Hi Charlie - I actually think the location is pretty good. The layout... not ideal, but it's not a deal-breaker. Hope you don't close.

Obviously some customers are put off by the price of some of the beers, so maybe if you did more to publicise the lower cost options (?4 a pint or less) then people would be less concerned.

Fantastic to hear you're not closing have to admit was a bit upset by this "news", can't beat your monster dog and a bottle of the alcoholic fentimans ginger beer. Have you ever thought of making the back bit more informal with the high bar tables like in the middle section?

In an ideal world wish you replaced Foxtons but thats another story...

I'd wager that Hoopers' local opposition (even if just one busybody nimby) would be lesser if it was more like the Victoria Inn or Montpellier, rather than a real ale/spit & sawdust boozer the woman would probably never go to.

Agreed with the poster above that I have zero sympathy for someone who moves in opposite a pub and then complains. Hopefully it reopens in some shape or form - I'd go lots.

Hoopers closed for good on Xmas Day and it certainly wasn't spit and sawdust. It was a very nice pub with a great selection of ales and a fairly good selection of wine. There was good music there and the comedy nights were fun. Damn that neighbour. I miss it.

I'm pretty sure it didn't close down because of the neighbour.

It closed down because despite Jamie and Viv's best efforts it was making a continuing loss due to lack of custom, and became totally unsustainable.

If that was anyone's impression, they were very much wrong. It was a nice pub. Just not enough customers.

This Thread was about the Draft House but seems to of Morphed into one about Hoopers.

There were occasions where I may of gone there.

I really would not of felt safe in the area walking back home alone.

I'm certain I'm not the only one to have such concerns.

Dear oh dear, man up Fox!

I used to walk up there by myself through the estate in the dark.

Anyway there are other ways to get there.

PS It's "would not have", etc, not "would not of", etc :)

Man Up... ??.

So you are saying because I am a guy, I should be able to Fight and be a thug.

Bigger guys than me have been turned over..

Having been robbed and beaten unconscious in Crawthew Grove Nov. 2006 I am always concerned at night.

Have some pics. but you might not recognise me.

Ok so you have walked back from there at night. Well perhaps you had had a few bevvies and not aware

of any danger. Well that's when folk are most vulnerable..

Who's talking about fighting and being a thug? I'm talking about just walking somewhere without constantly worrying about being attacked.

I've walked to and from Hoopers both sober and not so sober, in the dark.

I'm sorry if you were attacked in Crawthew Grove in 2006, but I've walked down there by myself in the dark many times over the last twenty years without incident.

I'm not going to stay at home and never go out just because I live in an urban area where sometimes bad things happen. Mostly they don't.

What are you talking about ?? I go out EVERY night..

I walk several miles in the surrounding areas EVERY day...

Dulwich, Hearn Hill, Brixton, Camberwell , Peckham.

Foxy...

I always walk down Copleston Road from that area to ED. Totally safe and quicker than via Dog Kennel Estate.

That actual area around Ivanhoe Road seems far safer than around East Dulwich station and dare I say, Lordship Lane. Anecdotally from this forum, less crime too which the Met's crime maps support.

Sounds along the lines of The Patch - community run pub idea for The Mag... didn't pan out as they didn't hit their funding target but nice idea :)

I'm with DulwichFox on Hoopers. I wouldn't go anywhere in that area without being in a taxi at night. Back to the draft house, I think Lordship Lane suffers from too much of the same thing in terms of pubs/bars. You have three venues within a space of about 50 yards - all competing for custom, all pretty much offering the same thing. Variety is what is needed. That location would work far better if it had a theme or offered something exciting and different. Without sounding too sympathetic to the Claphamite influx (god forbid), I think to match an area such as Northcote Rd more variety has to be offered or else the crowds have no reason to go there.

Louisa.

John variety comes in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, the demographic homework obviously wasn't done on this occasion. A pub offering what the Draft House offers would do amazingly well in upmarket Richmond-upon-Thames or Chiswick for example, but it doesn't appeal to the inner city younger crowds with less disposable income. The sort of variety I refer to is the kind you'd see in Shoreditch for example, trendy, exciting, live bands, drinks promos etc etc I'm not expert on how this would be achieved, but I'm sure there's a gap in the market locally for some sort of hip downmarket but cool vibe.

    • https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/police-hunt-attack-south-london-b1247389.html Apologies if already posted on here - did look, couldn't find anything... 'The Metropolitan Police have appealed for help to find a man after a woman was seriously injured in an unprovoked attack in south London. The woman, in her 20s, was assaulted on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich at around 4.45pm on Monday August 25. She was treated by paramedics for injuries to her face and her jaw was broken in the attack. The victim was then taken to hospital and she continues to be supported by specialist officers. Officers are now searching for the suspect and are urging members of the public to come forward if they have information. He is described as a black man in his 30s or 40s with balding hair. He was wearing dark clothing during the attack. He is said to have approached the woman while she was by herself before swearing at her and then hitting her in the face. Detective constable Charlotte Kerr, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are working hard to find the person we believe is responsible for this senseless and unprovoked attack. “While we continue our enquiries, we hope our increased neighbourhood police presence will offer some reassurance to women and girls throughout the local area. “If you saw anything on Monday, 25 August – particularly between the junction of Lordship Lane and Chesterfield Grove at around 16:45hrs - do not hesitate to get in touch with us. “No matter how small you think your information is, it may be the key that unlocks our investigation.” Any witnesses or anyone who can help identify the suspect is asked to please contact the Met via 101, quoting 5018/25AUG or 01/7897951/25. Those who wish to share information anonymously can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'
    • I think, with schools, you really have to find the one that suits your child, rather than moving to a school catchment and then hoping it works. Mine both went to a high ranking and covetable school and had very different experiences - one loved it and the other was bullied and traumatised, and hated it. WE actually moved away because she couldn't walk around the area (yes - Dulwich area, so one of the local schools).
    • We live a little further down, on Pymers Mead. Traffic is terrible (always has been, but worse since the introduction of the Southwark LTNs). It's mainly the school drop -- traffic is noticeably lighter once the private schools break up  Have a few friends who live on that side of CR backing on to the train line. None has had any major complaints and the gardens on that stretch are fairly long, so you're not right on the line. Some have kids who go to Charter North -- its catchment defintely extends to Croxted Road. Other state secondaries nearby are Elmgreen and, of course, Kingsdale, although that doesn't have a catchment -- pure lottery
    • Hi. Does anyone know of a silver making jewellery workshop. I am trying to find something nice for my daughter’s 18th birthday.l for her and some friends but everything I find online is too pricey or can’t accommodate 10 girls. Thanks
