London Overground is cheaper than National Rail (same prices as the tube). East Dulwich isn't served by LO, so you have to use the Southern service, and are charged accordingly. Even if for one stop.

You are correct that's the justification allright I am just challenging this on the grounds that touching in and out only once in the same zone should be the same price for payg regardless of the station given the same equality exists for travel cards over a week / month.

Yes, I agree. It's a legacy of a lack of transport integration. Might be fixed in 20 years.

@ medley - nope, london bridge is in zone 1, so I am only suggesting that zone 2 to zone 1 should cost the same pay as you go regardless of the stations involved considering it costs the same for a weekly or monthly within the same zones regardless of stations used.

Not excusing it...but it's the change in transport mode. If you use NR or TfL only then the cost is lower. You pay more because you're using both (in fact the same as if you used the train and tube).

@ Lowlander, I understand why they are charging more I just disagree with the logic and the fairness of the current fair structure. You pay the same for a weekly zone 1&2 if you use dlr, tube, overground and NR all on the one day, and likewise with price capping for zone travel.


I believe that a single train journey payg should be charged based on the zones of travel. If makes no sense to discriminate against the payg customers in this manner.

The ?3.70 for Shoreditch High Street to ED is the Zone 1-2 fare in the "Adult National Rail through fares" table ("for journeys including Tube, DLR or London Overground") at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/fares-2012/26099.aspx.

How do you get from London Bridge to Shoreditch?

You will pay ?62 a month to go from ED or Peckham Rye to LBR but it jumps to ?112 a month to use Shoreditch as the destination.


You may as well buy a monthly travelcard which is obviously the intention, pay more for less should be the official TfL motto.


Note that fares also go up by 4%-ish for next year, to keep in step with inflation apparently.

If you use the bus it's cheap*


If you use the tube/overground it's cheap*


It's when you start to use combinations that it becomes expensive. I walk 40 minutes a day (20 each way) to and from the station; keeps me fit but also saves ~?500 a year


*I use the word 'cheap' very loosely. Less expensive certainly.

So I have tried this for a couple of days and it isn't quite as bad as I thought. Definitely longer than my previous commute though.


Yesterday I went Denmark Hill to CJ which was fine but when I got there I was told there weren't any trains to Kensington Olympia and was made to go to Victora, which kind of defeated the point...


This morning was better although I was sat on the CJ to Olympia train for nearly 15 mins before it went anywhere. Guess I'll just need to play around with the timings so I have less changeover time. Bonus is that I have also realised I can actually get off at Brompton Road which is better.


Will persevere!

If any of you have been overcharged as part of the ELL changes, please post on the Oyster and National Rail website, an independent site which has successfully got TfL to change fares in the past.


Mike who runs the site is compiling a list of journeys where it's clear passengers have been ripped off by TfL not updating their station price lists.

I think you mean West Brompton rather than Brompton Road. Brompton Road station was on the Piccadilly Line between South Kensington and Knightsbridge and was closed in the 1930s. The station is still there with 1930'S paraphernalia extant, but getting off and on there might be a problem.....

Oh for goodness sake, will everyone please shut up. I've been sitting in a seat on my journey to work for the first time for years. Do you really have to tell everyone else about it?

Can anyone help as I am a bit confused - I went from Southgate (zone 4 tube) to Peckham Rye (zone 2) and it cost me ?2.00 on oyster.


It usually costs me ?1.50 as I Have a zone 1-2 travel card, and ?1.50 is the price from zone 2-4.


According to my oyster staeement it cost me 50p more because I went outside of the alloctated zone on my travel card, but it has always cost me ?1.50 and I swipe in/out everywhere I go.


I have since tested the journey from ED (swiping in at ED) and it cost me ?1.50 again - so why did it cost 50p extra coming out at Peckham Rye, when it's closer to London and the same zone as ED?

@the-e-dealer - are you sure? According to the season ticket calculator website http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/seasonticket/tickets you can still buy a weekly ticket from Denmark Hill to Wandsworth Road for ?10.30, even though Wandsworth Road is now an Overground only station.

Dawson Heights Estate in the 1980s, while not as infamous as some other estates, did have its share of anti-social behaviour and petty crime. My brother often used the estate as a shortcut when coming home from his girlfriend’s house, despite my parents warning him many times to avoid it. Policing during that era had a distinctly “tough on crime” approach. Teenagers, particularly those from working-class areas or minority communities, were routinely stopped, questioned, and in some cases, physically handled for minor infractions like loitering, skateboarding, or underage drinking. Respect for authority wasn’t just expected—it was demanded. Talking back to a police officer could escalate a situation very quickly, often with harsh consequences. This was a very different time. There were no body cameras, dash cams, or social media to hold anyone accountable or to provide a record of encounters. Policing was far more physical and immediate, with few technological safeguards to check officer behaviour. My brother wasn’t known to the police. He held a full-time job at the Army and Navy store in Lewisham and had recently been accepted into the army. Yet, on that night, he ran—not because he was guilty of anything—but because he knew exactly what would happen if he were caught on an estate late at night with a group of other boys. He was scared, and rightfully so.
    • I'm sure many people would look to see if someone needed help, and if so would do something about it, and at least phone the police if necessary if they didn't feel confident helping directly. At least I hope so. I'm sorry you don't feel safe, but surely ED isn't any less safe than most places. It's hardly a hotbed of crime, it's just that people don't post on here if nothing has happened! And before that, there were no highwaymen,  or any murders at all .... In what way exactly have we become "a soft apologetic society", whatever that means?
