M&S on Lordship Lane

Oh, out of confinement for a while and the old stirrings are starting to rise to the surface!

Crouch End (the East Dulwich of the North!) has an M&S and a Waitrose. So does Charlton / Eltham.

I don't understand why is there always at least one poster who makes unnecessary and rude comments. It happens on nearly all the threads. It's so frustrating! Most of the time it leads to a deterioration of the whole thread. Before that everyone else was making their comments and contributions about their opinions and experiences; no harm, no waste of data or memory on my laptop. Then suddenly the attack begins with a frustrated 'FFS'. I don't recall an opinion being expressed in the message; but there were a number of questions so just to answer... There are plenty of people that care about where you shop and what you eat! It's scary how much our habits are being tracked! There are all kinds of businesses that have and still are creating technologies to obtain that kind of data (from forums, credit cards, loyalty cards, web searches etc) and receive a great deal of money to do so.

LM Crouch End has bigger retail units, and more of them too. Eltham and Charlton (despite arguably, being less affluent), also have much more space to accommodate these big chains. Let us not forget, Clapham has an Iceland next door to a Little Waitrose. Come on, people got their upmarket supermarket, let us now have a Lidl to replace Co-op.

Beckenham was Cool in the 70's.. The Three Tuns.. where David Bowie used to drink and a few bikers too.

There was The George ..

.. and there was a tiny pub behind where Sainbury's is now.. that did not sell spirits.. Just beer and and wine ??

Beckenham High Street now is filled with charity shops.. so like Lordship Lane it would seem essential to qualify as being posh.

Was a regular destination spot for me at the time... 70's

Jeremy, I know it pains the ED hoi polloi to have to admit that Beckenham has had a Waitrose and M&S for years, many many of them. Along with a sainsburys and a lidl, a Foxtons, Nandos.. I could go on. It's attracted wealthy people for decades. Some neighbourhoods want to have it, some had it and lost it, others have always had it aka Beckenham.

Foxy, IKEA and IDEA sound very different. I don't think you'll be making it into the top 100 Cockney rhyming slang terms anytime soon with that one. I'd personally have said 'pint of beer', or even just 'pint'. Sorry I'm not at all with it today, the new M&S opening has knocked me for six. To be honest, im not sure whether I'm coming or going anymore.

Personally, I've tried all of them. I would say the Marks version is head and shoulder the best, but lidl really isn't far behind (and basically half the price).

I am disappointed Marks isn't displaying it's wine by country.

Louisa, the wines in each section are mixed so we have to search - remember the old adage - You get what you pay for?

We have an expectation of M&S to exceed expectations that became stultified at the Coop. The all grain low GI bread in Lidl is good - as are their panini. And croissants, if they are fresh out and not been sweating there for hours.

Last evening in M&S at 6.15, I just wanted carrots, celery and chocolate ginger biscuits : the fresh veg and salad section was practically empty, and no biscuits.

And no wonderful figs.

Iam pleased for you that you are out laying ghosts, and toasting them later no doubt.

I have not been to the L.L. M&S Store but they are all themed and very much the same.

My mum was a fan and I used to take her to the M&S Food Hall at Blue Water and she used to use the one in Bromley.

I've used the one in Richmond but M&S Simply Food does not offer anything that I cannot get cheaper elsewhere.

I'm not one who believes that paying a premium will get you the best produce.

I do shop at M&S for clothes.

Their staff are well trained, smartly dressed, and provide excellent customer service.. Possibly on par with John Lewis.
