Has posting on this forum hindered your employment prospects?

Recommended Posts

Last night, after reading through some of the threads, it occured to me that some people invest quite alot of time on this forum, especially during working hours. Has this ever been mentioned at an annual performance appraisal?

So, as a consequence of this distraction, would you say that your professional progress may have suffered as a result of posting on the East Dulwich Forum, aswell as other message boards accessible at work?

As ever, I look forward to your response.

I'm a loafer-at-home (like many on here) with no boss to grovel to as such; but for me, posting on here is a symptom rather than a cause. If it wasn't this then it would doubtless be something else.

I'm lazy, easily distracted and lack focus. I expect I could double my earnings by fixing these things, but to be honest, I enjoy being lazy, distracted and lacking focus - which I guess means I can't be that bothered about the money either.

This forum and other forums has totally destroyed my career, I am millions of pounds worse-off and would definitely have been a Captain of industry by now if it wasn't for reading what's what on internet forums.

What a sheer waste of opportunity.

Interesting reading though (sometimes).

Ha ha. Yes, very good. I'm sure you've all had a good laugh. And perhaps the general self employed, freelance rule sets the trend in terms of where the EDF pulls its talent.

But is this humour distracting us from a more important question? Some of you will work in a contract position and have children. And surely, if you spent more time focused on your job and improving your chances of promotion than mooching about on here, then you'd be doing more to ensure and maintain a stable environment for them. What if, as a result of your constant presence on here, you lost your job? And in the process, put the stable environment your dependents rely on you to provide, at risk?

You certainly wouldn't be laughing then, would you.

It hasn't effected them so far, is what I'm getting from the answers. How about you, DJKillaQueen?

Oh, and to answer Jah Lush's question. I can certainly multi-task. But my job demands my presence all-over the place. And as a result, I'm away from my desk alot.

Nope...doesn't affect me at all. And most employers that object to use of forums at work have them blocked. It's very rare that something like a forum comment or noticeboard or twitter etc loses someone their job anyway.....and only if they post something so controversial or personal that it undermines their job or their relationship with their employer (so, true of politicians and public figures for example).

I would give myself a professional appraisal

Only I'm too busy ( fill in as appropriate ) & posting on here

See I run my own show

"No CJ"

"Very well CJ"

    • That’s interesting, Dulwich Dweller; my 70 yr old neighbour told me 2 weeks ago that he’d left work early to go and book in person (being uncomfortable with all the online & app stuff) and was explicitly told that he needed to go away and book online. He’s not the sort of person to be insistent and, like a lot of older people, a bit embarrassed at his lack of digital ability, so he left without the appointment . This is my point about inconsistency, since his experience was quite different from yours. I’m beginning think that it rather depends on who, at Reception, you speak to on day…
    • Wow, never had a disappointing meal there since they opened.. guess like every establishment, depends on the chef.. All for allowing an off day - good of you to post.. much better than chains - had awful service at Gail’s for eg..be it cake and tea or a meal.. They are so nice and accommodating..
    • "I tried Viet Flavour and was disappointed.  Their summer rolls especially were not at all good, stodgy and flavourless.  Pho-OK.  I'm hoping it will get better " Back in June I posted as above.  I am glad to report that either the first time I went the restaurant was having an off day, or they have upped their game.  I ordered the same things.  The summer roll was exactly as it should be, and had a lovely dipping sauce. The Pho was delicious.  My brother who was with me wanted to give it 10/10 but I always think you should leave room for improvement so gave it 9/10.  Staff were lovely.  I am so glad because I love Vietnamese food and now think I have a very good one just round the corner.
    • So do I, and I started it!!!  I have changed title.
