Oh, talk about short memories. I am looking at pics on my wall of:

my lovely grandad, in the ARP

my great uncle John, disappeared, D Day

my uncle John, killed Italy 1943?

my auntie Margaret, bombed to bits as a Queen Alexandra nurse in Belgium, but survived

Please don't ask me what D Day was. We is all ungrateful beastly little flibbertigibbets and our forgetingness will be our undoing.

Bob S,

I'm on a fishing trip as I don't know the answers.

I would have expected the ARP to have a "W" on their helmets, but there was some local improvisations before national standardisation.

They could be local volunteer ambulance drivers.

So, any help in identification is welcome.

I don't think that paint was rationed, but it was in short supply, as were paintbrushes, and for domestic use limited to a three-colour ultilty range: cream, green, and brown.

    • Is anyone else having difficulty booking Silver Swim sessions (Tuesday and Thursday between 3pm-4pm?) Almost all the spaces are taken before the online booking system opens at 10pm several days before. Last night there appeared to be one space available for next Tuesday. I tried to book at one second past 10pm but was unsuccessful. This seems to have been a recent phenomenon. I made a telephone call this morning but just received a recorded message saying that the voicemail box was full. Am I right in assuming that in person bookings are now taking precedence over online ones?
