tinkerbell
My sister and I popped into Le Chandelier for a coffee and a cake the other morning. I am outraged by the prices in there. We ordered large capuccinos to be told they only do one size (small) - they were ?3 and we had 3 sips in each cup as it was mostly foam - a pound a sip. we ordered a pain au chocolat each and they were also small and underwhelming and 3.50 - yes three pounds fifty for a pain au chocolat!! very glad i have moved to peckham where places like Anderson and Co, Cafe Viva, Le Petit Chou and Cinammon Tree Bakery offer far better value for money. Not to mention Mouse Tails coffee van outside the Peckham Library which does excellent EXCELLENT coffee.feel free to share coffee prices based rants and recommendations for the sake of my amusement. JohnL
Stopped buying Cappuccinos in Starbucks a few years ago when I got a mug of foam - switched to Latte.or try asking for wet - they are supposed to cut the foam then. titch juicy
really? does that not render the whole 'local business' thread redundant?surely it's just the same as an online review- can they really threaten to sue or is this just a big joke? Jeremy
Of course they can threaten anything they like!I would have thought any sort of victory would be unlikely, but I suppose it's not worth admin's time to go to all the hassle. bloonoo
I don't understand how we're not allowed to discuss on the forum, but they have a trip advisor page and a yelp page?just looked at their menu - 5.60 for scrambled eggs on toast - that's ridiculous (though to be fair i expect quite a few places in ED charge that amount). oh my goodness and 6.95 for a bacon sarnie?! i hope it's served on a gold plate.anderson's isn't good value - I paid ?3 for the tiniest brownie in there Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/36562-most-expensive-coffee-spot-currently-le-chandelier/#findComment-680341 Share on other sites
KidKruger
OK.Had a fantastic, massive, perfect quality cappucino at Le Chandelier for only 85p.Gorgeous pain au chocolat was only 35p.Absolute bargain and best ever cafe.Howzat ? Dulwich Squirrel
Is this thread not a bit unfair on Le Chandelier? I'm pretty sure that they don't pretend to be the best value for money coffee shop in the area...If you don't like the price of the 'large cappucino' and 'pain au chocolat'- then simply go somewhere else cheaper and stop moaning!! ????
The point is that the Forum is voluntary run, non-profit and Admin can't be ars*d with legal threats taht in reality would probably not stand up to anything.....but would mean hassle and some expense for Admin, so if local businesses don't want to engage with potential customers and are worried about any criticims just leave them alone and make your own judgemnt about why they want to censor criticism...Please stop posting on this though Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/36562-most-expensive-coffee-spot-currently-le-chandelier/#findComment-680357 Share on other sites
EDLove
Perhaps Peckham offers better value for money for your coffee because it's a less desirable place to visit/live? I know I'd rather pay more to have my coffee here. DaveR
I could understand Le Chandelier's reaction when an ex-member of staff made all sorts of allegations about them. But it seems to me that if a policy is adopted that legal threats, however groundless, will lead to an embargo on a particular business even being named, there is a danger that one function of the forum becomes essentially redundant. Zebedee Tring
I have never personally been to Le Chandelier. However, having now read their email, I certainly won't give them my patronage. Any establishment that is so thin-skinned that it can only deal with comments from customers online by making a veiled threat of libel action in order to put the wind up the Forum isn't worth visiting. The old adage "If you can't stand the heat ..." is such an appropriate one in this case. Tr?
Sorry, you can't be 'outraged' if you knew the price and had your coffee regardless. You can only be gobsmacked, and then either walk out or have you coffee regardless and be disappointed with yourself. Too Good To Be True
EDF should start a new section where the legal letters are scanned and posted online. That would probably put a stop to them. Zebedee Tring
About 40 years ago Private Eye received a letter from some solicitors along the following lines:"We act for Mr Arkle who has read the article about him in your last edition. We have advised him that your article is grossly libellous. Before we take the matter any further, is there anything that you would like to say to our client?"Private Eye replied as follows:"We wish to say the following to your client, namely (two word epithet roughly translated as "Go forth and multiply").Private Eye still refer litigious people to their comments in the case of Arkle v Pressdam. Perhaps the Forum could refer said litigious establishment to Arkle v Pressdam should they receive any more silly emails or letters from them.
