Marmora Man
Within a month Mr & Mrs MM are off - to North Cornwall and downsizing. Closer to friends and relative we will always remember East Dulwich with great pleasure. How will I miss ED? Let me count the ways. The EDF is still the ?go to? for advice ? if no longer for robust political discussion. As one of those that distributed Mark?s original cards to promote it I?ll continue to ?lurk? but will try not to comment from the depths of Cornwall.Strafer Jack (aka Sean McGabhan), Otta (aka Keef), El Pibe, PeckhamRose, Mockney Piers, Santerme, ????, Mic Mac, David Carnell and many many others for the cut and thrust of early debates.William Rose ? no better place for smoked streaky, sirloin steaks or friendly advice.Fresh Flower Company ? supplier of my weekend rose, occasional treats and gifts for friends. The Bishop ? far better than the Forester?s it replaced but, sadly, no longer quite what it was. I continue to wish it well ? if only for the memory of great macaroni cheese, buttermilk chicken or deep fried cheese sticks lunches (with glass of house red) when I was ?working from home?.The Actress ? for its intriguing pizzas.Pretty Traditional ? all my fresh veg, from the first Christmas here till now. SMBS for all the other stuff. The Palmerston ? for our ?pub suppers? of superb high quality.Dulwich DIY ? without which I could never have maintained and improved Marmora Mansions.Si Mangia ? so convenient for ?let?s not cook ? let?s go for a local bite?. Great value for money meals.Puremackintosh.com ? Chris Essex-Hill for maintaining and feeding my Mac addiction, and keeping all the applications and devices working for me.Turner's for keeping our various bangers runningSt Christopher?s Hospice ? for helping us de clutter before selling and then taking so much of our downsized stuff.Mr Lui ? the only local Chinese worth eating in.Winkworths for selling Marmora MansionsGanapati ? the only Indian restaurant I?d travel back to London for.Cosmos Electrics ? for all our electrical worksGreen & Blue ? sadly missed. ToastED ? a very welcome replacement.Merrifields ? for maintaining my shoe leather for so longMoxons ? friendly, helpful and a great selection. Good banter.East Dulwich Deli ? still the best sausage rolls, brownies to die for and great service ? plus the occasional 2 for 1 bread deals. Rod Francis (Flow London) ? for all our plumbingThe Cheese Block ? the best selection this side of Neals Yard Dairy.Suzanne James ? for so many, superb and delightful Supper Club dinners and all the guests that we met there. For Peckham Rye, Dulwich Park, The No. 63 bus, views over the London skyline, the Overground which has transformed my commuting, easy access to London ?proper? with its theatres, cinemas, restaurants, walks, bridges, the River Thames, Boris Bikes, New Year?s Eve fireworks, The Oval and cricket, Borough Market, the Rope Walk ? Bermondsey, The National Theatre, Angels & Gypsies and to countless others ? neighbours, bus drivers, shoppers, Northcross Road stall holders and everyone else that have returned my ?good mornings?, ?good evenings? and chatter with a friendly smile. Marmora Man
Alan, Oz is not for us. Cornwall is where we started our married life, Devon & Cornwall are where many of our friends still live and I long to hear the sound of the sea and fewer sirens. As a former navy man I can't think of a more suitable destination for you.Do come back for visits. Are you have a farewell snifter somewhere I could buy you a single malt? StraferJack
Heh, it wouldn?t be the EDF if a nice farewell post didn?t elicit a response suggesting they were going to the wrong place ? nice work Alan ;-)As someone who will be making a similar post within the year, I raise a glass to Marmora Man, agree with his points and wish him all the best, in a stunning part of the country Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34970-how-will-i-miss-thee/#findComment-667555 Share on other sites

Townleygreen
Hope it is the right move for you and family, MM.Personally I'd hate to live there. It's fine for a holiday (IF the weather's nice!) but too far from civilisation for me. IMHO. computedshorty
Marmora ManMarmora Man is moving to a village in Cornwall, so far off, leaving behind one time local neighbour, born Boris Karloff.Thoughts of the Herne Tavern Garden?s no longer on show,to St Tudy?s Village near Wadebridge just the place to go.St Tudy's pub, The Cornish Arms, your hosts Paul & Jo,will be your local drinking place, to meet others who go.The community Shop and Post Office, run by the peoplethe old grey stone Parish Church has a tower, not a steeple.Five miles to Wadebridge where the village of Polmorna is,here once lived my sister, on holiday we often visited this.A stream runs under the window, lean out and you can touch, heavy rain will often flood the cottage, cleaning up and such. Will you have enough to do, to pass away spare time then a trip to St Issac, or as it known by Doc Martin as Port Wenn,Sit and watch the new episodes being made at Fern Cottage, you might even find yourself as an extra shown in the footage. To move away is often thought that no others know about, don't be at all surprised if you happen hear a familiar shout.East Dulwich Forum, might not be known at where you go,we still remember Marmora man on occasions when you show.Good Luck! ????
Hope the move and change all goes well.I can understand that you may wish to avoid posting on local issues, but you'd be sadly missed on the more general universal ones - even by those that don't always agree with you. We have less decent threads on those nowadays but it would be sad if your contributions ceased on those that we do get. These debates will generally be poorer without you - as they often are without our dear old friend(s) from Singapore.Anyway, all the best to you and the family. mockney piers
I knew you were off but living in denial is an easy thing to do. T'is a sad day but all the best for you and yours, and having hung about in the middle of nowhere in Suffolk for a bit I can see why Cornwall beckons. You'll be missed, though with You and huguenot into the realms of lurked, there is probably some sort of quantity theory of insanity balance that remains. (you're the sane part of the equation ;-)) . Drxyster
Although you will no longer be an "ED Effer", I will miss your well thought out comments on a number of matters and although no longer an ED resident, I and I would presume others would welcome your comments on national matters that affect us all.As an aside, a personal thank you regarding buildings insurance, that I had to renew recently, on my partially under pinned home.I contacted the structural engineers in Southampton mentioned in your post regarding this problem and Mike Royall called to do the survey.I sent the report to five insurance companies and reduced my premium by over ?400.00, the approximate cost of the report.Obviously this will be repaid over the coming years many times.I am looking forward to future posts from you. My very best wishes to you and your family for a very happy and enjoyable life in Cornwall.
