Just wondered what people think about this. I was out with a friend this evening to celebrate my birthday. We had just left a posh restaurant in Mayfair and as we exited into the street a man just pulled down his trousers and exposed himself then just walked off. We were so startled and didn't have time to react but have both been so sngry all the way home about it. If there is time to act what is the right way to deal with this sort of behaviour on a busy street?

Ok it's the behaviour of a flasher and while that's something people like to mock, it has a mental health problem underlying it. What I would say Cella, is that the impact on YOU is the measure of the offence. People who expose themselves, get gratification from the shock they cause/ the attention they attract. That is why some people choose to laugh at and ridicule flashers. But ultimately what you are dealing with is a fetish. It's not a nice fetish, because it involves unwilling participants, but most flashers are just that, people with a cognitive wiring that seeks gratification from exposure.

My advice would be to report it to Police (with a description of the male), not because it is a criminal offence (which it is), but because there is someone out there that may need psychiatric help, for their own safety as much as anyone else.

Thanks for the responses all. Retrospectively various possible courses of action occurred to us though at the time it all happened so speedily that we didn't have the time to do anything. We fully appreciate that some people have mental health issues that cause unfortunate behaviour but we don't think that was the case here as he was more interested in shock value and disappeared quickly with a grin on his face. It's still unacceptable and we have hopefully evolved enough to think that men exposing their genitals to women is archaic behaviour. It can also possibly lead to other sexual crimes so absolutely no truck with it. It's worrying to think that these men may have women in their lives and how they would react if other men behaved in this way to them. Anyway we've moved on and are enjoying the weekend.

    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
    • Well apolitical if that is an OK word for you.  Sorry if my choice of words was incorrect.  But on my original point if it wasn't for the Telegraph dragging this up, and yes they do have an agenda, an no they are not apolitical/impartial whatever, we;d be none the wiser. But as it made no difference to Trump's election campaign that why would he have a case in the American courts? Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the programme
