david_carnell
Dear RuthAs a Leeds Utd fan I spent many a time joshing with Simon about our South/West Yorks rivalry. His love of the Blades defied all known logic! He was an eloquent writer; funny and always good natured. I only met him once in person but am pleased to have done so.His absence from the forum of late has not gone unnoticed. He will be greatly missed here and no doubt elsewhere. We are all poorer for your loss. You have my deepest condolences. If you are collecting for charity in remembrance, please let me know. With sympathy,David. StraferJack
Devastated to hear the news today. Thank you Ruth for taking the time as others have said - it must be a very difficult time for you and it was a real pleasure to meet you both (I believe I squealed "you're my favourite poster" when I first met Simon outside the Clock House during a Barry Barry road race)He was, as you say, the most wonderful manStraferJack (nee SeanMacGabhann) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/21167-simonm-died-this-morning-30-dec/#findComment-510701 Share on other sites

Alan Medic
Hi RuthI too associated Simon with his football team. The loss of someone so close is hard. I hope you don't mind my quoting a part from a favourite book of mine. It's called The Prophet and sometimes I refer to it when looking for some understanding. I hope you like it.On Death Than Almitra spoke, saying, "We would ask now of Death." And he said: You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour. Is the sheered not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides....? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. Peckhamgatecrasher
Oh Ruth, I am so sad to hear this. Simon was such a funny and clever man and the forum is a lot poorer without him. He correctly identified me from my posts and approached me on Peckham Rye when I was walking the dog - I was so thrilled to meet him at last. You were both a lovely part of our community and my thoughts are with you. Laddy Muck
I am so sorry to learn of Simon's death. Your pain must be close to unbearable, and my heart goes out to you.I never met Simon either, but felt I knew him a little via his - often - insightful posts. One, for me in particular, stands out: it concerned a friend who had checked herself into Dignitas. Simon's advice (to go and say goodbye to her) helped me enormously. His posts gave him enormous presence, and, I too, shall miss him.Simon also made me chuckle, with his support for the "Blades". If you would like a hand-knitted Sheffield United scarf as an unusual tribute for Simon's funeral, please let me know. It would be a pleasure to knit one and send it to you by Special Delivery.I can only hope that you were able to say goodbye to your beloved husband and that your final moments together will serve to comfort you in the coming months. I am certain - from your post - that you have many wonderful memories to treasure and that these will also help to sustain you. Ruth, thank you so much for starting this thread. It could not have been an easy task. I pray that such strength and courage remain with you.Big hug.
