I don't think a Queen's speech pledge mounts to much until it becomes as Act like Benn's Bill, so I'm guessing either could be changed during the next parliamentary session. Whether the speech passes or not will probably depend on the Tory rebels, likewise any vote of no confidence. A lot has been said about the Lib Dems not supporting Corbyn in an alternative Gov, but it's a moot point as together they don't have the numbers without the Tory rebels, they are the real king makers at the moment. Personally I'm hoping for an extension up to June to allow for a referendum and/or an election...

JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > ...and if the Queens speech is voted down is > that automatically an election ?. No, not under the FTPA, explainer from Institute of Gov't... The Queen?s Speech can be voted down. This would be of major political significance, as it would clearly call into question the ability of the government to command the confidence of Parliament. Historically, a defeat on the address has been treated as an implicit loss of confidence in a government as it suggests that there is no majority to be found in the Commons for its programme for government. It is rare for the government to be defeated on the address in the Commons ? as governments usually have a majority in the House. But it has happened ? most recently in 1924, when Stanley Baldwin?s minority government was defeated. Baldwin then resigned as prime minister, and the opposition went on to form a new government. As no government has been defeated on the address since the passage of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act (FTPA) in 2011, it is unclear what would happen if such a situation were to arise. This is because a defeat on the address would not meet the requirements under the FTPA to trigger an election. But any defeat might encourage the opposition to then table a formal vote of no confidence, under the FTPA, in the government. There would also be intense political pressure on the government.

As achievements go that's quite a biggie. As for parliamentary specifics, a number of Acts that otherwise would've been lost had prorogation not been annulled, one being on domestic violence...

The problem is overly keen 'journalists' report this nonsense in order to get a scoop, without checking accuracy, legitimacy and applying any semblance of critical thought. They are useful idiots, being played, nothing more than propaganda conduits. Expect more of the same tactic until journalists start naming these 'sources'...

Double glazing recommendation for Scenic Glazing

I beg to differ, the plastic ones look like they have stuck-on glazing beads and they haven't even bothered to replicate the arched corners of each main sash panel. I much prefer the original timber windows downstairs and in the adjacent property... -

Being one of a select few who are privileged (and rich) enough to reside on Melbourne Grove in a detached double fronted house, I'm surprised that you can hear your neighbours. Perhaps try switching off Alexa before retiring to bed...

''the huge sums the U.K. gives to the EU each year.'' Huge? More a sliver In the context of our overall spend. You're also conveniently forgetting all the benefits of EU membership such as access to the largest trading bloc resulting in jobs, cheaper food and commodities etc, easily outweighing what we pay. Post-Brexit forecasts including the Gov's own, predict Brexit will make us worse off by affecting UK businesses and therefore the economy, jobs, NHS, education etc, all suffering as a consequence of Brexit, again easily outweighing what we pay...
