I don't think it will be quite a case of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." He'll take a different approach to the problems he faces and I'm hoping that firstly he'll make a stand against the Israelis continued bombardment of Gaza amongst other things.

Anyone who isn't some right-wing neo-con religious fundamentalist idiot and a puppet to big business has got to be better in my book. I wish him luck and it will be a long struggle, a bit like going up a hill backwards with the brakes on.

Just watching Sky News and an American commentator in D.C. has just gasped with excitement saying he has seen black and white people talking to each other ahead of the inauguration!

"the beautiful thing about all this is, there black people and white people talking to each other in a way, in a fashion, that is, unseen"

Certainly Not Young Man!

However(and please don't take this personally) if Mich. ever saw me,in person, with my brand new teeth(Born 19/1/09) then well you are a close third behind me and The Main Man;-)

Sophisticated,Charming,Mature,Elegant,Beautiful.

What more could a Man want in his Partner>:D<

I hate to go against the flow, but I have just listened to his speech, and whilst it sounded very inspirational and aspirational, what was he really saying? He's a great orator but he sounds like he has been watching to many Martin Luther King Jr speeches.

I think you do me a disservice - though I may trot ( ha) out the usual Anarcho-Syndicalist lines sometimes, I do actually have a grasp ( and degrees in )US Politics - hes still a puppet , just different people pulling ther strings - in the 2 party system, you cant be anything bust a likelable puppet, albeit with a personality sometimes

With the Bush pair, you knew what you were getting and it wasnt a surprise - just wait til Obama messes this up and Jeb Bush parachutes in to rescue the Presidency - hes smarter than his dad & bro put together

Change ? No-Change should have been his byline - I have nothing against the fellow and would sooner see him that Another Bush, but thats like saying your favorite serial killer is Dennis Nielsen over Peter Sutcliffe - hardly a choice at all

The significance of this day was put into perspective by Mr.Ian Wright who On completion of the new President's speech was deeply analytical as usual and commented "I believe in this dude more than Bush you know what I mean"...

Somehow those poignant words perfectly captured the whole euphoric mood of this most momentous of days....

you're right snorks - i didn't mean to suggest you come at this from an uninformed angle. Apologies. And I remember Bill Hicks being asked if he is right wing or left wing and he said something similar about there being neither, it was the puppeteer with teh left and right hand that you needed to watch. I get it, I really do

But even allowing for all of that there must be some grounds for optimism. As a frame of reference, where and when in history do you think comes closest to your ideals?

and on a more upbeat note... I particularly liked this bit of his speech

"we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the

knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining

of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task."

and boy are we going to need that kind of attitude in the years ahead!!!!

happy 'glad seizing' forumites:-S

Time will tell... I want to believe that things can change. Looks like he's set to close Guantanamo Bay... to me that seems like a pretty strong statement of intent.

    • For some strange reason, hubby likes to spend 'big' on family cards birthday and Christmas. I think it may have stemmed from his mother- she equated money with status and was a bit of a snob!  She was also quite eccentric - we asked for a suitcase one year and got a set of 4. One year she gave hubby the equivalent of a hearing aid - it was a device to hear bird song. Nobody we know send expensive cards. We have a twice yearly set of cards from the Foot and Mouth Painting Artists and have done for the last 30 plus years. I think they are around £12 for set of 10  - cannot remember what we paid this winter but they are fantastic value and beautiful paintings.  One of the best places around to buy cards is the Fair Trade Centre at Christ Church Barry Road. Fantastic selection with a starting price of £1.30.
