Being rude is just the Paris thing :)

We've had anecdotal evidence and no real proof that it's pandemic across the board. I've visited Mem's elsewhere where they've been perfectly fine and I'm not exactly an alpha male.

It's another one of those daft EDF threads that goes off on a tangent which turns into yet another xenophobic rant over nothing. At least in The Lounge, the banality can continue.

If the OP has a genuine issue with the business, he should complain to the owner directly.

Lounge it yea (because closing down the conversation is always a "solution")

This thread reminds me of this comment

"Liberals & socialists want to shutdown Trump they're acting like he is going to kill gays, make slavery legal again and take away women's rights...

Like he's a Muslim or something.."

It's a mad world .. offensive on so many levels ..

I did this and haven't heard back. However I also wanted to warn others of what happened and get feedback as to how to take things forward, hence this post.

I too am confused by the way this thread went, mind. I'm amazed by how rude, hateful and argumentative people are online. I'm sure these same people would never speak to each other this way in real life.

Lounging it doesn't close down the conversation. Just moves it to a different area of the forum.

And on that note I shall move this to the Lounge.

There is an excellent BBC Seriously podcast entitled No Platform http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04gsbgy (or look up Seriously on your podcast app). There is an especially interesting bit about 40 mins in about vindictive protectionism, where some people have the attitude that "I'm on the side of the virtuous but can't generally let out my dark side therefore I'm going to look out for someone who's not and lay into them, because I can, especially on line" and also people who look out for things to be offended by, almost a competitive virtuousness.

Yes that's true I stand corrected.

Excellent Thank You

Nah, That's Pence - don't any of you touch Trump :)

Swimming slightly against the tide this morning I popped into Mems for a trim. The chaps seemed to be having a row about whether to use bleach on the back step or not but I couldn't detect any casual racism or homophobia and they are eight quid cheaper than next door

  • 1 month later...

Went to Mems Barbers today..

There were two barbers working today...

There was no loud conversation between them but much polite conversation between the barbers and their customers.

My barber was new. (been there 3 weeks) but I believe he had come from one of their other 3 shops.

He was from Algeria and a very pleasant soft spoken fella. He spent 20-25 mins on my hair with close attention to detail.

I got a great haircut to my requirements and was charged ?8.00. Usual cost for a scissor cut ?14.00.

But I'm of that certain age. Gave him a Tenner and he was happy..

Maybe there have been changes (due to complaints) ??? but I can only give praise to this place.

Nice comfortable leather sofas. TV with sound turned down/off.

Would personally recommend Mems..

1. Complain to the place. They may have thought it harmless. You and most people think otherwise. By getting feedback they will learn and change. You did complain. Good stuff. There are times that I didn't and regret it.

2. Limit your details (bit late) as this makes people, including me, make facetious comments

3. Understand that whilst we have moved on, this is still seen as 'banter' by many who don't even think that they are being offensive. Just take a few black cab rides and drivers often make assumptions that you will agree with their rabid views (not all cabbies have rabid views by the way).

I shudder when looking back on what I thought funny 30 years ago (again not supposed to be offensive)

I shudder looking at some of what was considered progressive comedy from the 80s.

I shudder at the 'lads culture' from the 90s promulgated by bands such as Oasis (literally get your tits out for the lads)

I shudder at the thought of what Brexit will lead to in terms of equality etc and that rrrrrss over the pond

I'm proud of the positive changes that I have seen in my lifetime, and hope the point above doesn't materialise. We are all better than that. Let's finish on a positive note!

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
    • Depends on what the Barista says doesnt it? There was no physical confrontation with the driver, OP thinks she is being targetted when she isnt. These guys work min wage under strict schedules so give them a break unless they damage your stuff
    • CPR Dave, attendance records are available on Southwark's website. Maggie Browning has attended 100% of meetings. Jon Hartley has attended 65%.
