Fair point Hels. It is a question that certainly needed asking. Not sure if it is so many posts per page despite their length or whether it depends on how long each individual post is.

hmmmm.....

Dear James, you seemed to have missed this again. To make it easier:

What is it about Waitrose that you have been pushing for it for years? What mandate did/do you have to approach retailers to come to the area? How do you choose which retailers you approach or is it just your personal choice?

I dont find Iceland slumlike in fact it is very clean and very acceptable as a shop.

Please explain why you find it slumlike.

Or is it because you live in a far different world to other people

The mere fact that Kerry Katona was once the Iceland cover girl is enough to keep me away from it forever.......

Oh that and the one fateful "chicken curry" I once bought in there where they clearly disregarded taste and meat when putting it together... Never again! Some students experimented with drugs, I experimented with Iceland Chicken Curry.

"Most" of "us"??

Please speak for yourself rather than on behalf of other people!

I don't want the new guys. I like Iceland for things like six large free-range eggs for a pound, the cheery people at the checkouts, and the welcome escape from pretentiousness.

Hi edhistory,

I'm an elected representative and was asked about such stores. Checked out the feeling via this forum and asked both M&S and Waitrose if they had plans to come. I'd prefer Iceland to stay because clearly many people like it. But they're no longer willing to pay the new market rent on their current site.

Equally I've spoken to three cinema chains about coming to Lordship Lane.

Regenerated the Leisure centre, all street lighting modernised, 20mph, new schools. It's what local politicians should do.

Why is this addressed to me?

Hi James, from what I've read on this forum it seems that you are doing your best for this community. However, I do hope that when you say you're asking people's views on Iceland, M&S & Waitrose, this forum is not your sole source for canvassing local opinion.

If people stopped posting here this thread would stop... Fact!

And decent pavements to enhance Lordship Lane's "cafe culture" must surely be next on the list. :)

Are all to be held hostage by car drivers? People needs homes, they also need local food retailers if they are not to drive everywhere.

My only misgiving is the point raised re closing down a low cost food outlet, they do sell fresh and frozen non-prepared food.

By the way, anyone know what is happening with the empty office block next to the swimming pool, it would make an ideal Iceland!

If Iceland closed, we would all miss the opportunity of buying their authentic Deep Pan Doner Kebab Pizzas. Italian food doesn't get much better than that - who needs M&S and Waitrose?

I actually tried one of those pizzas a while ago. The kebab pieces were kind of sausagey, and really tasteless. I eat some right old crap, but wouldn't really recommend that.

    • It has come to this author’s attention that the world of 4+ admissions — that most enigmatic of educational rites — continues to bewilder even the most composed of parents. Fear not. For in a former life, I was not merely a humble observer, but a seasoned educator of over twenty years, and Head of Pre-Prep for a distinguished dozen. Now, with quill exchanged for touchscreen, I have taken to that most modern of salons — Instagram — to dispense guidance, answer frequently whispered questions, and illuminate the shadowy corners of school selection with clarity and calm. Each post bears my signature twist: a blend of insight, levity, and the occasional raised eyebrow. Should you find yourself adrift in the sea of admissions, I suggest you peruse my latest dispatch. • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
