Jeremy
Hi Charlie - I actually think the location is pretty good. The layout... not ideal, but it's not a deal-breaker. Hope you don't close.Obviously some customers are put off by the price of some of the beers, so maybe if you did more to publicise the lower cost options (?4 a pint or less) then people would be less concerned. Tradesman32
I like this Bar. Great range of beers albeit a little pricey for the bulk of the menu. I like an IPA and there are lots to choose from so its good for me. Calsug
Fantastic to hear you're not closing have to admit was a bit upset by this "news", can't beat your monster dog and a bottle of the alcoholic fentimans ginger beer. Have you ever thought of making the back bit more informal with the high bar tables like in the middle section? In an ideal world wish you replaced Foxtons but thats another story... cle
I'd wager that Hoopers' local opposition (even if just one busybody nimby) would be lesser if it was more like the Victoria Inn or Montpellier, rather than a real ale/spit & sawdust boozer the woman would probably never go to.Agreed with the poster above that I have zero sympathy for someone who moves in opposite a pub and then complains. Hopefully it reopens in some shape or form - I'd go lots. Jah Lush
Hoopers closed for good on Xmas Day and it certainly wasn't spit and sawdust. It was a very nice pub with a great selection of ales and a fairly good selection of wine. There was good music there and the comedy nights were fun. Damn that neighbour. I miss it. cle
I'm not saying spit & sawdust in a perjorative way, but in terms of her impression of it I guess. I'm newish to the area, have never seen it open. DulwichFox
This Thread was about the Draft House but seems to of Morphed into one about Hoopers. There were occasions where I may of gone there. I really would not of felt safe in the area walking back home alone. I'm certain I'm not the only one to have such concerns. Foxy. Jeremy
I've lived on Ivanhoe Rd for 5 years. Not a single incident. It's a good area. Also you don't have to walk through the estate to get there - quicker to up down Colpeston Rd, or even Adys/Bellenden/Avondale. So you are saying because I am a guy, I should be able to Fight and be a thug. Bigger guys than me have been turned over.. Having been robbed and beaten unconscious in Crawthew Grove Nov. 2006 I am always concerned at night. Have some pics. but you might not recognise me. Ok so you have walked back from there at night. Well perhaps you had had a few bevvies and not aware of any danger. Well that's when folk are most vulnerable.. I'm talking about just walking somewhere without constantly worrying about being attacked.I've walked to and from Hoopers both sober and not so sober, in the dark.I'm sorry if you were attacked in Crawthew Grove in 2006, but I've walked down there by myself in the dark many times over the last twenty years without incident.I'm not going to stay at home and never go out just because I live in an urban area where sometimes bad things happen. cle
I always walk down Copleston Road from that area to ED. Totally safe and quicker than via Dog Kennel Estate. That actual area around Ivanhoe Road seems far safer than around East Dulwich station and dare I say, Lordship Lane. Anecdotally from this forum, less crime too which the Met's crime maps support. Louisa
I'm with DulwichFox on Hoopers. I wouldn't go anywhere in that area without being in a taxi at night. Back to the draft house, I think Lordship Lane suffers from too much of the same thing in terms of pubs/bars. You have three venues within a space of about 50 yards - all competing for custom, all pretty much offering the same thing. Variety is what is needed. That location would work far better if it had a theme or offered something exciting and different. Without sounding too sympathetic to the Claphamite influx (god forbid), I think to match an area such as Northcote Rd more variety has to be offered or else the crowds have no reason to go there.Louisa. StraferJack
Thing is the Draft House does exactly that Louisa - it offers something no other bar on the Lane comes close to Hundreds of beers and the ability to have 1/3 of a pint of the draft beers, so you can sample more of them Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34880-drafthouse-pub-lordship-lane/page/3/#findComment-669005 Share on other sites
Louisa
John variety comes in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, the demographic homework obviously wasn't done on this occasion. A pub offering what the Draft House offers would do amazingly well in upmarket Richmond-upon-Thames or Chiswick for example, but it doesn't appeal to the inner city younger crowds with less disposable income. The sort of variety I refer to is the kind you'd see in Shoreditch for example, trendy, exciting, live bands, drinks promos etc etc I'm not expert on how this would be achieved, but I'm sure there's a gap in the market locally for some sort of hip downmarket but cool vibe. Louisa. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34880-drafthouse-pub-lordship-lane/page/3/#findComment-669008 Share on other sites
