant slug which I found greatly amusing.
  13. Thanks all. Good points about the weather. DCJnr doesn't seem a big fan of wet and cold so far so might be wise to wait till Easter time. Indoor stuff till then perhaps.
  14. I think the trouble is that sat-navs direct you down Adys, Nutbrook and Maxted out onto Bellenden Rd and through to the High St towards Camberwell. I've seen lorries get stuck at various points. We either need width restrictors to block large vehicles or something to ease their progress to prevent these sort of accidents. Currently we seem between the two. I'd be in favour of the former by some distance.
  15. There is a place. On the way to Catford. SJ and I have been and it is exactly what you're after. The Blythe Hill Tavern Just off the South Circular on the way to Catford. Much, much nicer than that description could offer.
  16. Not always so. The Montague Arms in New Cross/Peckham borders which closed in early 2013 and has been boarded up ever since (and I thought was destined to become flats) has been bought and due to re-open as a "steam-punk inspired" pub. Expect copper piping everywhere and barstaff in goggles!
  17. Hi Is Ruggerbeez still running? Their website has been useless since xmas. Anyone have experience of comparing them to the other mini-rugby offerings: rugger-tots, rugby munchkins etc? DC Jnr turns 2 at the end of this month and keen to get him outdoors and getting some exercise on a weekend morning.
  18. Is the entire warehouse closing or just some of the stalls within it? For instance, is the children's shoe shop going too?
  19. That is interesting Sue - cheers for that. I frequented Hoopers intermitently, mainly for rugby games on tv, and was sad to see it go.

  22. Otta - I generally dislike most Sam Smith's pubs for the following: Beer - poor ale selection, badly kept. Always icy cold and tastes like crap. Staff - poorly paid, surly. Cleanliness - spotless with the overpowering smell of bleach Interiors - while the actual fabric of the buildings can be nice their furniture is proper shabby. And not nice shabby. They've taken over lots of very nice pubs and I've yet to see one improved.

Have you bothered to investigate the people behind that site? You know, to check they aren't quacks? Dr Suzanne Humphries for instance - listed as one of their board of directors and the author of the wibble you linked to. http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2011/02/16/dr-suzanne-humphries-and-the-internation/ http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2010/07/19/i-know-you-are-but-what-am-i-medical-voi/ She's a homeopath - I wouldn't trust her opinion on the weather if she had her head stuck out the window.
  24. Well, my contract forbids drinking during work hours but post work drinks should be a lot better than here in Victoria.
  25. DaveR wins the prize. Good man.
