MrBen
Anyone know how many episodes are in season 2?On my Virgin on demand I only have 8 for that season (the only one they feature) but episode 8 doesn't really conclude anything - or perhaps thats the point? MrBen
Thanks Mockney. Damn the programming exec at Virgin who decided to post the first 8 of Season 2 onto On Demand and nothing else...I can almost sense your horror but this oddity means that I have also yet to actually see series 1 (DVD arrived today from Amazon) and I have some serious catch up to do.As always I'm way behind the curve.....hell in 2011 I might even buy an i Phone! AllyCat
Just thought you Wire fans (of which I am becoming one!) might like to know I was at the Baftas last night and met both McNulty and Bubbs - and what a lovely pair they are - very friendly! They were most amused to hear about our forum discussions! They made me do that "Westside" hand thing! mightyroar
that's very cool. although was it odd to hear mcnulty speak without a Baltimore voice?Anyway, you know how in the wire, when they are on the corners selling the package, often in the background you can hear them shouting the name of it?.........well one name that they shout in at least 2 episodes is 'pandemic'which is all I can think at the moment when they say it on the news.is this just me? Gerrard
Ok, this is probably the worst place to post this comment, please excuse what follows... I bought the first series on dvd after the Beeb's seemingly daft decision to put it on so late in the evening.I think, at a push, I understood 25% of the dialogue.. The plot seemed rather straightforward. Its obviously gloomy (but we were expecting that). It didnt really grab me at all, probably because of the dialogue problem... do you just begin to understand the Baltimore voices after a while? Do they ever finish a sentence without swearing at each other? We were left so disappointed that we havent brought ourselves to watch episode 2. A friend of ours said it takes at least five episodes to start to understand some of the characters. Is this right? Is this a common theme for Wire virgins, the difficult beginning? I enjoyed New Jack City etc. but this is really heavy going. SeanMacGabhann
It's pretty much the most regurgitated line by Wire fans Gerrard - have a look at the first post on this thread - it pre-empts just such a statement Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1290-the-wire/page/20/#findComment-196569 Share on other sites
Floating Onion
My better half had some real trouble with the accents & dialogue. Very unimpressed after episode 1. We went back & started watching it with subtitles. Now she quite enjoys & is starting to understand it. Perhaps try that? And yes, it does take a few to get into it. giggirl
I confess I always watch The Wire with subtitles. Otherwise I would have no hope of understanding the plot; it's just too street for me. Omar rather unexpectedly got naked on me last night (series 4). Mazel Tov. silverfox
I was drawn to this out of curiosity when I read it was President Obama's favourite programme. I struggled at first with all the crack-head chic and nilhilism but have to confess I'm now a convert. Looking forward to the creator's new series Treme as well. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/5358857/The-Wire-creator-David-Simon-to-make-Hurricane-Katrina-drama.html Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1290-the-wire/page/20/#findComment-204041 Share on other sites
bon3yard
Its worth buying/hiring Generation Kill also. If you think some of the dialogue in The Wire was wilfully obscure then you might need to get yerself a Babel Fish for this excellent mini-series.
