CWALD don't worry too much. A story about one of my siblings and the Royal Family did a front page and 5 more in the NoTW many years ago. I was dreading facing friends and colleagues the following Monday morning. Said sibling left the country while things cooled down and it soon blew over. People have short memories unless you continue to fan the flames. Lay low, don't comment. I hear Sudan is nice this time of year!

So the press will have us believe that sex and drugs are somehow scandalous or amoral and affect a person?s ability to hold a post of office. In my experience it is completely normal for most people to indulge in at least one and preferably both at some time in their lives.

So what about this? We will consider someone a suitable candidate for office if they are at the top of their profession as say, a barrister (i.e. fighting for the highest bidder regardless of the morality involved) or in the military (i.e. killing people to order regardless of the morality involved) or as a career politician (i.e. backstabbing, taking bribes, cutting corners etc regardless of the morality involved). The activities that they engage in as part of their careers are morally reprehensible but accepted as what needs to be done. We somehow gloss over the fact that it takes a person who is a bit of a bastard to do these things. This is why, thankfully, we aren?t all at it. But do we want to be ruled by bastards?

So why, if someone?s idea of a good time is taking a peyote suppository, being strapped naked to a tomb stone covered in quince jelly and beef drippings while punters in gorilla suits arm-wrestle each other to have a go, is it an issue? I can?t see how that could give me any evidence from which to make a judgment on what type of person they are or how they feel towards their fellow man.

Actually, fuck it. If people are stupid enough to eat the shit that is fed to them by the newspapers they deserve to be ruled by bastards.

    • I was lucky that I received a student grant from 1990-1995 first 3 years for degree and 2 years post graduate bursary. Both were based on my income and I did not have to pay back. Eldest daughter got student loan and after 20 years managed to pay it off, Youngest daughter still paying hers 18 years later. Granddaughter - still paying after 6 years. Grandson decided against FE and secured an apprentenship. I am glad that I am an old codger and not young anymore !

    • It is not only Southwark - our grandson, partner and 7 year old had a one bed council flat for years in Harlow Essex and all the properties offered were in poor condition. They eventually took a property as if they refused another one they would drop to the bottom of the Housing List. It was damp and in need of a level of renovation. Having lived in these conditions for a while they were offered better council accommodation recently, but further away from child's school. They had to pay 2 lots of rent for a few weeks as council had to undertake work in the new premises before they could move in,
    • Just had an interior decorating job done by Andy. The final outcome looks lovely and he did some remedial work at the same time to fill in gaps in the ceiling (due to previous electrical work) and to remediate any similar areas to ensure a polished overall look. Would highly recommend him for any similar job, he quoted a very reasonable price for the job as well. Thanks Andy!
