you get the arm flap, and you fold it round the arm like a shawl and then tuck the remaining material of the flap under the baby's back, and then do exactly the same on the other side, or at least, that's what we did! do you see what I mean or should I think of another way to explain it? there's a video clip of how to do it here

When swaddling are you using a regular cellular blanket or something thinner and stretchier like the miracle blanket? If you haven't tried the miracle blanket then it's definitely worth a shot, there is a thread on here about it and the miracles it works! It is much snugger than swaddling with a regular blanket.. Otherwise our daughter seemed to like the security of feeling a sleep positioner around her, there are a few on the market. We got one similar to this from JoJo Maman Bebe. edited to say that I'm sure this is obvious but sleep positioners are used to keep babies on their backs in their sleep in the early months! But also have the benefit of being snug.

Not meaning to split hairs but the other jabs aren't actually compulsory, it's always your decision what vaccinations your child has, as it should be.

I really like that mum's reply JDR, and having read it will probably go down the same route years from now when I have to come clean! -

Surely when we're weighing up what sort of birth we opt for we all really have the same thing in mind - and that's to try and secure the best possible start we can for our baby by being in the best possible shape we can hope to be post birth.. some of us hope to achieve that by being in a hospital setting and others by being at home. Sometimes our decision pays off and sometimes it doesn't so much. Having said that I know barely anyone who had the birth they 'planned', we all know that you can make all the plans in the world when it comes to your labour but sadly no-one has told the baby what the plan is! It's a hard enough process without feeling like it's a competition, that's for sure!

Obviously from recent reports it seems that elective c sections may become more easily accessible but they are not generally something one can choose new mother? do you mean by going privately? birth options aside, post partum care is this thing I would like to see more money channelled into edited to say I want to make it clear that I'm not judging anyone who does opt to have a baby privately! Just a bit hazy on what the options are if someone wants a c-section for personal reasons but without there being a specific medical reason etc

A house a few doors down from us has had snow spray on their windows since Nov 3rd... Co-op have had mince pies since October, discounting them already!

Sillywoman having been to your classes I can honestly say that I feel that the very last thing you did was to make any of us feel that way, you gave a very balanced and honest account of the potential pros and cons of home / hospital birth, including the potential risks, and you were very supportive about whatever kind of birth people were hoping for / ended up having, always being at pains to reassure us all that there was not a 'perfect birth' that we would have failed in some way if we didn't achieve, or that home birth or natural birth was in some way a 'superior achievement' to hospital birth, a birth with intervention, c-section etc.. Littlemoo, thank you for sharing your story on this thread, Im so sorry for you loss

If she is crying for that long and is not consolable could there be another problem like reflux or lactose intolerance that is causing her pain at night? I'm sure you've already thought of that but I think if she's crying for 9 or 10 hours at night then there could well be something causing her discomfort rather than it just being that she is not able to self settle?

How best to tell kids Father Xmas isn't real?
hellosailor replied to macaroni's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Genius isn't it! Sadly less genius was my mum giving us a carrier bag each to put our stocking presents in to take to bed with us at the end of the day rather than leaving them scattered all over the floor, and one fateful year not realising that at the bottom of my carrier bag was the receipt for said stocking presents...a very sad moment. I remember rushing into my twin brother's room brandishing the receipt as the terrible realisation hit me, and us rushing upstairs to confront mum, who was mortified...we had been so completely sold on her story, with no suspicions at all well beyond the age that our peers had ceased to believe, that she said she literally thought we would believe until we went to university. I have to say, I think she's right, I was no where near starting to doubt it, and though I can't remember our exact age, I do know we were at secondary school.:-$ -
How best to tell kids Father Xmas isn't real?
hellosailor replied to macaroni's topic in The Family Room Discussion
To get around the fact that some kids would tell us 'my mum/dad says father christmas isn't real..or ...'we've seen them putting our stockings out'...or...'mum admitted she does our stockings..' etc, our mum always told us that Father Christmas only went to houses that believed in him, and that those kids who were saying he didn't visit their house and that their parents filled their stockings were right, he didn't go to their houses, because why would he bother going to houses where the parents were doing stockings when he was so busy delivering to the kids who did believe in him and whose parents weren't going to be doing stockings etc. Worked like a charm, we believed for years after our friends did and were never alerted to the truth by friends who knew it wasn't true, as we just felt sorry for them for missing out on the real Father Christmas by having non-believing parents! (I'm a little embarrassed to admit!) -

Worse is when people say they're going to 'grab' a coffee, like their life is just sooooo high octane that they literally have to snatch a coffee while in mid run like they're having to grapple for a water bottle without losing valuable seconds like elite runners in the marathon...make my jaw set whenever I hear it -

Chener books near the EDT roundabout, a couple of doors up from Cafe Nero. Green Cuisine is on the opposite side of the road, a few doors up from the EDT pub -
