I noticed a recent thread regarding squirrel meat being sold in ED.

Certain companies have been accused of cashing in on wildlife massacre by selling squirrel meat. The needless cull by 'so called' conservation groups to boost population of red squirrels is irrational, inhumane & destined to fail, so it is very sad that companies are allowing profit to be made from wildlife massacre.

Viva! say that across the UK, the animals are being killed using barbaric, but legal methods, including being clubbed to death & poisoned with warfarin, which causes them to bleed to death over several days (which is why I'm against killing rats by the same method.)

If these companies continue to sell squirrel meat, the only message they are giving out, is that they are happy to have the blood of a beautiful wild animal on their hands, for the sake of a few quid.

Something to think about when visiting a restaurant/eating establishment.

For more info, visit www.viva.org.uk

Are people poisoning squirrels then to sell on as food? Just from a scientific point of view, I'm wondering if that isn't counter-productive - can humans eat poisoned meat and be ok?

Equally, is clubbed squirrel really in a state to be served up on a menu? Maybe in a stew...

I'm not saying either of these things are the case, just wondering. I'm quite happy to eat meat, and consequently squirrel meat too - although I prefer my meat to come form animals reared and slaughtered humanely.

Well I guess a website promoting veganism would be against eating squirrel.

Will you also be mounting a spirited defence of the yewman rights of the 'umble cockroach? B)

I can't see the point of saying no to squirrel without saying no to all other types of meat. Do we say no to rabbit too? And chicken? and...oh wait I guess we do if we are vegetarian, which is fine. But I'm no vegetarian and don't see why I would say no to anything as long as it is humanely reared and slaughtered.

I am not trying to 'scaremonger' anybody, just trying to make people aware of facts that they may not already know. I saw the thread about squirrel meat and am giving my own opinion, based on info received from the 'viva' website. One of the companies they mention are Budgens, who are apparently selling it in one of their supermarkets in north london.

Yes, I am vegetarian, and don't agree with killing anything.

I also know that a lot of people don't actually realise, or stop and think about how some animals are killed. I think if more people were educated in this, there would be more vegetarians, more respect for animals and less animal cruelty.

Jeezus H...

No outlet who puts this on the menu will sell meat that has been poisoned

I mean, do you see the following...

Marsh Lamb

Line caught sea bass

Free range Chicken/ Beef

Squirrel ( poisoned with warfren )

No of course not, you're an Idiot if you think that

Actually you are an Idiot, whatever

What next hmmm, a placard protest on LSL

"Don't eat pretty animal, only smelly & ugly ones "

W**F

Frankly I'm up for eating as many as the little buggars as possible. They eat my broad beans, my sweet corn, and my strawberries on my allotment as well as my plums at home. They are wasteful too...starting on one fruit with one bite before moving on to the next for another bite and so on. Little bastards!

Every year, just before our walnuts look ready, a small army of grey squirrels runs in and strips the tree over a couple of days. They do not leave us one nut and I take this quite personally.

Last year I managed to shoot one, so we ate it, tasty but you need more than one to make it worth the effort. They still got the walnuts. This year I intend to go Rambo on their asses.

You counted your pears? LOL!

You are right about the shotgun thing though - I've been tempted.

I did try squirrel at Franklins a few months back. I remember it well because of the disgust on my hubby's and surrounding customers' faces upon ordering. I did ask Franklins whether the squirrels on their menu were local as the idea of getting my own back and potentially eating one who had gorged himself on my sweetcorn appealed enormously. Unfortunately I was informed they came from York. Didn't detract from the taste though - rather enjoyed it in a sick kind of way LOL! Needless to say, hubby was appalled!

Yes Ladymuck I counted the pears. I was very excited as we've had the tree four years and this was the first year it flowered. 21 budding Comices there were - I felt like a proud father until ... the squirrels ...

We even netted the tree after we lost the first 10 or so only to see the squirrels acrobatically swing upside down on the netting while chomping the pears

    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
    • Nothing to do with the topic of this thread, but I have to say, I think it is quite untrue that people don't make human contact in cities. Just locally, there are street parties, road WhatsApp groups, one street I know near here hires a coach and everyone in the street goes to the seaside every year! There are lots of neighbourhood groups on Facebook, where people look out for each other and help each other. In my experience people chat to strangers on public transport, in shops, waiting in queues etc. To the best of my knowledge the forum does not need donations to keep it going. It contains paid ads, which hopefully helps Joe,  the very excellent admin,  to keep it up and running. And as for a house being broken into, that could happen anywhere. I knew a village in Devon where a whole row of houses was burgled one night in the eighties. Sorry to continue the off topic conversation when the poor OP was just trying to find out who was open for lunch on Christmas Day!
    • We went to Chern Thai for lunch on Saturday, as we have done quite often, and they were closed, with no sign of life. The sign in the window still says Saturday 12-3, and there was no indication that they would be closed. Can anybody shed any light? We went to Chilli and Garlic on Zenoria Street instead. Their falafel salad bowl is amazing (and amazing value!) but we had been looking forward to a Pad Thai and a pint of Singha! ETA: I am reviving this thread because it is/was  specifically about Chern Thai's opening times!
