  1. With respect, foxy has a valid point. The rise of Hitler was a second attempt by the German state, under a dictator, to take over Europe and unite it under the Third Reich. It began with the annexation of ?German speaking? regions of various neighbouring countries throughout the 1930?s and ended with them eyeing up the Soviet Union. The EU has done a lot of good things for Europe, but it has also done a lot of not so good things. It?s treatment of Greece for one, is a shameful stain on its reputation. I think we should remain, but not because I absolutely love this capitalist loving institution for wealthy unelected elites, but because I am a pragmatist who thinks we are so badly entangled within its structure we could potentially cause a lot of immediate and possibly long lasting damage to our economy. However, all these remain marches and two fingers at democracy make me feel very uneasy. As I?m sure they do a lot of people. Louisa.
  2. I changed my mind on Brexit soon after voting. I still think we should remain. But the more I see these protests talking about ?democracy? the more the remain camp is pushing me and like minded folk away. I have to be honest here. Louisa.
  3. Come off it. These new businesses in Peckham aren?t part and parcel of the existing community. They?re new businesses aimed at a specific demographic who have only very recently moved into the neighbourhood. You only have to read previous comments on this thread. What?s this character that Rye Lane has kept? Do you know how gentrification works? LL retained much of its character to begin with, as I?m sure Shoreditch and Dalston did 20 years ago. But how long will that last? The whole point of these new businesses is not to blend in, but to change the character and demographic of the place and then house prices go up (which they?re already doing) and before you know it we have another Northcote Road on our hands. Let?s not pretend this isn?t actually happening. Louisa.

Strange response. BTW it took me to have to question people BEFORE anyone responded with actual names of OTHER independent/chain stores In the Peckham area. Before that, it was just discovered places by trendy types who came here post 2013. You might want to re-read my post above, rather than try to accuse me of something more sinister which anyone who knows me would verify is utter BS. Or maybe you?re just doing it to goad me because you actually support gentrification in Peckham? Louisa.
  5. Fire, ianr, I?m on fire! Louisa.
  6. Indeed. Gentrification is a way to force normal locals out, and attract a artsy/wealthy crowd looking for a bargain. These people want to shape areas like East Dulwich to suit their taste, they have no intention of becoming part of the existing community. Same is true of Peckham. Look at some of the earlier comments on this very thread, newbies to the neighbourhood talking about businesses they go to in Peckham and take their friends and family too from wealthy rural localities. They only mention places that sprung up to satisfy their needs. This stuff wasn?t put their for the whole community. It?s hilarious reading back over this thread. Gentrifiers don?t even see the irony in the fact that they are actually part of the problem. They just see themselves as liberal down with the poor crusaders looking for an edgy neighbourhood to boast about with their wealthy friends and family. Louisa.
  7. Bromley. It offers something for everyone. And I mean, everyone. Lewisham, again, offers something for everyone. Croydon, offers something for everyone too. Peckham and Dulwich DO NOT. Louisa.
  8. I hear pizza Go-Go is really good. Louisa.
  9. There?s a fine line between too gentrified, and not gentrified enough. In fact, scrap that. Rye Lane and LL both lack variety. They have a whole host of too much of the same stuff. A lack of variety in general. LL looks and smells OK, Rye Lane looks and smells disgusting. Neither of them offer much for the whole population of the areas they represent. Louisa.

Louisa.
  11. Foxy is simply pointing out the elephant in the room. Rye Lane is a smelly, grotty dump which has been taken to the hearts of hipsters and middle class gentrification types. Interesting to note, many of the positive places and ?stuff? going on in trendy Peckham, is all recent stuff aimed at newbies to the neighbourhood. These so called liberal minded types never mention the businesses already existing in the neighbourhood do they? Just the ?discovered? crap they and their trendy friends and family like to visit. Louisa.

Hear, hear. I think prison sentences are too good for these people. I feel sending them out to the middle of the Atlantic in a small rowing boat, would be a more apt punishment. Louisa.

    Brexit View

Brexit is now far less likely than ever before. I wonder if Boris has done this on purpose to create a Pinscher movement from the lagging remainers, so he can point fingers when Brexit doesn?t happen, call a GE, galvanise support to win a majority, and walk away from the whole Brexit debacle scott free. Or something like that. Louisa.
  15. So, why are so many people starting responses these days with this rather patronising and lazy sentence opener? I am noticing it more and more, and it is becoming a ?so? epidemic. It?s such a conversational downgrade, and when used in the media or by people who should know better it seems to grate me even more. No excuse for poor grammar and lifeless responses. Any opinions? Louisa.
  16. Nah that?s BS, sorry Seabag. There?s a difference between evolution of a neighbourhood, decline or prosper, it?s all relative. But when a artificial and absolute take over happens, the dreaded G word is to blame. People aren?t lamenting a treasured past, they?re simply looking back over their own existence and comparing and contrasting. Entirely different to having their offspring unable to buy in the same neighbourhood their parents and grandparents grew up in. That?s not right, that?s the market out of control. And it?s not just Dulwich or Peckham, London or New York. It?s happening the western world over, and shifting populations at a whim and entirely to the mercy of market forces. Not fair. Louisa.
  17. Usual suspects causing trouble. You?ll have egg on your faces when Bill?s do open. Will I get an apology? Unlikely. Louisa.
  18. I can only go by information supplied to me via the local paper shop. I am a regular since Londis on LL closed. The chap told me Bill?s had been looking into opening locally for a while. I can only assume they?re either staying quiet until they can verify they?ll be taking a lease on for certain, or until they?ve put forward planning permission for signage and reconfiguration of the layout etc watch this space I would say. Louisa.
  19. I can see a few chipped shoulders that need a dash of salt and vinegar around these here parts. Or is it curry sauce? Or gravy? Or maybe even lasagne god forbid. Louisa.

You finding the time to question someone else?s motives behind their dislike of pizza and opinions on chips and condiments. And you call me pathetic? I rest my case. Louisa.
  21. Actually pk, I think you?ll find Wetherspoons offer chips as a side to most of their main menu dishes, if not all of them. Nothing weird about that. However, there are limits when it comes to mixing certain things. Personally, I am not a big fan of chips unless they come with ham and eggs, or fish. Call me old fashioned. That?s just how I roll. I don?t understand why you would want to mix carbs with carbs, it just seems strange. Louisa.
  22. Seabag I?ve had enough of this. There?s nothing wrong with people eating what they like. You know me, I?m not one to judge when it comes to people making decisions about food. However, there are limits. How anyone could be poncy enough to mix a pub classic like lasagne with oven chips I will never know. Never heard of the like. Louisa.
  23. I once went to a lovely chippy in West Lothian, and had a black pudding supper with salt and ?sauce? - a sort of runny brown sauce. It was bloody lovely. With a can of Irn Bru of course! When I go to a greasy spoon the last thing I wanna eat is lasagne. I?d rather have a fry up or egg and chips. If I want something fancy like lasagne I?d rather go in Wetherspoons thanks all the same! Louisa.
  25. Who on earth East chips with lasagne? Surely a nice salad and garlic bread is the only route? Bizarre choice. Louisa.
