  1. Strawbs it happens most when the water is very hot as others have said, so helps to let it cool down in the kettle first. I use doctor browns and I don't shake the bottle when I add the formula, I stir it vigorously with a spoon for a few seconds instead.
  2. Yes Merry Christmas Family Roomers, knowing you lot are here, in the ether and in person, has made a big difference in my first year of motherhood, thank you all! xxx
  3. A Doll's house which you can add furniture / ornaments to each year? admittedly would come into it's own more in a few years but I had a doll's house which my mum would buy a few things for each year and I loved it. It had been her doll's house before it was mine.
  4. rafe is a smashing name. Much prefer rafe to ralph as a spelling and avoids the correcting people problem - keep working on your husband!
  5. That is fantastic news SW!, Congrats!
  6. You do need the cocoon when the baby is younger, it lasts for about 9 months depending on the size of the baby. After that you can either get the bugaboo branded footmuff or a lot of other brand footmuffs like buggy snuggles also fit perfectly well on the bee. You can buy a good condition cocoon on here or on eBay for about 25 or 30 quid.
  7. *snarf!*
  8. there is someone selling one in the family classifieds at the mo if anyone is looking for a second hand one..
  9. you get the arm flap, and you fold it round the arm like a shawl and then tuck the remaining material of the flap under the baby's back, and then do exactly the same on the other side, or at least, that's what we did! do you see what I mean or should I think of another way to explain it? there's a video clip of how to do it here
  10. When swaddling are you using a regular cellular blanket or something thinner and stretchier like the miracle blanket? If you haven't tried the miracle blanket then it's definitely worth a shot, there is a thread on here about it and the miracles it works! It is much snugger than swaddling with a regular blanket.. Otherwise our daughter seemed to like the security of feeling a sleep positioner around her, there are a few on the market. We got one similar to this from JoJo Maman Bebe. edited to say that I'm sure this is obvious but sleep positioners are used to keep babies on their backs in their sleep in the early months! But also have the benefit of being snug.
  11. Not meaning to split hairs but the other jabs aren't actually compulsory, it's always your decision what vaccinations your child has, as it should be.
  12. I really like that mum's reply JDR, and having read it will probably go down the same route years from now when I have to come clean!
  13. Surely when we're weighing up what sort of birth we opt for we all really have the same thing in mind - and that's to try and secure the best possible start we can for our baby by being in the best possible shape we can hope to be post birth.. some of us hope to achieve that by being in a hospital setting and others by being at home. Sometimes our decision pays off and sometimes it doesn't so much. Having said that I know barely anyone who had the birth they 'planned', we all know that you can make all the plans in the world when it comes to your labour but sadly no-one has told the baby what the plan is! It's a hard enough process without feeling like it's a competition, that's for sure!
  14. Obviously from recent reports it seems that elective c sections may become more easily accessible but they are not generally something one can choose new mother? do you mean by going privately? birth options aside, post partum care is this thing I would like to see more money channelled into edited to say I want to make it clear that I'm not judging anyone who does opt to have a baby privately! Just a bit hazy on what the options are if someone wants a c-section for personal reasons but without there being a specific medical reason etc
  15. A house a few doors down from us has had snow spray on their windows since Nov 3rd... Co-op have had mince pies since October, discounting them already!

Sillywoman having been to your classes I can honestly say that I feel that the very last thing you did was to make any of us feel that way, you gave a very balanced and honest account of the potential pros and cons of home / hospital birth, including the potential risks, and you were very supportive about whatever kind of birth people were hoping for / ended up having, always being at pains to reassure us all that there was not a 'perfect birth' that we would have failed in some way if we didn't achieve, or that home birth or natural birth was in some way a 'superior achievement' to hospital birth, a birth with intervention, c-section etc.. Littlemoo, thank you for sharing your story on this thread, Im so sorry for you loss
  21. If she is crying for that long and is not consolable could there be another problem like reflux or lactose intolerance that is causing her pain at night? I'm sure you've already thought of that but I think if she's crying for 9 or 10 hours at night then there could well be something causing her discomfort rather than it just being that she is not able to self settle?
