I've never spent much time on Facebook at all - even before work blocked it

I appreciate what it does but 2 things have caused me to think about closing my account

1) - the article highlighted at the start of the thread didn't contain any surprises - but it did make me reflect

2) - it was fine when it was a clean space but since everyone is busy sending sparkling new year messages and all the flim flam mini apps, and then al lteh adverts, it's now even messier than Myspace - and that is saying something

oh but wait it's impossible close and account - sheeeeeeit

For photo sharing Flickr is infinitely better, plus you get to license your photos whereas Facebook claim ownership on anything that's posted on their site.

As a nice but nisguided girl has been uploading my ED photos on to it as hers, without my permission, I'm less than thrilled.

I haven't taken any action as basically I'm not convinced anyone ever looks at facebook groups.

I too had a brief affair with the book of faces. After about a month the novelty wore off but I still check it once a week or so. I really don?t see the point of all the crap people keep sending me though?!?

So far the only real use has been organising my wedding in South Africa especially as all my friends and family are dotted around the 4 corners of the world.

Irrespective of who's viewing it this is copyright theft, and if I were you I'd suggest you get onto facebook about it. They need to be made aware that this has occurred. IF anyone did the same with mine I'd unleash tamed lawyers...

I'm not on Facebook, but a lot of people I know are (including Mr J who assures me it's essential for his studies, but spends most of his time playing chess with my brother. But I digress..)and what bothers me is that people post group photos including me and insist on "tagging" them. So, there are pictures out there labelled with my full name that I haven't chosen to post and that I have no control over. It's not that I have anything to hide particularly, it just feels a bit invasive.

Also, I also think people on Facebook very quickly forget just how public it is, something that I think also happens on here sometimes, and boundaries become a bit blurred. I recently moved jobs and before I started someone form my new job posted on the Facebook group for my old workplace basically asking if I was any good. Personally, I think asking fellow professionals to voice their opinions on a colleague on a public forum is completely unprofessional and inappropriate.

So, there are two examples of ways I'm affected by Facebook even though I choose not to use it. Not the end of the world, but certainly annoying.

Edited for spelling.

I joined facebook and it was good at first to get in touch with some old friends. However I also had a lot of requests from randoms -ie someone i worked with years ago and am no longer in touch with (was barely a friend of mine when we worked together!) - requests like that started to annoy me as people were just adding to their 'friend count'.

Then i got people tagging me in photos and i started to get a bit fed up of it all.

annaj i totally agree with the point you made that people forget how public it is -some of my friends on there had their addresses, birthdays, cities, some even phone numbers. it's an awful lot of information to have on a very public space.

so i comitted facebook suicide and deactivated my account - much happier not being a part of that 'community'

Quite simple..don't put any of that information up. Otherwise you're asking for trouble. Identity theft etc etc.

You can never delete facebook - just put it into hibernation...

true - i know my info is still in there - however, it's some photos and my hometown -i'm just happy that i'm no longer being tagged and poked, karate kicked or offered drinks that i cant actually drink!!

i didnt have any of my personal information up. can't understand why anyone would put up all that informaton up - totally right jah lush -identity theft is a real problem. if someone could convince some call centre worker that they were the chairman of Barclays with something like his address and date of birth, then that's enough information for a whole host of trouble.

In my opinion, facebook is represented by the number of 'friend' requests I get from people I havent heard from or seen since I was at primary or secondary school, some twenty odd years ago. I believe these people wish to claim me as a friend merely to make up the numbers on their profile page, as they seemingly have no interest in any further communication. Quite sad.

I got a friend request form a guy with my last name, and stupidly accepted it. He then invited me to loads of groups like "Clarkson Rules", "Petrolheads", "Need for spped" and other such nonsense.

I politely informed him that I don't drive or give a flying f**k about cars. Haven't heard from him since.

There is probabaly a reason why you didnt stay in touch anyway

I keep on getting friend request from people that I don't know but who are from my home town. I do not display my home town on my profile so I can only assume that I have met/known these people at some time in my past and just can't remember them.

