Inspired by Benjaminty's roaring success, I'd like to ask a similar qu about good drinkeries - I guess not necessarily pubs, actually - somewhere near Victoria station.

I'm meeting a friend there for a post-work drink, and have never previously gone there except immediately to go somewhere else so have only a vague impression of crap hotels. Surely there must be something decent nearby; can anyone enlighten me as to the hidden gems?

Not really any hidden gems that way I'm afraid, well a couple in some mews, but gems in the sense of they're still real pubs, and characterful in that 5 ft square way.

Here's a something that might suit if you don't mind throwing your stone really hard

Working five minutes from the station, I'm afraid Mockers is right, it's a bit of a desert fro good drinking dens.

There's a new place on Vauxhall Bridge Rd called the Brass Monkey that, as the review says is a bit soulless and bland but decent enough.

There's a fancy bar on near St James as part of a hotel but the name escapes me.

Otherwise The Constitution is my favourite. Good luck.

I once went to a dreadful gay pub called the STAG near Victoria station. I saw a drag act which was basically Anne Robinson in a Nazi Uniform, 7-inch heels and a black miniskirt screaming "YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK!" at everyone. Then she sang "These boots were made for walking" and left abruptly. Bizarre

Hey the Stag can be a really good place to go! Admittedly the drag acts can be a bit erm... well not very good but they can also be fabulous - very flexible.

People in there can be very friendly towards all. I remember a time when I was out with another forumite (who shall remain namelss), it was her first time there, a very overyly gay regular approached demanded to know "what are you?" after establishing she was a "happy straight" hugged and kissed her and said loudly "oh thank goodness there's a bit of strangeness in here at long last! I was beginning to get bored". Said forumite then was introduced to many other regulars who then looked after us all evening in a protective manner not pervy ;-)

This is a nice restaurant:

My choir rehearses in Victoria and if we go out for one afterwards we usually end up at The Stage Door (down the street to the left of the Victoria Palace Theatre) or The Jugged Hare - 172 Vauxhall Bridge Rd.

I work in Victoria - my favourite pub by a long way is the Jugged Hare, about 5 mins walk away down Vauxhall Bridge Road, a Fullers Ale & Pie House in a converted bank. It's far enough from the station so as not to be too busy. The Cardinal, a Sam Smiths pub, is slightly different too, a bit darker, but cheaper beer!

    • No I won't. This has nothing to do with Ryedale and everything to do with the way people approach news.
    • I'm getting dozens of fliers a year from all the estate agents.  I'm not selling, thinking of selling or renting out. The one from John D Woods really got my goat as it is plastic coated so can't even be recycled.  I've emailed them.  They must be making so much money to to these mass mail outs.  I couldn't find the old thread about things that put you into an irrational rage (although this rage is not irrational) I have a nice time too watching GB win their first medal at the Winter Olympics - that is an understatement! I'll burn it, sod the tiny impact on air quality.
    • @PenguinYou will have to explain this to me bearing in mind your and others outrage at a possible new scheme on Ryedale, and the use by many on this forum of Southwark News to support their reaction. I don't know what precautionary mindset means.  The precautionary principle is that we need to act now for example in tackling climate change rather than wait twenty years for conclusive evidence (that was the situation in 2006 when Stern published his report) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stern_Review
    • Yes, and their sister (?) company Inigo has some interesting Not Modern properties as well! Interesting as in marvelling at people's very varied  tastes 🤣
