  2. I felt the same, never considered myself much of a unionist, but I did think we were 'better together'. Friends I have in Scotland, including English settled there, all now think the same. I suspect the Tories aren't that bothered, we've seen how they were prepared to throw NI and their DUP friends under the Brexit bus, and it won't have gone unnoticed to Tory strategists that without the Scottish vote how difficult it will be in the future to ever kick the Tories out of power...

  5. Sturgeon is savvy enough to know that getting rid of Trident wouldn't pass a vote through parliament due to Labour rebels and Lib Dems etc. A different matter if they win independence though...

  7. Scotland will get a 2nd indy ref at some point in the next couple of years regardless of who wins the GE. They are going to do well in the GE and then the Scottish Parliament will vote for a 2nd indy ref, which even Johnson if he wins won't be able to ignore. I'd argue that there's more chance of the Union splitting under Johnson and Brexit than Corbyn and a 2nd ref...

This all smacks of Corbyn trying to leave a legacy before he joins you down the allotment. Any nationalised concern should at least pay for itself in the long run, and this clearly wouldn't unless there's a way of generating income like the free newspapers do with advertising. I think it would've still been a popular proposal if they had said charges would be greatly reduced, say 50% less, and it would be free for those less able to pay, pensioners, low income families etc. Maybe that would have to happen, it wouldn't be the first time a manifesto policy was watered down once reality kicks in...

Indeed, worth remembering that f we Brexit, whoever wins will have their political aspirations severely undermined and limited by Brexit, it will continue to take up time and money, sucking the life out of everything around it...

I didn't say the NHS etc were nationalised industries, I was merely giving examples of what happens when you underinvest, same applies to private companies. I'm not pro-nationalisation for the sake of it, but I don't think it should be dismissed either, and it's lazy to keep harping back to ''look what happened in the '70's''. As BB points out it's a completely different market place now which includes successful nationalised companies, let's learn why they have been successful and can it be reciprocated in the UK. To me the Labour manifesto is Corbyn's last hurrah before he leaves the political stage, either by resigning should Johnson get a majority, or a coalition Gov falling once a 2nd Ref has taken place. So the whole nationalisation argument is a bit of a moot point...

  15. The end of today is the deadline for registering to vote, with this link you can register, check whether you're already registered and at what address (if you've moved home you may still be registered at your old address, hence your polling card will be sent there instead of your new address), if you're going to be abroad on GE day you can arrange a proxy vote, and if you're a student you're allowed to register at both your home and term-time addresses (but only vote once - one for the tactical voters to think about)... https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

  18. Jules-and-Boo Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We give contracts to other countries eg > trains/France because we are in the EU and EU > countries are allowed to bid There's nothing about being in the EU that says we have to give them the contracts, instead they are winning them fairly and squarely in open, competitive tenders against UK privately owned companies. So in fact it confirms that state ownership can be more competitive than private ownership. Also, non-EU countries win these sort of contracts, Hinkley Point power station is being funded and built by the French EDF and Chinese CGN, who also happen to be both state-owned. So not being in the EU wouldn't mean that EU companies wouldn't suddenly be able to bid for future contracts. We will have to negotiate new trade deals with them and part of those deals will be to allow them to bid along with lots of other concessions such immigration quotas. Same applies to any new trade deals outside the EU, the big US pharmas are already licking their lips and waiting to pounce on the NHS...

The Tories are warning voters that Jeremy Corbyn would wreck the economy. I?m sure they?re right. I?ve got just one question. Why should the rest of the country believe them? After all, many Tories have spent the past three years telling the public to ignore all predictions about the economy, because predictions about the economy are always wrong. Lurid depictions of economic armageddon are merely Project Fear. Our great British businesses will thrive no matter what, and to suggest otherwise is to talk Britain down. If we can survive the Blitz, we can survive anything. And anyway, some things are more important than money.