Problem is that it is quite a small town and you don't want to offend anyone because the chances are that next thing that person is married to your best mate or teaching your child at school or something.

Fine, only I can't because I'm not on Facebook. MrJ has untagged a few, but people put the names back on. It's not even that any of the pictures I've seen are particularly bad, my embarassingly drunk days are mostly behind me, it's just that I'd prefer to have control over where my full name is published.

I like Facebook but don't use my own name - not even PeckhamRose before you look - and I tell friends I am hooking up with who I am and delete any photos people hook me up with. It is useful for knowing what is going on in music or some event like a theatre and so on as people can create a group for that particular play. I know it can give one (not me, of course) a reason to be more paranoid if you find you have not had a poke for a week..... or wondering why no-one has written on your wall.... but then we're addicted to the net and emails, aren't we? What DID they do before telephones by the way?

I joined as I'd had a few (well 3) requests to join from 2 friends and errr.. my sister.

When I logged on, my friend had a picture of a man doing something unmentionable to his arse and I quickly decided I didn't need my little sis knowing what sort of friends I have and removed my account.

Thanks.

What WAS the worst spelling error?

PeckhamRise?

Ummmm

Nope, can't imagine.

and cdonline you could have just deleted that friend!

    • I thoroughly recommend Jay from JK Electrical Contractors who is an NICEIC registered. NICEIC is the UK's leading certification body for the electrical contracting industry and conducts regular audits and assessments on all its members. It is the specialist trade body which certifies professional electricians.  Jay completed the installation of a 19 way consumer unit for us and works to the highest standards and our entire electrical installation is now fully compliant with 18th Edition of the electrical wiring regulations. Before installing the new CU he traced and corrected faults that had developed over the last 25 years -some of which were my DIY bodges that were non-compliant.  We now have an installation that is 100% safe and  reliable . His contact details are :- 0208 150 6450 [email protected] Here is what he installed for us.
    • I fully support this petition, however it will need to be shared far & wide to be effective. Also there is always a huge amount of interest / objection during the festival, but not so much when they start consulting for the next one, usually around January. It's crucial that everyone that has been impacted makes their voice heard then.  A couple of points which may be good to include in the wording (if it is still possible to amend?) - The total tickets sold are way more than 3000. The licence allows a capacity of up to 9,999, but this may include staff & performers etc. The published attendance for 2024 was:  Friday – 8,999 / Saturday – 9,512 / Sunday – 9,422 So that's c.28,000 people trampling & littering our park over three days - people who have no need or desire to take any care or consideration of our park.  - Gala claim for 2024 that "62% of all ticket holders were from Southeast London and 18% of these were from hyper-local postcode areas SE15 and SE22." So a bit of maths shows that means that around 89% of attendees were not what most people would term 'local'... - Gala have ambitions / plans to extend the number of event days to 6, over two weekends. They applied for a licence for this in 2024, but then withdrew it. Instead they added a "free" event, billed as a community day, to the existing 3 day festival, thereby increasing the event days to 4.  This would appear to be an attempt to set a precedent for increasing the number of event days, and it's inevitable that they will attempt to secure the 6 days they desire for 2026, to increase their profits further. Two weekends in a row of noise, disturbance & disruption would be unacceptable, plus an extra c.18,000 trampling & littering the park... - The site size has been increased. The claim is that it is to compensate for lost storage space due to recent flood alleviation works, but the area has increased by more than the area lost, and appears to have been used for attendee activity rather than site storage. Gala have often stated that the festival can only be located in the park because the footprint has been designed specifically for that area, and yet this year the footprint had been amended & extended without any apparent issues. Surely this proves that it could be relocated?  Apologies, I just can't help going into rant mode on this issue, but hopefully some of the above may be helpful in increasing the argument presented by the petition?
    • Best to just get in touch with the council. You need to see what works were approved and the scope.  It's probably advisable to get an independent legal survey (not a standard RICS) and look at current condition, what they said they'd fix, if they did what they said and what the problems are with what they did. Was it just your flat and the other flat mentioned? Asking in case there's any other leaseholder/ tenant involved
