What type of animal is a faux?

Some days ago I bought myself a faux fur hat which is very comfortable and warm. I must confess, however, that I have never before heard of an animal called a faux. Judging by the feel of the fur I am guessing it is something akin to chinchilla? Could anyone enlighten me on the following:

1. What type of animal is a faux?

2. Where are they from?

3. Are they endangered (I do hope not as I would hate to be responsible for trading in endangered species!)

SO what is a 'fake'? Never heard of one of them either. Does that mean that fake are found in France?

Actually they were smuggled in with the Hugenots and mostly reside in the north west of Scotland now. Can be trapped with twiglets.

A lot of 'faux' is 'faux'! Cheaper to breed and slaughter cats in the far east call it 'faux fur', than produce 'real faux' (excuse the oxymoron!).
