  1. Yeah, pledging allegiance to the monarchy I just what the disenfranchised need to make them feel needed. Perhaps they could arrange a weekly audience with the queen in Regents Park where the disaffected masses can gather to prostrate themselves before her. Nothing like some mass groveling to your oppressor to build community spirit.
  2. Fawlty Tower may not have been based on class but it was reliant on certain British stereotypes which, because of the nature of this country are intrinsically linked with class.
  3. Graham Chapman I think you will find and he was not the messiah he was a very naughty boy.
  4. Bloody hell MM. As if grappling with the rights and wrongs of Thatcher?s policies, the nature of class, the worldwide powers of the Catholic Church and where next to meet for drinks isn?t hard enough. A controversal and emotive subject, debate on which I think is going to lead to more grey areas than answers. My mind is a bit too fried with work stress at the moment to jump into the fray though.
  5. Which pub does Jenny Eclair work in?
  6. The Gowlett has the added bonus of making you feel like you have just stepped onto the set of Life on Mars.

You know what; I was there on Saturday and embarrassingly can?t remember any specific songs. :-S But I put that down to have being a bit intoxicated after being in pubs all day watching rugby. I can say that in the past Public Enemy, the Pixies and the Ramones are all bands that stick in my head that I have heard in on previous occasions,
  8. Especially when the catholic communities in most developed nations flatly ignore the church?s stance on birth control. Often at the advice of their priests. It all stinks of hypocrisy.
  9. Yesterday Mrs B and I were walking down LL. This girl walked past and I was convinced she was someone off telly or something as her face looked so familiar. Anyway I pondered over it as we continued our walk and it struck me, she was in fact one of the girls who tends bar in the Magdala. So from now on I shall consider all the people who tend bar in ED as local celebrities.
  10. Once again Michael P raises a poignant yet lesser known political issue. This time that of the unusually high incidence of alcoholism amongst Spanish lap dogs.
  11. I think you are right in saying a sense of belonging David. It is a very strong human need. We are pack animals after all and nobody likes to feel alienated.
  12. On the subject of beer prices. Is there anywhere apart from the Castle where you can still get a pint of Guinness for under 3 quid?

Or the point of it. I know what you mean BJL. Growing up in South Africa we were generally aware of the British class system (as about a 3rd of SA?s white population at least is essentially English) but I have never fully understood it. My family find it bemusing that my wife?s family who are from Manchester consider us terribly posh. My Father (who like many Afrikaners in the middle of last century came from dirt poor conditions with no social safety net) fought tooth and nail to educate himself and became a teacher and my mother (who was 1 of 3 kids raised by a single mother who worked as a teller in the post office) became a nurse. They live in a small house and drive a 10 year old car whereas the in-laws have 3 properties in 3 different countries, had their own business, retired early etc. I think it has more to do with some kind of tribalism than your actual economic situation.
  14. The comments about the music in inside 72 are heartening and go to prove my theory that most people actually like real music and not the fabricated crap that is piped out in most places. Now if only the proprietors of other places (and radio stations for that matter) would wake up and smell the coffee.
  15. Something I have rediscovered lately.

  17. Cor well will you look at that. Arnie may be his dad but given a bit of swing in the right conditions and Bob most certainly is his uncle.
  18. Maybe it had something to do with the helicopter last night.
