  1. Quite.... so surely an attempt to measure it would be the first stage. Otherwise you cannot know whether any measures you take to improve it have been successful. A BBC article from a few years ago highlights some (admittedly simplistic) methods. I'm willing to at least give the govt the benefit of the doubt for the moment.
  2. Why, Loz? I'm not advocating tracking this women down and putting her in stocks. In fact, beyond keeping an eye out for your own personal safety and property, I've advocated no action at all. Except for what the shop keeper has already done and should be applauded for. Presumably you also think this thread is wrong and should be deleted for defamation? Have you reported it to Admin?
  3. I was being flippant whilst drawing attention to the fact that it's not that difficult to measure abstract concepts like happiness (or grumpiness). I disagree that it's a waste of money. Happiness is very important especially during a period of little economic growth. You can devise policies that whilst it may not put more money in people's pockets might make them happier. In fact I'd rather society in general was more happiness driven that money orientated - but then as Quids will point out I'm a bleeding heart liberal do-gooder so what do I know?! I'm not a qualitative researcher though I've studied it and used it in the past. I agree with you that in this instance it's probably not much more than a stunt by this govt but I don't think the principle should be dismissed with a hand wave and a dose of cynicism. It's too important for that.
  4. I can reckon I can accurately measure how grumpy you are!
  5. I'm with Mike P on this. I think any attempt to measure happiness and a determination to improve happiness, wellbeing and general mental health should be welcomed. Incidentally, those countries with low inequality score highest on mental health indexes. And Emerson, it's actually quite easy to measure if you're a qualitative researcher.

Whilst I agree to an extent, it's a little chicken and egg here. The desire to test and tabulate children and schools, and to therefore determine rank, is as much driven by aspirational parents (who simply have to know that the school that little Toby will be going to is top of the pile locally) as it is by oleaginous politicians looking to score points.
  8. I'd suggest the evidence is there Loz, it's more the police haven't identified the culprit or lack the resources to investigate. Sadly, this low level crime often goes unsolved....much like bike theft. Even more reason why fair-minded citizens should carry this forward themselves.
  9. And for those concerned about data protection, there is an exemption in the DPA for administration of justice and prevention of crime, so I would presume the shopkeeper would be protected by that. Defamation action could be pursued if case is wrongful however.
  10. Quite. Only two posts from a newly registered user both lauding one particular estate agent. My spidey sense is tingling. Munki.....you work for KFH and I claim my ?5.

The picture used may not have been one that captured her stealing as perhaps those shots didn't reveal her face. I would hazard that the shop keeper having viewed the footage and seeing the women steal then chose a frame that best captured her theiving features for all to see. Despite my liberal pinko credentials, I'm with Hugenout here. This is not the thin end of the wedge that will unquestionably lead to burning witches. This women IS a thief. She was caught red handed on film. If she has an excuse, such as mental illness, I assume she would come forward and say so (or her carer would). If she is a thief she may also resort to other crime. Therefore it is in the public interest that we are all alerted to her and not merely the staff who work in the shop. If I saw her in another shop I would alert staff that she may be liable to steal from them. That is being a responsible citizen. I want to address the causes of crime. I believe in rehabilitation over punishment. But that does not mean we turn a blind eye or wring our hands to this sort of behaviour in our own neighbourhood.
  12. Sounds more like a faulty alternator or perhaps a drain somewhere rather than a faulty battery itself. I'd ask around for recommendations for a decent mechanic to have a look at it for you if you don't trust your garage. Battery chargers are plugged into the mains.
  13. Old thread to the fore shocker! One fo the greatest pop songs of all time given a decent reworking. Coming to a John Lewis Xmas ad near you soon.
  14. Currently closed in both directions due to an "incident" (explosions at MI6) - this may have knock on effects this evening for those travelling by bus/car/bike. Please be aware.
  15. Real politik I'm afraid EC. We (the UK) do huge amounts of trade with Ireland (about ?70bn per year I believe). If their economy tanked that would go down the swanny and we'd be in a far worse position than simply lending them ?7bn. And if and when we were in a similar position, there would be many nations offering similar loans. It would be in their national interest too. On an aside, it is interesting to note that back in 2006 George Osborne was lauding the Irish Tiger as the economic model the UK should be following. Lack of regulation and low business tax equalled unparalleled success according to George. Hmmmm......
  16. Another Italian restaurant apparently.
  17. Sarah I can't answer your query but will say "thank you" for being an exemplery business in asking permission before just randomly posting. If only more would read the rules first and then ask questions (like you) the forum-world would be a happier place. Bravo.
  18. So from 1977 to 1982 English clubs won the European Cup 6 times in a row and again in 1984. We also had the runners up in 1975. At the national level though we failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1974 and 1978. In 1982 we were eliminated in the second round (despite not losing a match) and reached the quarter finals in 1986. Hardly stella. At the Euros, England didn't qualify in 1976, went out in the group stage in 1980 and failed to qualify again in 1984. Terrible. So whatever it is that enabled those club sides to do so well, it wasn't working for England. I'd suggest, in Liverpool's case, it was a lack of English players that helped (Leeds too come to think of it - our best Englishman, Clarke, was barely picked)!
  19. I'm set to go then!
  20. What, exactly, should I be doing to be fully prepared. I'm not being flippant either....if I buy into this "end of days" stuff what sort of things will see me through it?
  21. I tend to cook eggs from the fridge so not helpful here. Lowered gently into boiling water so the shell doesn't crack and cooked for 5-6mins according to size of egg. I find trying to boil from cold leaves too much room for error given the time taken to boil the water varying on different pans and when is boiling or when is beginning to bubble etc etc

Olive oil Groundnut oil Vinegars - red wine, white wine, cider, balsamic, malt, preserving Sea salt Pepper corns Fats - beef and duck Tomato paste Stock cubes Tins tomatoes Capers Jar of anchovies Mustards - English, French, Wholegrain Worcestshire sauce Pastas Cous cous Rices - basmati, risotto, pudding, long grain Smoked paprika Harissa paste Curry spices - tumeric, cumin, cardomon, garam masala, coriander Flours - corn, semolina, white, bread, wholemeal, rye etc Pancetta Chorizo Probably other stuff too.....

  24. As the person who suggested the microwave first do I get a free sarnie when they go live? And, more importantly for a wine bar, what do I get to drink with it? :))
