Knightmare was one of my all time faves. Quite scary for a little 'un. The fact that, at the end, they would be frozen in the game until next week gave me the creeps. As embellina says, the contestants were the type of kids to get bullied at school.

For the day, the technology was amazing.

Did any team ever win it? I don't think I ever saw anyone make it to the end. The theme tune is a great atmospheric sound.

Ahhh, memories.

I think I must have just caught the first year or so of it - before discovering the dubious delights of drinking cider in parks and hoping a girl might let me touch her up.

Cool though the programme undoubtedly was, I doubt if mentioning 'Knightmare' would have given me the edge over the bigger boys.

Yeah it started green, then bits of the face would fall away and it would go from orange to red and there would only be a skull left, until they found some bread or something to put in the napsack/satchel thing.

There were "wall monsters" who would ask them riddles and stuff too.

Only remember seeing one lot get to the end f the game, which took them several episodes I think!

    • My mum (91 years young!) well remembers going to Austin's as a child, which she described as an 'Aladdin's Cave'!  She absolutely loved it - and is still a shopping fiend to this day (I 'blame' Austin's 😉). Going back up Peckham Rye, passing Austin's on your right hand-side, just past Phillips Walk (so not far from Austin's at all), I believe there was a British Relay Wireless shop - this would have been in the late 1930s/early 1940s.  Does anyone know anything about this? My grandad (my mum's dad) used to manage it; it was severely damaged in The Blitz - but I am having trouble locating it.  Mum's memory is dim (she was 6 at the time); she originally thought it was in Rye Lane, but we think now it was in Peckham Rye just up from Phillips Walk (originally Phillips Road).
    • Thanks everyone, this will need to be reported again as the fox was still mobile and walking down the road when last seen... hopefully someone will spot and report.
