I have obviously been out of the area too long, I had forgotten about the M&S on Walworth Road. So why on earth would someone travel to Beckenham if there is a two stores far closer? 3 including Lewisham.

Also, why do people think a small format Simply M&S is going to bring hoards of people in driving from far and wide when there are already loads of them nearby (and bigger ones to boot)....

Very true. Can understand a Waitrose possibly making a more dramatic impact.

Is this true James? it seems to have been contradicted sightly by subsequent posts.

eg:

"Entirely up to the freeholder - But I'd expect them to make a quick decision OR extend Iceland lease beyond January"

So Iceland are not definitely out of the equation?

I like Iceland. I find it very useful for part of my regular shopping so I hope it stays.

Brilliant documentary about Iceland on BBC2 last night. Despite a lot of the snobbery aimed at them, they are very strict on where their food is sourced from and what goes into each product, as well as being good value for money. They also do quite a lot of positive things for their staff as anyone who watched last nights documentary will have noticed. I'm now thinking maybe we should do more to support them staying on LL by shopping there more regularly, rather than opting for the unknown.

Tried and trusted formula MM. Bejams/Iceland have been on LL for nearly 30 years, and I've always loved them. They serve a large proportion of the local population and if we all supported them it would guarantee we don't end up with an empty retail spot on the high street, something none of us want. The M&S/Waitrose thing has gone on too long, let's just forget about them.
