Where to go shopping locally?

Hello!

This sounds random but I have moved to ED from somewhere with a lot of local high street shops, and wondered where people recommend as the closest place to go for general high street stuff like boots, topshop, h&m, zara, or even a department store like debenhams etc...it would be great if there was a small mall or highstreet close by somewhere with this kind of thing when you want to do a bit of shopping at the weekend without going to oxford street or westfield?

I do try and use the local shops around lordship lane as much as possible, but the range for clothes is not that extensive so any advice would be really helpful :)

Bromley or Croydon.

Brixton has a topshop and other high street stores - the 37 takes you there from East Dulwich Road.

You can get a direct train to West Croydon from ED

yeah, you can be in west end in about 20 minutes.

Lewisham is pretty nearby, or you can brave Croydon......

Bromley is pretty dismal.

Are you specifically wanting to avoid Oxford Street, as otherwise I'd have thought that was your best bet - not hard to get to from ED.

Croydon's about a 25 min drive, the West End is about the same on the train. I know which I'd prefer (unless at xmas, when Covent Garden/Oxford St/etc is unbearable). Obviously a much better selection of shops, and you can pop in somewhere nice for lunch or a couple of cheeky beers. Even take in a museum or gallery.

9 minutes on the train from Denmark Hill to Victoria where there is a House of Fraser, Zara, M&S, Boots etc.

Also is there anywhere in ED where you can buy makeup?! I think we really need a Boots or Superdrug or something...

I like ED and Mrs Robinson and Oliver Bonas for homeware stuff but wondered if I had missed anything else good?

There's a Lloyds Pharmacy on North Cross Road which has a small selection of mainstream makeup. :)

Brixton has a Boots and Morleys departments store

Clapham Junction has a huge Boots and a Debenhams

Peckham and Camberwell both have Superdrug stores

But the simple answer is that there's nowhere in a 2-3 mile radius which has the complete "high street shopping experience".

I can't bear Oxford Street anymore so I always go to Bromley. So quick on the train or 20 minutes by car - never any logjams - and ridiculously cheap to park in the small multi-storey car park there. The Glades shopping centre is a treasure trove! It has everything. And it isn't dismal at all, Sue! Especially at Christmas. All the clothes stores you can imagine are there - for any budget. And then just outside one of the exits there's a Cafe Rouge for a nice glass of wine when you've done your shopping.

But for food I try to keep it local. East Dulwich/Peckham borders is wonderful for eating out, Pretty's for veg, Spirited Wines for plonk, William Rose or the butcher opposite The Plough for meat and Moxtons for fish. Franklin's Farm Shop for amazing tea and coffee and artisan-made pasta. I have been known to buy the odd piece of retro furniture at Mrs Robinson's though. Then the Pound Store in Peckham for sundries - it is also great for things like kitchen and bathroom basics - all the mainstream brands. Sainsbury's for dog and cat food, their 'basics' loo paper etc.

Don't go to Croydon, I say. Now that's dire!

There's a Boots and a Superdrug in Rye Lane (the Superdrug is refitted and fairly well stocked - the Boots is a bit dismal) There are a also lot of places on Rye Lane that specialise in hair and make up products for black skin and afro hair.

There is also a Superdrug in Camberwell.

Clothes shops in Peckham are fairly limited (Primark, Peacocks and a few independent ones) I would look at the Clarks factory shop - they often have some good bargains.

Brixton is good for chain clothes shops - it has H&M, New Look, Top shop, Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse, M+S, TK Maxx as well as a Superdrug and Boots.

Other than that i reckon your best bet is to go in to town (Train to Victoria or get the number 12 to Oxford Circus)

If you fancy a big shopping centre Westfield Stratford it is very quick - get the Overground from either Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill to Canada water and then the Jubilee line to Stratford - the journey will only take about 1/2 an hour.

Thanks very much...very helpful! I will definitely check out the pharmacy on NorthCross for make up...that is a good tip! :) There are hardly any shops near my work either so great to find out what we have nearby.

Really sorry, Buddug, but shopping in Bromley makes me lose the will to live.

I had to go there a year or so back because my sister wanted something from Lakeland as a birthday present. I could feel the life slowly ebbing from me .......

But each to their own, eh! I pretty much hate shopping centres anyway.

ETA: I think there is still a small branch of Boots in Forest Hill. If you order something from Boots on-line, you can collect it there, which is quite useful.

The bus to Lewisham drops you right outside Primark. The mall contains all the usual suspects (Boots, M&S, TKMaxx, H&M....) plus the market sells fruit and veg at amazingly low prices, and there are a couple of really good fabric shops.

Not Local. but you can drive to Bluewater in 40 mins...

Park there all day for free.

All the West End Shops..

Plus plenty of places to have a Meal.

It would not surprise me if hands and brain behind the OP are something to do with the announcement by Boris and Bromley of their intention to sell the hilltop of Crystal Palace Park to billionaire Chinese developer and oilman Mr Ni Zhaoxing. This colossal building will be visible from miles away and is expected to attract thousands of daily visitors. Only problem is the feeder routes to this, of which LL, College and Croxted Roads make up the Northern approach, struggle to cope with existing traffic demand during peak times.

A planning application is expected to be submitted in a few weeks but lots of talk about global attraction, the need for a shopping mall and exhibition centre to replace Earsl Court.

I went to Bromley shopping centre once...and couldnt wait to leave!

Canary Wharf has some high st stores and is easy to get to.

Other than that, the West-end is easy to reach.

Bromley's all right if go weekdays or early on a Saturday. Lewisham's OK for an old-school shopping centre experience.

Kings Road is not too hard to get to.

Generally I find Rye Lane (Peckham) is better for bog standard practical high street shopping than Lordship Lane. Boots/Superdug/Argos/Primark/Mothercare to name a few. Did have a WHS but that's gone now.

Having just read Chick Pea's post, personally I don't really think we need a beast of a shopping mall here, do we? It's not that far to get to Bluewater or Westfield Stratford, if that's what floats your boat.
