What a terrible shame. We need to rely on investment from private firms to ensure our parks are sustainable, and we should be grateful we don?t have the number of restricted days some other boroughs parks have. Very depressing future for our public spaces. And it seems the council and elected councillors support this move too. Sad. Louisa.

Went in today. Lovely little addition to the high street. Lots of sweets from my childhood, helpful friendly staff. A lot better than the branch in Greenwich. I wish them well. Louisa.

I?ve heard horror stories about the shoreditchification of the area around PR station. Out of towners weeing in the streets after a night on the tiles. It?s disrespectful when others have to live and work in the area. I don?t know what the answer is, but I know that everyone should be made to feel welcome, and not excluded. But the reality is money talks. And if businesses and events think they can attract a certain audience to a certain location based on the notion of a neighbourhood suddenly being ?discovered? and ?cool?, they?ll bang that drum (no pun intended), and rinse that pound note for all its worth. The least the council can do is be a bit more understanding to those who live and work nearby, whoever they may be. We can?t stop the G word, but we can manage the negative side effects surely? Louisa.

The moment well to do (and let?s face it) mostly white people miraculously ?discover? previously ?neglected? working class London neighbourhoods, these issues occur. Twenty years ago no one would have dreamt about having a festival in our back yard. But surprise, surprise the moment the trendy fashionable types want to live in and spend time in our neighbourhood, we all have to be ?thankful? that a private company is using our public spaces to host these events for these people. Regardless of the noise and environmental costs for residents. You may think I?m banging the same old drum, but I think I have a valid point here. At what stage do residents get to have a say on what happens in their own back garden? Are our high streets now a free for all for out of towners to defecate and vomit in after a night of partying? Does our park only get partially annexed once a year or maybe in time money talks and they can have the whole space for various times during the summer? The old elephant in the room, the G word strikes again, but we all have to keep pretending that?s not relevant, and that we should all be grateful people come here to have fun and new shops/restaurants should now only cater for their tastes and not anyone else. Louisa.

God knows why they don?t want an election, because both them and Labour are unelectable currently, as the European Elections have proved. Louisa.

It?s all great unless you?re the one living in close proximity to the noise, mess and damage left behind after the annexed public space has been vacated some 12 days later. I don?t live immediately nearby though, so why should I care? As long as it doesn?t affect me that?s just fine. Seems to be the attitude of most people nowadays. Louisa.

The Old Jaflong Restaurant to become a Pizza place
Loutwo replied to DulwichFox's topic in The Lounge
It seems our local historic ties with Indian/Bangladeshi eateries is slowly coming to an end. A heritage going back over 40 years now. If we continue to lose these cherished stalwarts of LL it will be the beginning of the end. How anyone can want Pizzas chains over independent Indian restaurants amazes me. The very people who love local, love independent, picking and choosing what they want depending on their own preferences. People saying how great pizza is (even though we all know it?s the same old thing under a different label or name), and at the same time suggesting all our Indian restaurants locally are the same westernised version of authentic Indian cuisine. Food snobbery at its best. Louisa. -

We don?t need a high street for exclusive needs of foodies. People need shops they can use, they also need affordable options. If we didn?t already have at least a dozen pizzerias within spitting distance I would of course be very happy for said genre of gastronomic delights to open locally, but that isn?t the case. A restaurant wouldn?t be my first choice, but if that?s all that we are to get then some diversity would be nice. A decent Morrocan or Mexican wouldn?t be as expensive as you suggest. They?re often way healthier and you get more for your money than you do at a pizza joint. Louisa. -

If you walk down LL nowadays, you?ll find less Indians (four in total from the EDT to the Plough and one is take away only), and at present two pizzerias and one italian restaurant (so not sure if that can be included) and of course this new one. The reason foxy has started no new threads about Indian restaurants is because no new ones have opened, and one has relocated. Pizza is unhealthy. Why don?t we have a decent Mexican or Morrocan in the area? Louisa. -

Sephiroth, as you know, I am not one to instigate an argument, but I am one who will call out the elephant in the room. Do we REALLY need yet another pizza establishment in ED? Serious question. Because I can name at least two hands worth of different types of pizza within a quarter of a mile, and that?s a very conservative estimate. Louisa. -

Dress it up however you like, we have a high street aimed at wealthy foody types, at the expense of a useable high street which reflects the wider population. Those are the uneasy facts, which are of course, uncomfortable for the metropolitan elite to have to admit to. Louisa. -

Foxy it?s cold because it?s it?s a wafer thin dough that?s been topped with various inedible ingredients. In Italy it?s a snack, they don?t treat it like a dinner. Not like people here do. Louisa. -

A new pizza place when there is something similar less than 50 yards in the other direction seems ludicrous to me, and many others I?m sure. We currently need a lot of things on this high street, but we don?t have them. Mostly because, the wealthy foodies can bring in more money than useable shops for ordinary people. Money speaks, as usual. Also I don?t need patronising on what cheese on toast looks like, and yes FYI, I am being ironic here. Louisa. -

On this point I have to agree. Authentic Welsh Rarebit pisses all over pizzas bonfire party! Wait til the metro elite find out about it, it?ll be 10 quid a pop in some lifeless artisan spot on a edgy high street somewhere. Louisa. -

Pizzas are awful. Unhealthy, full of fat and bad carbs. Basically a dolled up bit of Welsh Rarebit. If this continues, our high street will be the exclusive destination for wealthy foodies and no one else. Sad news. Louisa. -
I can confirm upon visiting both the Peckham and ED branches, that some goods I looked at are more expensive in our local branch. Not something I had ever taken notice of before. Louisa.

That?s not true. The offering available in Londis included lottery, National/international/magazine selection, and 24/7 access to food/alcohol/tobacco products way more diverse than anything else within a mile of ED. Louisa.

I?d love a pound shop on lordship lane. But probably not very appealing to the local champagne socialists. Superdrug will do though. Louisa.

I think affordable chains alongside valuable independents keep any high street viable. People arguing for exclusive independent high streets are (IMO), hinting that they want an exclusively expensive bunch of shops only accessible to some local residents, and not everyone. What?s wrong with a few affordable chains to help boost footfall and make LL inclusive for all socio economic groups in ED? Louisa.
