  1. Tell me about it! And I can't even get away with the P. O. E. part today.
  2. When venturing beyond the borders of our restful hamlet I often use this website www.fancyapint.com to identify good pubs to go to. They are generally on the money with their recommendations. So just out of curiosity I thought I would see what they have to say about the pubs in East Dulwich. To my horror I found out that there are no pubs in East Dulwich. The Vale, EDT, Bishop and Palmerston are in Peckham while the CPT, Clockhouse and Herne are in Nunhead and the Magdala is in Herne Hill of all places. As you can imagine this left me not a little distressed and I had to go and have a sit down and a cup of tea.
  3. Glad you said that James. I very nearly made a tit of myself by suggesting it was butter.
  4. You're right there. I hope they aren't going to dig everything up.
  5. I like Louisa, she's always calling people names.
  6. Fresh.
  7. 12 - Blood
  8. What always amuses me is the brief moment of confused panic that ensues when you stand aside for a lady on the bus. Once it sinks in though the gesture is usually received graciously.
  9. I filled out the form and asked for a tree. Hopefully it will not be anything man made and ?artistic?. Town planners and architects used to be able to design grand and tasteful decorative structures (like Peckham Rye Station) but one can only assuming that everyone who had this knowledge was killed in WW2 and the libraries bombed because since then bugger all worth looking at has been built.
  10. lol. >:D

  12. I'm actually more of a real ale or Guinness man myself but I've chosen my corner now so I have to stick to it.

(and dont let us get confusing BEER > with the chemical infused fizzy rubbish lager > either!) Yep. That's it. Thin fizzy and full of chemicals is how I like my BEER (that's what it is right?). Just like my women.
  14. It wasn't me. :-$
  15. Blimey the beer! How could I have left that off? This is the most important ingredient. In fact I strongly advise that nobody attempt to bbq without it. Having never done so myself I can?t say what might happen but I?m sure it will be horrible. If you like setting challenges for yourself you can play this little game. Brag to everyone about how good you are with the tongs and how lovely their meal is going to be. Then proceed to get smashed and try not to burn yourself and or the food and hold true to your boasts. Oh Louisa us colonials are learning how to roast meat. They introduced the electric oven to Africa in 2004 along with television and shoes.
  16. You can slow roast a bird or a leg on a bbq if you have one of those Webbers ones with the dome shaped lid. It is a skill that you need to master though and one I have not. What I love about bbqs is the fun involved, the fact that there is no precise environment with set parameters and times etc. each one is different and you have to apply you wits to the situation at hand. Most importantly though, you get to make a fire!>:D<
  17. I completely agree with you Louisa. This practice of bbqing over flames or coals that are too hot is heinous. People seem to do it in the UK and America. The only reason I can figure is that you have to cook as quickly as possible before it starts to rain again. To bbq properly a wood fire should be started early in the day and the burnt down and added to and then burnt down again to get a good steady bed of coals. The meat should be grilled slowly over the coals with due consideration for the different cooking times for the different meats. Mushrooms and potatoes etc can bee slow cooked in tinfoil in the coals. The Turks are good at this so are the Lebanese but in my completely biased opinion the art is honed to perfection in Southern Africa.

Am I right in assuming first generation immigrants who haven?t learnt how to do it properly yet? As someone who has been making fires and cooking animals on them since he could strike a match I must defend what is truly the most glorious way to eat.
  19. I think that the large number of disrespectful, antisocial bastards that bus drivers have to put up with is a major contributing factor to their surly, disgruntled nature. Since the last threads on this I have taken to saying good morning to the driver when I get on the bus in the mornings on LL hoping that this may make some small difference. Most of the time I just get a hostile look but I have got 1 or 2 smiles. No actual good morning back yet though. I do believe though that there is absolutely no excuse for dangerous driving.
  20. Mockney - I think in the case of American Irish it is more an identification with their own communities. Although there will always be a nostalgia for the "motherland" as people like to have a sense of heritage and history no matter what country they come from.
  21. It is realatively simple to build a bbq out of brick. They have 'em in the park in my home town in South Africa. The grills go missing though but you just bring your own grill along. I spent many a teenage evening sitting around a bbq/fire in the park. Well until the police would wade in remonstrating about underage drinking etc. Oh the memories.
  22. Don't they?
  23. My mother is Irish but I grew up in South Africa. Any other plastic paddys out there? Come join me for a drink tonight. I?ll be at the bar in the Castle wearing one of those oversized Guinness hats, drinking green beer and singing Pete St. John songs out of key. ;-) Jokes aside. As a relative new comer to ED am I correct in assuming that it has historically had an Irish population? I have assumed so because of St Thomas Moore Hall, the Irish shop, Irish Festival etc.
  24. I think the angle of this TV guy/girl is the unfair issuing of tickets, and the bulling tactics of these private extortion rackets and the local councils to force people to pay without due opportunity to appeal. This does happen. A lot.
  25. Sometimes playful tongue-in-cheekedness is also lost in the written word.
