That's Underhill Road (between Crystal Palace and Barry)... And yes it is a great fish & Chip shop!

I've never been disappointed by the sea-cow. I used to live just over the from Emma's and the owner IS very friendly (used to wave at me every time I walked past) and DOES serve big portions, AND it is cheap, but I'm afraid the quality is just far better at sea-cow so I haven't been to Emma's for a long time now.


I might have more opportunity if the Uplands itself hadn't gone so downhill since it changed ownership a couple of years ago. I remember the time when that was the nicest pub in East Dulwich, is now languishing down the bottom of the list somewhere!

I've been to the Seacow once and never again. ?6:00 for fish n chips in a fancy box in a fancy carrier bag a total ripoff!!!

Bit like some of the Christmas presents one buys, you pay for the wrapping the goods are rubbish....thanks for the tips on the other chippy's.....i can smell them now just talking about it :-)

The Seagull Fish Bar, very friendly staff and as you say the fish is freshly cooked.

quality is definitely the sea cow. except for the red snapper. i sent it back once because it was like an old boot and there was no fuss made at all.


emilys is good for massive serves that is for sure and the staff are really good. we only just noticed the codfather yesterday on a post-ny-hangover-from-hell walk through goose green. we are going to give it go just on the basis of a genius name!

Does anyone bother to think why Sea Cow might be more expensive than your average chippie or do people really just look at the price of everything and judge accordingly??


You still might favour the food in other chippies and the Sea Cow isn't perfect but having bigger premises, an alcohol license, the range of fish, a commitment to fish stocks etc surely counts for something? WHo knows, maybe the staff get paid a little bit more as well...


(Not that I ever go in there as I don't do seafood - have tried the chips and loved them mind)

There's a lot of seafood allergy in my [irish] wife's family. Not on the rise is it? What was that famous fish and chip shop in Dublin that was started by a cabin boy who survived the Titanic sinking?


Stick to haddock rolled in oatmeal, as any scot will tell you.

Why do I not do seafood? No allergy, just last remaining hurdle. My diet to the age of 20 or so was....beyond one-dimensional. No meat, no veg, no fruit (pretty much)


No even sure why - I just didn't see the point. Now it's the complete opposite but fish remains an anomaly. I have dabbled in the last year and am working towards it (a fellow forumite even managed to get me to try eel at Buddah Jazz... but then it had chili all over it so that was easy)

I think Emily's is great but be prepared to wait because he always insists on frying fresh fish. The Codfather changed hands recently and the chip quality and portion size have gone down. It was a good kebab/basic fish and chip shop but is branching out a bit too much into other things. Keep it simple I say.


Best kebab now is Sam's on corner of Oglander/Bellenden Roads, but chips not much cop.


A propos of nothing, last time I went to Prenton/Tranmere on the Wirral I went into a kebab shop where the owner used to work in a kebab shop in Lordship Lane. How spooky is that?

    • Really don’t  know why people don’t sell their property by them selves…or at least start that way… not difficult if a freehold house, might be  more complicated if leasehold flat but with a good solicitor doing his work, should be fine. With many people using internet, plenty of people put  looking and numerous  other ways to reach target audience. Was a relocation agent for  years both in sales and letting through London and home  counties.. ie acquiring properties for individuals. Same goes for rental/ letting agents.. tenancy agreements are standard, totally agree that various laws governing terms  are updated but nowadays the majority of estate agents in letting and I assume sales  belong to a recognised body so really one can let oneself. Tenancies are free on line or can be purchased for a nominal sum. What do they do for their commission in both instances? Introduce tenant or buyer, in theory check out references and produce a tenancy agreement, agree amendments, sign by both parties, collect deposit and rent. Organise inventory check in and that is it. And then if you decide to pay them for management of property an additional fee in the hope that they will use approve contractors for all repairs in a suitable time frame for tenant. Was a post earlier or towards last year not sure on here or Facebook covering this point and lack of management from agent for months. I hasten to add that not all sales or rental agents behave in this manner but certainly some in good old ED. was definitely a posting about a well known agent in the village who was “slow” concerning the above. From memory, change if staff and just got buried…in my book totally unacceptable excuse. That is why they have managers in each estate agent to overseas and stay abreast of sales and lettings. Can’t pass the buck…and most companies irrespective of type of industry have a leaving policy and hand over policy produced normally by HR..Same could be said for consultants in  new build sales but normally they are  responsible and accountable from start to finish ie monitoring sale  the whole way, have to produce weekly reports to head office  plus  follow up on all enquiries. Been their as well over my career.
