Hi I moved to ED from West London and absolutely loving it. What I do miss is though a good old school boozer have been to the EDT, Bishop etc but are there any good 'proper' pubs round here?

Also what are the other interesting areas to visit and is the farmers market in Peckham on a Sunday any good?

Wuld be great to get some suggestions of what to do round here!!

Cheers

Hi and welcome,

What do you mean by good proper pub?

Sawdust on floor? Everyone smoking themselves - and anyone nearby passively-so - to death?

Appalling beer from just one brewery?

The ladies drinking their half ciders out the back room with the kids in their prams?

Do proper pubs not have televisions?

Yeah - what dya mean by good proper pub?

Just wonderin' like. :)

Welcome to the area TommyT. There are about a trillion pub related discussions which should answer most of your questions.

Like PR, I'm not sure of your definition of a good old fashioned boozer, but at a pinch and depending on that definition, you could try the CPT or The Castle on Crystal Palace road, the Crown & Greyhound (aka the Dog) or a host of pubs a bit further afield in camberwell, pekcham (pronounced pay-sharm), nunhead or forest hill directions.

Also Hoopers on Ivanhoe road is good for proper beer.

Good proper pub = CPT - Crystal Palace Tavern, or the Gowlett or The Clock House - there will be many other recommendations no doubt.

We are also but a short train ride fom London Bridge, where there are many nice pubs and Borough Market on a Friday and Saturday, the Daddy of all such markets.

Welcome!

Welcome to the area Tommy. I second what has been said about the Crystal Palace Tavern (CPT). It?s a top pub! It is over here:

The Castle is also what one would call an ?old school boozer? but a bit more shall we say, rough around the edges. It is up the road. Expect the locals (which include a few vaguely humanoid beings and a couple of dogs) to stop their conversations and turn to look at you when you walk in.

But that's just them being friendly! Isn't it nicer to be noticed and welcomed in the local dialect ("Who the f**k are you???) rather than ignored?

    • Would downstairs at  the EDT work? It is very noisy at weekends, but  quiet on some weekdays (though sometimes there are mum and baby gatherings!), the back room is nice and the food is ok and reasonably priced. I'm not sure about disabled toilets, you would need to check that out, but there are men's and women's toilets on the ground floor. Or The Palmerston or The Lordship, though I think their food is more expensive and the space isn't so nice as the EDT (in my opinion). I'm assuming in each place you can just have tea, coffee or soft drinks. You would have to ask about the specific food requirements, but surely these days most if not all places serving meals cater for things like vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free/dairy free needs?  Or, Franco Manca (pizzas) do vegan aka dairy free  cheese options I think (one of my grandchildren is dairy free, but I can't now remember if we had to take our own cheese in for her when she was little - a long time ago! Haven't eaten there for years, so I don't know what it's like now). Or, can't remember if it has been mentioned already, but possibly the Italian place near the bus stop - Due Fratelli??  - though it's not particularly cheap, there aren't a lot of vegetarian options in the pasta range (though the ravioli was tasty) and I can't remember if the toilets are on the ground floor or downstairs, or if there is a disabled toilet.
