Moos
Inspired by Benjaminty's roaring success, I'd like to ask a similar qu about good drinkeries - I guess not necessarily pubs, actually - somewhere near Victoria station. I'm meeting a friend there for a post-work drink, and have never previously gone there except immediately to go somewhere else so have only a vague impression of crap hotels. Surely there must be something decent nearby; can anyone enlighten me as to the hidden gems? mockney piers
Not really any hidden gems that way I'm afraid, well a couple in some mews, but gems in the sense of they're still real pubs, and characterful in that 5 ft square way. Here's a something that might suit if you don't mind throwing your stone really hardhttp://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub2307.html Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3665-victoria-good-pubs-nearish-the-station/#findComment-114306 Share on other sites
david_carnell
Working five minutes from the station, I'm afraid Mockers is right, it's a bit of a desert fro good drinking dens. There's a new place on Vauxhall Bridge Rd called the Brass Monkey that, as the review says is a bit soulless and bland but decent enough. There's a fancy bar on near St James as part of a hotel but the name escapes me.Otherwise The Constitution is my favourite. Good luck. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3665-victoria-good-pubs-nearish-the-station/#findComment-114318 Share on other sites

KoolBananas
Pubs in VictoriaSadly not many particularly exciting places. For the majority IME service is a bit poor/slow and these places tend to be heaving at rush hour (for obvious reasons)Ha Ha's is quite a popular place amongst my girlies... Keef
I went to a birthday party at The Clarendon, which is strictly Pimlico, but only a few minutes walk from the station. Not a "boozer", but I thought it was rather nice. James
I once went to a dreadful gay pub called the STAG near Victoria station. I saw a drag act which was basically Anne Robinson in a Nazi Uniform, 7-inch heels and a black miniskirt screaming "YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK!" at everyone. Then she sang "These boots were made for walking" and left abruptly. Bizarre Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3665-victoria-good-pubs-nearish-the-station/#findComment-114479 Share on other sites
KoolBananas
Hey the Stag can be a really good place to go! Admittedly the drag acts can be a bit erm... well not very good but they can also be fabulous - very flexible.People in there can be very friendly towards all. I remember a time when I was out with another forumite (who shall remain namelss), it was her first time there, a very overyly gay regular approached demanded to know "what are you?" after establishing she was a "happy straight" hugged and kissed her and said loudly "oh thank goodness there's a bit of strangeness in here at long last! I was beginning to get bored". Said forumite then was introduced to many other regulars who then looked after us all evening in a protective manner not pervy ;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3665-victoria-good-pubs-nearish-the-station/#findComment-114498 Share on other sites

Marmora Man
The bar at the Grosvenor Hotel is stylish - cocktails, champagne, wine & beer. Dark leather seats, subdued lighting, feels more sophisticated than a normal railway hotel. RosieH
The bar at the Cinnamon Club (great cocktails, politicians)Bank (longest bar in europe or some such when it was opened) - a bit full of wankers these days, but had a nice gruner veltliner in there tonightThe Ebury down near the coach station Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3665-victoria-good-pubs-nearish-the-station/#findComment-114635 Share on other sites
Peckhamgatecrasher
I do miss the champagne and oyster bar at Victoria. Anyone else remember it. Happy days. RosieH
Yes yes - it was great. Our offices have recently moved to Victoria and now there is a dearth (although I still seem to have managed to find a few last night)Is there anywhere good to eat round there? Peckhamgatecrasher
Used to be a superb Italian: might have been Ebury St, might have been called Momo's ?!? David Mc
This is a nice restaurant:http://www.aboutthyme.co.uk/My choir rehearses in Victoria and if we go out for one afterwards we usually end up at The Stage Door (down the street to the left of the Victoria Palace Theatre) or The Jugged Hare - 172 Vauxhall Bridge Rd. dogkennel
I work in Victoria - my favourite pub by a long way is the Jugged Hare, about 5 mins walk away down Vauxhall Bridge Road, a Fullers Ale & Pie House in a converted bank. It's far enough from the station so as not to be too busy. The Cardinal, a Sam Smiths pub, is slightly different too, a bit darker, but cheaper beer! KalamityKel
Strange happenings go on in the Cardinal... blasphemy and the likes are frowned upon by the portraits and punish you by means of knocking over ones beer... that's wot I've been told anyway Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/3665-victoria-good-pubs-nearish-the-station/#findComment-115163 Share on other sites
shygirl
There is a decent pub on Palace St. called the Phoenix about 5 mins walk from Victoria Station. Brendan
The Phoenix in Victoria is pretty good but expect to pay at least one maybe two thousand pounds per pint.
