so finally its been revealed!! superdrug is opening on lordship lane - infront of M&S :) yay

Be grateful anyone has taken the spot in these tough times for the high street.

I welcome anyone willing to add footfall. Half the shops appear empty most of the time during the week. Use it or lose it I say. At least a high street chain will attract people to the area and increase footfall for other shops locally, including independents.

The business will survive if people give it their custom, they opened in Forest Hill and appear to be able to trade successfully.

FH did reduce their opening hours slightly, but is still doing well. But is nice to have the choice to go to Forest Hill which is nearer to me or LL.

From what I saw of the shop fitting yesterday, it doesn't look like they'll have a pharmacy, which will ensure the viability of Sogim, Lloyds and the others nearby.

I don;t think they will compete much with the pharmacies but the toiletries Superdrug sells will compete with CO Op and it looks to me like another nail in the coffin for that shop unfortunately.

Hooray! Ok so I'm not normally much in favour of chains....... but Superdrug does more affordable and wider range of toiletries than the pharmacies and supermarkets :-)

I would have to agree with your sentiment all over London it seems as if every high street is a clone. Do we really want to lose our distinctiveness?

Happy though surprised to have it in LL. However, with Argos at Sainsbury's too, just hope that this doesn't mean that the Peckham branches of both will disappear leaving a massive hole in the high street.

Superdrug have good and bad points but so far I've found them cheaper than the local pharmacies around the South London area.

The one at Camberwell never seems to have enough staff, but there are two ladies there on the tills that are always cheerful and polite and make up for my negative experiences.

I think affordable chains alongside valuable independents keep any high street viable. People arguing for exclusive independent high streets are (IMO), hinting that they want an exclusively expensive bunch of shops only accessible to some local residents, and not everyone. What?s wrong with a few affordable chains to help boost footfall and make LL inclusive for all socio economic groups in ED?
