Moving to North Cross Road

I have been looking at a few properties on North Cross Road, but am new to the East Dulwich area. It seems lovely during the day but was wondering about noise issues at night, especially either side of The Actress pub? I believe it chucks out at midnight each evening and just a little concerned about noise levels in a sports pub...

True. But you should be more concerned with the road being closed at least once a week, the early morning disturbances of the purveyors of over priced tat setting up their stands, and the smells of roasting pig flesh, whiffy cheese etc.

I will put my hand up and say that I find I have less disturbed sleep since I moved away from the Northcross Road area. If you have a car the parking situation will eventually drive you nuts.

We have lived on Northcross Road for 15 years, just a few doors down from the Actress. I can't say that the pub tipping out at midnight is a particular problem - sure, there is a bit more footfall and the occasional noisy nutter but that is the exception rather than the rule in our experience.

Razors has their own point of view about the market - but not everyone feels that way. Of course, we live at the other end of the road from the market so are not disturbed by the setting up of stalls. The road is closed on Saturday, just once a week, and this allows the market and shoppers a safe shopping session. If the things on sale there are not your scene, you don't have to shop there. Easy really.

So, that hopefully offers a balanced view to the points raised by Razors.

The downsides of living on such a great road - parking. If you don't have a car then you will have no problems. If you do have a car you will have problems parking near your house.

Otherwise, it is a good place to live. The neighbours are friendly and it has a nice feeling, I would say - give it a go, you might like it :))

I lived in Northcross Road for 3 years on the Lordship Lane end. If parking near your property is important to you, forget it. Don?t even think about a quiet Saturday morning; the market traders set-up very early. I enjoyed living there, but 3 years was enough. I had the most wonderful neighbours however. It?s very central, great community. On balance, no. Look elsewhere in East Dulwich.

its no worse than living in any of the other streets off lordship lane, each place has its nuisances - trouble wiv parking, noise at kicking out time wiv any of the many drinking an late night establishments AND wiv traders either by shop or stall. if u want a quiet and rather boring life ED as a whole wouldnt b the place for u

I answered the OP query, (friendly thing to do). I gave OP MHO. I didn't waste anyones time giving untrue opinions, and definately didn't abuse the forum by advertising a friends business.

Think those hotdogs are pants by the way,and am always worried about the hygiene on that stall when i pass . .

We live a bit further up on Pellatt road, 5min walk to NCR. Lovely & quiet, no parking issues and we can walk to the Market within a few minutes.

Best of both worlds... If you're worried about the pub/Market noise then maybe have a wonder around and see what you make of some other lovely roads close by.

We've allocated our devolved FY11_12 to resurfacing all of North Cross Road. Once that is done I've been assured most market pitches will be marked and so the traders can turn up at a much more reasonable time.

James, the closed end on sats still isn't being utilised properly. I wonder what the plan is in relation to this for marking out pitches, especially since the road closure is still a trial. If there's a plan of what pitch will go where that would be useful for residents to comment on. It would also be good to know if stallholders are reluctant to be in that bit eg because no power points or worries about being missed by people going along the pavement. It could all be much better planned IMO.

And Razors demonstrates again that some people have no idea how modern food production legislation, Health and Safety laws and EHO compliance actually works. Do you really think it's possible to serve 'mystery meat' from a roadside stall, or be unable to demonstrate that you wash your hands? Do you have any idea how tight the law and the council EHO officers are these days? It's not like the 80's, when you could still smoke while cooking, for example. Which is a good thing of course.

And why do you assume that a stall is likely to be unhygienic but, say, a restaurant won't be? In fact, why that stall and not any others down there, why single them out? Talk about bigoted...

Maybe ask the people on the stall instead of spouting your mouth off about things you plainly have no understanding about. But I suppose it's easier to snipe at them over the net. And no, I don't know them - just have no time for such ignorance when people are just trying to make a living and bring a little colour to the area.

An obvious downside of moving to NCR is the danger you might bump into Razors.

I agree with Razors

Unrefridgerated Cheese and deli food festering for hours on a hot summers day.

Homemade Cakes Fudge and the like with no evidence they were made in hygenic surroundings.

All the Indian restuarants constantly subjected to the scrutiny of Hygiene inspectors with their

little probes fining owners to ?1,000's if there food is 1/2 Deg C above limit.

Not so for the posh little stall holders from D.V.

Hog Roast swarming with flies.

Baguettes with the salad at air temp. Warm rice and salad Biggest cause of food poisoning.

And it gets the blessing of Southwark Council.

Well it would. They collect the rent..

The smell is enough to stop me going anywhere near it.
