macroban
East Dulwich is part of Camberwell, but Camberwell is not East Dulwich. There ought to be a history class for incomers. Michael Palaeologus
East Dulwich part of Camberwell - are you quite mad? I spent good money getting out of Camberwell into ED.Perhaps The Grove could be known as being in "Eastish Dulwich"? Maurice
Exactly. I want my cake etc. Can those of us in The Grove join adopt your ED brand, erect walls along the south side of Camberwell Church Street and Denmark Hill (okay give 'em the shops and Butterfly monster), and leave Camberwell to the growing lot of people hell bent on destroying what is left. They can join forces with central Peckham. Maurice
It's a dump. Just go stand at the main intersection at 5.30pm tonight. Wear something waterproofed as you might get pissed on. Alan Dale
So you mean the 'vulnerable adults' who spend their days scallying about drinking strong cider and swapping prescription drugs?Totally agree. They should be rounded up and forcibly helped.Care in the community is a myth. Giving people the freedom to drink and drug abuse themselves to death is not care.We could do with some of that East Dulwich NIMBYism that won't even tolerate a late night pharmacy- let alone roaming hordes of filthy layabouts. Maurice
Yep that lot plus the hoards of rude people who push, shout, toss litter, blast music from mobiles, ah the list continues.I've been here a long time. Too long. It is getting so much worse. Alan Dale
Tramps and mad-heads are intolerable and litter is a problem everywhere but shouting and listening to music?!You sound even softer than I imagined. You need to move somewhere rural not ED. Michael Palaeologus
Macroban - we should learn from history but not be ruled by it. East Dulwich may have been in Camberwell just as India was in the British Empire. Both ED and India have moved onto new and independent pastures. macroban
Someone else - downsouth - told me my geography was lacking, but I'm under the impression that East Dulwich remains in the same place. Maurice
Sorry - hop aboard the 36 or 436 and music blarring from 14 mobile phones is a bit much. No I don't mind a bit of urban noise, take Lordship Lane, but strink drinking idiots shouting horrendous hate-filled things is something else. And the rudeness of people. Shoving, pushing and all 'round nasty. The Grove deserves a Lordship. Not a third-world, gum encrusted, litter filled, take-your-life-in-your-own-hands through road. Luckily we have the Camberwell Forum back on the case again. Boy have they been a huge force for the better! downsouth
Without trying to sound coarse, it's up to local politicians to deal with such things. If you vote some shades of the political spectrum you then get the resulting social experiments. Compassion is good but there is a balance between state responsibility and that of the individual. Maurice
Er Camberwell's shade is not as far left as Dulwich, though the whole Borough is run by Lib Dems. Maurice
Sorry. Thought you all were Lib Dems. Richard Thomas not one of yours? Are you Conservatives? We're Labour. But the Borough is Lib Dem/Conservative so we're out of the loop regardless. downsouth
In the whole of Dulwich (Village, East and West) six of the nine coucillors are blue.http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/267/slide1zu7.th.jpgLambeth (left) Southwark (right) The blue numbers are 21 Village, 5 College, 19 Thurlow Park and 7 Gipsy Hill wards. The yellow 6 is East Dulwich ward. Maurice
Ah then that explains why things are improving I suppose. I had such high hopes for new labour. Now I think we need an era of tough love ala the blue brigade. Meanwhile back in Camberwell we're blaming ourselves for the behaviour of idiots instead of blaming them. Alan Dale
Whilst I think care in the community doesn't work I don't think that the 'vulnerable adults' are to blame.Similarly for people addicted to prescription drugs whilst I feel they need stern guidance I don't think they need to be blamed. As for loud mp3 players and noisy streets then I don't feel there is any blame to attribute. *Bob*
Surely the 'issue' with music on mobile phones is the dreadful scratchy sound quality. In my day, if you wanted to treat/inflict your music on the general public in shared public spaces, you at least had the decency to make sure they could hear it properly. If it didn't need at least 4 Ever Ready PP9's to power-up, it ought not to be seen out of the house. Maurice
There's a fine line between blame and holding people responsible. I'll concede it's the latter and we struggle with it in Camberwell. We bear the brunt of all the worst things confronting the Borough and sit and watch everywhere else get truckloads of cash. We did get that new toilet though.Back on point. The Grove is distinct from the mayhem of Camberwell proper. I think we belong in Dulwich East. Alan you can stay in Camberwell and dish out tough love. I should recommend a bullet proof vest.Bob. I still have an 8 track. And a Bose state of the art too. Alan Dale
The only places where you get this 'mayhem' are around the Green and outside Nandos and even then it's just unpleasant on the eye. You aren't in danger in either place. You can't claim that Camberwell Grove is notably different to Love Walk, Grove Lane or even sleepy little Selborne Village (estate agent name for my bit) in terms of 'mayhem'. Camberwell is generally a nice place but there are a couple of shit bits. It's a familiar tale.
