contentious point, nero, and it will perhaps stun english readers to discover the long standing divides that still encumber scottish life.

but i always thought that scoti was the latin word for 'small men' and is generally thought to have been the doric folk of the north east [of scotland] while the picts were the inhabitants of dalriada, noted for painting their skin, which was basically starthclyde and the inner islands.

and the gealtachd? teuchters, the lot of them...

but as we all know, the nation was united once and for all by ally mcleod and andy cameron in the summer of 1978, into the 'famous tartan army'[ or les betes en tartan, depending...] who will celebrate wildly with anyone, win lose or draw.

Scoti was the Roman word used to describe raiders from Ireland who settled on the West Coast of what is now Scotland while Pict was Roman for ?painted? people. The Picts lived generally in the East and North East (I think). Interestingly so little survives of the Pictish language that there is some dispute as to whether it was, what we now call Celtic, at all. Although the general consensus is that it was Celtic but of the same family as Welsh and Cornish rather than that of Scots Gaelic.

I guess we need to decide a venue -EDT is currently in the lead but perhaps some of you CPT regulars could put a word in and ask if they would show it? I guess the big screen is better in the EDT?

I will be quite distraught if the CPT are planning on showing the Russia vs Israel game which kicks off an hour after the Scotland match!

As for Allys Army of '78 I can confirm the Tartan Army are back in force having recently had the good fortune of a last minute tour of duty in Paris. The goal was a moment I shall never forget. Followed by total pandemonium and me ending up with my kilt over my head.

We are up against it facing the mighty Italians (who only need a draw) but what a campaign. We can walk away proud regardless of the result. It has been a joy to watch this team.

The Irish game is on before and I think the Castle would actually be a very appropriate venue for both these games

Snorky is tartan army he has to admit - most recently in Bari for Italy game in March ( via Serbia/ Montenegro/ Albania/ Montenegro by train for the trip).Snorky was even in the Baltics for the game that never was double header in '96 ish. Also in Srade de france Paris for Brazil in '98.I think we lost.

International footy leaves me cold, doesn't excite me like league football at all, but I think the Scots have a chance to qualify, at least their fate is in their hand unlike England ( surprise, surprise) who have to rely on other results giong their way no matter what the outcome of their games.

On a completely different note, I'm getting very tired of the sad and lame excuse that some managers seem to trot out regarding the lack of english players in premiership sides. The problem doesn't lie with foreign coaches or managers but with the way football is taught at grass root levels to children. I have had many years experience of managing/assisting junior football teams and despair of our game. Every week its the same thing. Managers and coaches persist with the " get the ball up to the big lad up front" bypassing the midfield and no reliance on technique or skill. This fundamental error of a complete disregard for teaching children all about technique, skill, ball control, touch and instead talking up the virtue of the physical side of the game, is what is wrong with the english game. The French, Dutch, and Spanish teach their kids how to use the ball and spend a lot of time and money teaching them all about skill and technique. We don't do that in this country. No wonder managers look abroad for players, because they can get better players for less money!!

Until we get away from this jingoistic ( bordering on racist) view that all foreign imports are harmful to the game, we will wallow in a pit of international mediocrity. How can english players not benefit from playing with likes of Bergkamp, Henry, Cantona, Di Canio, Zola, Fabregas, Torres, Arteta, Berbatov, Viera, Pires, Vidic and so and so on. Teach kids how to play the game properly and managers won't need to look abroad ( providing english players aren't priced out of the market as they seem to be at present) Unfortunately we need to look nearer to home for root of our problem, not at what we have been importing. Coppel and Fergusmoan take heed!!!

Since you've gone on a tangent I'll put in my tuppence worth. I have always thought the cricket way of doing it might be an idea in football: a limit of two international players per team so you get the benefit of some really great foreign sportsmen while ensuring that attention and investment has to be made in the homegrown youth.

I thought the foreigners limit was still in place, it was just effectively unenforceable for EU players as it would go against the free movement of labour (hence why so many south-americans are suddenly getting themselves protugese/spanish/italian citizenship).

AtG, a friend of mine runs a 'soccer' training business in the states and they use a lot of progressive training methods, particularly Brazilian methods. He reckons that the USA will be a force to be reckoned with within 15 years, especially if their players can get regular club football or the domestic league improves.

He's already had one of his youngsters signed by Manchester Utd.

Hoots is a bit rubbish - used to be the old hobgoblin, but I convinced them to show Scotland games and the big screen and its now pretty good for a big game with a fair sized crowd - late licence and electric celidh on a weekend - not that bad and the #37 takes you pretty much to the door - no deep fried yorkies on offer - its does do good value Thai tho'

makes a decent change from trekking up to the Rob Roy or somewhere

I have just sold my ticket for the game and given teh large amount of money to charity - I cant face going up. Im not even sure if I will watch it TBH - its just too nerve racking

Right gents. Time to get sorted!

I have confirmation from Ray the general manager at the EDT that they will be showing the whole Scotland game live at 5pm on Saturday followed by the rest of the Russia vs Israel game when Scotland finishes.

So far we appear to have: Sean, Ultraconsultancy, BarryMarshall and of course anyone else most welcome!

Ray has reserved a bench for us on the big screen side and I may even bring along MrsBen and explain to her what the rules are.

I am nervous. Like Snorky I understand what it means to be a Scotland fan and in these scenarios its often best to jump into bed with your duvet over your head. I can't see us beating the Italians but it promises to be fun if not a wee bit tense and is a great excuse to meet for a pint. Snorky feel free to come and hang around at the back anonymously.

I shall be wearing a Kenny Dalglish era adidas tracksuit top with SCOTLAND on the back. Possibly with a little blonde lady. And will be there from 4.30pm
